How much would you spend on a nice bag?

Lately I have been thinking about purchasing a very expensive designer bag. It is around £1000, so it would be a huge investment. I really like it, but I don't know if a bag, albeit very nice, is ever worth spending so much money. I've never purchased such an expensive bag, the bags I already own are in the £200/300 territory.

What is the maximum you would be willing to spend on a bag? Do you think it ever makes sense to spend a lot on it?

Probably up to £150 although I have spent slightly more than that in the past
I used to have many more bags but just can't be bothered to swap contents so these days only have 3-4 which I rotate
What would I spend on jewellery? That's a very dangerous question........

Blueturquoise · 16/01/2016 22:47

Up to 500, generally in the sales :)
I love bags, but haven't really fallen for any over 500, maybe someday a Chanel would be nice though ......

FuckyNell · 16/01/2016 22:47

I do more tomorrow. you don't need to tell me it's a waste of money, I have my mother for that 😃

KateSpadeAddict · 16/01/2016 22:48

I am very much a bag person and have spent up to around 1000, but would spend more if I could! I have my eye on an Anya maxi zip at the moment. Most of my bags I keep an eye out for in sales though so rarely pay full price, except for my Mulberry bags. I mainly use Kate Spade bags though and they are a fair bit cheaper than an average Mulberry. I bought my 6th one the other day much to dip’s dismay Blush .

It makes me really really happy to be carrying a beautiful bag - no matter how sad that makes me sound! Grin

justasecond · 16/01/2016 22:48

I love bags, more than clothes, shoes and jewelry. The most expensive ones, chloe marcie and prada were bought for around £650 in the sales. I also have some lower priced ones between 250-300 like anya hindmarch, chloe tote and mbmj and kate spade. Personally I would struggle to justify anything above about £800 but each to their own.

Doobigetta · 16/01/2016 22:54

The most I have spent so far was I think about £150 on a reduced Radley Grosvenor and I agonised over it a bit and felt bad about starving babies and stuff. I totally agree that if you can afford it, it's no-one else's business what you spend. But when it comes to my personal spending I'm quite strict with myself, because I suspect know that there's a lunatic spender waiting to get out. And it has to stop at some point, doesn't it. I also agree with others that once you go over a few hundred, you are paying for the name and the cachet rather than increased quality. Which is fine, if that matters to you. I guess what it actually comes down to is, if you bought it, would using it make you happy or uncomfortable? Would you use it every day, or save it for best? If the latter, then don't.

burnishedsilver · 16/01/2016 22:58

Max £150 and only in a sale.
I don't really want a bag to last forever. I get tired of it and move on.

Smittenkitten2015 · 16/01/2016 23:03

I once splashed out £700 on a gorgeous cream Mulberry Alexa in the Net-A-Porter sale. I still love it and have pretty much used it every day for 4 years BUT it's totally wrecked and looks like shit now. I keep trying to buy cheaper bags but none of them match up to my battered Alexa. I wish I could afford to get another one, I feel like I've stitched myself up.

marghini · 16/01/2016 23:05

Thank you so much for all your replies! I really enjoy this conversation.

I yet have to make up my mind about the expensive bag though. It is so pretty but soooo expensive!

Decisions, decisions...

I would spend a lot if it was a classic great quality bag. I have 2 $1000+ bags (LV neverfull GM and Chanel small flap) and I love them both but tend to stick to Coach and Rebecca minkoff, that way I can buy more of them!

Cellardoor1 · 16/01/2016 23:13

What bag is it marghini?

Doobigetta · 16/01/2016 23:24

Also, I'd never spend a lot on a pale coloured bag- they always get stained, no matter how careful you are.

andadietcoke · 16/01/2016 23:30

katespadeaddict when I was trying to make my mind up about aforementioned bag they had the maxi zips in Bicester Village at the AH outlet there. Were about £800 I think.

marghini · 17/01/2016 00:09

marghini, I saw a lady with that bag a few weeks ago - absolutely gorgeous.

Cellardoor1 · 17/01/2016 00:44

It's very nice, I like the red on the inside! Just a heads up - if you have a look on the Prada section of the purse forum, there is quite a long thread with people complaining about the quality of the double zip tote.

I wouldn't want to spend that much unless it was going to be absolutely perfect and it seems Prada have a lot of issues.

itsthecircleoflife · 17/01/2016 00:54

OP- you could be dead in a week. Theres no point being the richest corpse in the cemetary.

Assuming you wont have to perform a bank raid in order to afford- buy it.

itsthecircleoflife · 17/01/2016 00:55

Its not a waste of money if thats what you want to buy, Fucky. Its releative. I assume your mum has things she spends her spare money on.

stormgoes · 17/01/2016 01:18

The most I've spent is £200. I think I'd go higher, but I've never seen any that I like and costs more than that. Functionality and practicality are really important to me and a lot of the more expensive ones have features that I just don't like.

Openup41 · 17/01/2016 01:33

With my current "spending money"- £50
When this increases - perhaps £150

I would have to be loaded to spend £1k plus on a bag as in, sought after house on sought after road, dc in private school, long haul holidays twice a year loaded.

Cheesymonster · 17/01/2016 08:27

I have a Bayswater and an Alexa which cost £595 and £600 respectively. I wouldn't go over £800 I don't think although prices are rising all the time aren't they. I love the Balenciaga City and all Givenchy bags but they're way over £1k, I'll never be able to afford them.

Love your Speedy Fucky

Catpants123 · 17/01/2016 08:37

I thought I would treat myself to a decent bag for the first time ever and just ordered a coach one for £270. I am sending it back. I just don't appreciate it. For that price I need to love it.

I think you should spend your money how you wish. Look at how much some people spend on a car or a holiday. I haven't been on holiday for years so a few hundred on a bag is nothing on comparison. Whatever gives you pleasure.

Cheesymonster · 17/01/2016 08:41

My ex MIL used to think I was mad buying bags but she spent her money on her ugly ass teapot collection and dinner services. It's each to their own IMO.

OP, I agree with the pp above, check out the Purse Forum.

Barbie1 · 17/01/2016 08:45

I love bags. I love bags more than shoes, therefore I would spend more Wink

I have a very lovely collection of bags, they are insured for £££££.

The most expensive is my Chanel 2.55. Reissue.

My daughter is going to love me when she inherits all of my bags Grin

Work it out on a cost per wear if you can't quite bring yourself to part with your hard earnt cash

Higge · 17/01/2016 08:51

I don't know - I've never liked a bag enough to pay £1000. I mostly wear casual....So I'd happily buy something casual - maybe a Campomaggi for around £500. I'd go higher for a more formal bag, if I was taking it to work everyday but I really, really don't like labels on the outside of any bag and unfortunately that makes bag shopping rather difficult.
