How much would you spend on a nice bag?

Lately I have been thinking about purchasing a very expensive designer bag. It is around £1000, so it would be a huge investment. I really like it, but I don't know if a bag, albeit very nice, is ever worth spending so much money. I've never purchased such an expensive bag, the bags I already own are in the £200/300 territory.

What is the maximum you would be willing to spend on a bag? Do you think it ever makes sense to spend a lot on it?

Well I doubt my DD would be that thrilled to get a bag from h&m in 30 years time Wink

Mominatrix · 17/01/2016 15:41

But Polly, when you say passed on, it also has to imply a bag which the next generation would want to have. I cheap leather bag in a dated style is not one which can be passed on. In order to pass on a bag for a generation (and you are incorrect, I have 2 chanel flaps and a kelly from my mum), they design on the bag must be timeless.

I agree that bags are definitely not investments - they are useful objects. Some are just more useful than others.

wickedwaterwitch · 17/01/2016 15:51

Ooh I like that prada tote, buy it!

Sparklycat · 17/01/2016 15:53

If spending £1000 on a bag is the equivalent of 'normal earners' spending £50 on a bag then go for it. If you've not really got that disposable income to further away then don't do it.

Larastheme · 17/01/2016 15:56

That's why I carry some plastic bags in my bag mom, Wink,

Polly
I did buy a vintage box Kelly from an auction house lately, the stamp year is I in a circle , 79 , it had some discolouration on one corner, and needed to be professionally cleaned and buffed, the restorer said that the patch of box leather used in this bag is of the highest quality, something you can't easily come by these days, and it could last for another 35 years with no issues,

not all leathers are equal, some leathers crack and blister, peel ,they have been chemically treated and coloured using harsh chemicals which weakens, plus high street retailers even some high end designers are very frugal with leather .they would want to stretch it out to make the most number of bags they can produce, or use thin leathers that have been rejected by others,

£1200-ish on a Lanvin Sugar. Also have a mini sugar and a Gucci disco, both were around £600 - £650. Also have a Saint Laurent clutch, think that was about £700.. Planning on buying the Gucci disco in Ivory for the summer.. Cost per wear I reckon they work out cheaper that my cheaper bags (of which I have plenty but all leather).. I take care of them but don't save them for best, I have them to enjoy them..

Longislandicetee · 17/01/2016 16:05

Polly, my house isn't affordable for 99.9% people, are my values skewed because of the house I live in. We don't live in our house to be showy, we live there because we like it and could afford it. Same logic applies to bags.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 17/01/2016 16:08

There's no guarantee that the DDs will want the designer bag collection in future though is there? I cannot imagine for the life of me wanting a collection of my mums old handbags now matter how desirable they were in the first place.

HappyGirlNow · 17/01/2016 16:12

If my mum had a cupboard full of Chanels, yes!

If it was bog standard store brands, no!

areyoubeingserviced · 17/01/2016 16:12

£400 max

AmberNectarine · 17/01/2016 16:21

My 4yo DD has her very own baby Anya H bought specifically for her. I'm sure that is the height of profligacy but she loves it - gotta train 'em young.

As far as I'm concerned: my money = my business, your money = none of my business.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 17/01/2016 16:22

Well, no, a cupboard full of Chanels would be of no use or interest to me whatsoever except in the unlikely event one or two of them were the exact right colour, size shape, no gold coloured fittings, no logos, all the other criteria I have for a bag. I'd donate them to charity or something.

HappyGirlNow · 17/01/2016 16:26

Was speaking for myself not you whoknows Grin and agree I'd still need to LIKE them obvs!

PollyPerky · 17/01/2016 16:30

I don't think comparing a house with a bag is a good analogy Blingy.
Unless you live alone, a house is providing accommodation for you and your family. Other people are benefiting from it. It's not a fashion accessory as is a bag. And in almost every case, bar a crash, it will increase in value.

I think you are missing the point about 'values'. I didn't say people should only buy what most people could afford. I said bags costing thousands are coveted partly because they cost thousands. It's totally different.

Higge · 17/01/2016 16:32

My dd has already pinched a bag of mine - a nice soft leather tan hobo, she loves it...£80 from JLP, it's a simple design, suits her and doesn't look tacky or too grown up.
She has her eyes on a lot of my clothes too!

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 17/01/2016 16:40

What I mean though Happy is that those saying they are an amazing thing to hand down to your daughters, they might, but it's also quite likely that the daughters will have no interest in them whatsoever.

AmberNectarine · 17/01/2016 16:44

Or, Happy's DDs might (in the unlikely event they weren't thrilled to have a cupboard full of Chanel's left to them), think 'a-ha, these bags are worth several thousands pounds so I can sell then and buy a bag/jewellery/bench that is more to my taste with the proceeds, yippee!'

cheapandcheerful · 17/01/2016 16:44

I don't think I would ever spend more than £30 on a bag...

AmberNectarine · 17/01/2016 16:44

Oh autocorrect.

Chanels. No apostrophe.

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/01/2016 16:50

Amber - DD has an anya ballet bag. It was on sale though Smile

HappyGirlNow · 17/01/2016 16:50

Good point amber Grin

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 17/01/2016 16:52

That's certainly what I'd do Grin

Machine123 · 17/01/2016 17:06

Bags in the £1k range don't really hold their value very well. The ones that do are the classic quilted chanel bags but they're in excess of £1k. I redeemed my Amex points on a mulberry bag about 5 years ago, at the time the bag was selling in stores for £1k but today I won't even get £100 for it on eBay Sad

Machine123 · 17/01/2016 17:07

And I only used it for about 2 years after which but started to look out of fashion.

Machine123 · 17/01/2016 17:11

And don't be tempted by the designer bag offers in TKMaxx and other discount stores. They're about 10 years out of season. Learnt the hard way after splashing out on a heavily discounted Jimmy Choo bag from TKMaxx and then never ever using it because the style was too hobo for the time.
