If you use bars of soap instead of gel what do you use?

Just that Smile

Went to a holiday cottage and there was a glass jar with unwrapped bars of soap in there and I brought one home with me, huge bar and smells vaguely familiar. I'm coming to the end of it now and am desperate to find some more.

It's a white bar, no name on it. First thing I thought of was Camay but can't seem to find it anywhere.

So I need to find a replacement if my beloved soap can't be replaced, any suggestions gratefully received Smile

I find occitane very drying. Could it have been Lux - a lovely familiar smell of childhood and not too drying or Palmolive

MooMinCow · 02/08/2015 09:25

Those of you who use soap in the shower, how do you stop it from going all soft and mushy? Have been thinking of going back to it but we have a shower cubicle and I can see me or DH dropping it and slipping on a barConfused

Are some less 'squishy' than others? Is a harder French style soap better for showering?

BeaufortBelle · 02/08/2015 09:31

Soapdish in two parts. Soap rests on part with small holes in. On of our showers has a holder with holes in the bottom (fixed to the wall). Big enough for sponge, shwr gel, probably great for a bar of soap.

Stitchintime1 · 02/08/2015 09:37

I'm going to buy some soap today. This could be my new hobby. What should I start with?

MooMinCow · 02/08/2015 09:46

Thanks Belle. Will go look for one of those suction soap tray things then have a look in TK Maxx for some nice soap!

VagelinaJolie · 02/08/2015 09:49

Beau, also store your stocks in drawers and airing cupboard, they go hard and last longer. When dm died I ended up with loads, probably enough to lastme out! She loved violets and dgc associated tge scent with her-they all have a bar tucked away to sniff.
Also one of those super suction soap dishes-find out where the spray misses and put it there.
My sister brought a lovely one back from Japan, the soap was melted into a sponge, smelt fantastic.
Stitch-tk maxx is great for big bars if Italian and French soap (often reduced)

One tip I got from a Neals Yard assistant is to keep nice-smelling soap to scent your wardrobe or drawers until you use it. Eventually the smell goes but the soap is still as fragrant when you use it. (Neals Yard orange geranium is nice and such good quality it lasts ages)

Stitch like a PP I love Nesti Dante. Its available online. The fig is fabulous (haven't tried any others) and the smell as a freshener gave 2 years of gorgeousness.

We have a suction type of soap rack in the shower. A bit like this.

It prevents the soap from going mushy. I find glycerine soaps are the worst for going mushy, especially the fruity Bodyshop ones.

BeaufortBelle · 02/08/2015 09:52

Soap going into drawers now. Heads to bathroom with other bar :)

Eternalsunshines · 02/08/2015 09:56

Just wondering how do you all store your soap after using it? Soap dishes are a bit gross to me but I would love to use soap bars more.

BeaufortBelle · 02/08/2015 09:57

Actually, it doesn't smell that great. Must do more research.

Bunbaker · 02/08/2015 09:59

Read my post Eternal

Roonerspism · 02/08/2015 10:17

Oh I love this thread! I hate liquid soap like Carex. It's horribly chemically and drying.

Soap for me is an indulgent treat but a bar lasts ages. I really like the smell of the Sainburys cheapo one.

TK Maxx usually has a wonderful selection, including Dr Bronner. I really like the Johnsons Baby soap, too

wplum · 02/08/2015 10:29

There's plenty of information here willowandplumsoapco.co.uk on the ingredients in soap, most on the market are just detergents that strip your skin. Dove is one that contains some dodgy stuff. NOT wanting business I'm just pretty obsessed by skin care, and I make soap too.

I've found my people. I love soap, my friends think I'm weird but in the same breath will compliment my skin so it's obviously working. I love Brittos soap from Portugal. Amazing scents and creamy lather. I also like the Dudu Osun black soap, infuse that daily even on my face and fanjo. The phillipino kojic acid soaps are good for exfoliation too. When I visit a different country the first thing I do is buy soap. Addicted!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/08/2015 10:57

Puss-I like soap for my body, but E 45 for my face.

The one I have doesn't go mushy at all, so I just leave it on the shower soap tray thingy.

Heading off to waitrose in a bit to see if their soap is my 'precious'Wink

I've always used soap, never shower gel, which seems so uneconomical. When I was a child, we had one of these stuck to the tiles next to the bath. I'm pleased to see you can still buy them!

If you use bars of soap instead of gel what do you use?
findingmyfeet12 · 02/08/2015 11:10

I love soap too. I do remember Zest soap (someone mentioned it above) we always had that at home as children and also imperial leather and Palmolive.

Now it's Marseille for me but I'm definitely going to buy some lush soap to scent the bathroom with - does the fragrance last well?

Roonerspism · 02/08/2015 11:13

Suburban - that pic has made my day!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/08/2015 12:44

Right, I'm back from waitrose -

The sensitive one looks like a smaller version of my one, so while not the same, looks fine so I'll use it,

I also got a pack of four lemon and amber soaps which look nice.

Also a rose hand wash for the kitchen which is utterly beautiful and smells like it should be £15 a bottle instead of a quid Shock

So I'm still on the hunt for my one ...

I have just bought some of the black African stuff and shall report back!

Often find lovely wee homemade bars at Farmers Markets. Also see Dr Bronner a lot in TK Maxx

PinkPopPony · 02/08/2015 13:14

I got some of the African soap as well Blush

I love those waitrose soaps - sometimes they are a third off but are still great value at normal price.

I may have a ton of soap and DH rolls his eyes if I buy more Hmm

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/08/2015 13:21

I'm going to designate a drawer for soap- that's my afternoon projectGrin

rooner let us know how you get on!

I find as I've got older my skin has got so sensitive and dry, but my sweatiness has increased. Hormones Angry
It was a struggle to find anything to suit me and eczema prone dcs -but we have and we ain't changing Smile
Just can't believe how mild it is, absolutely use it for intimate areas and face - no stinging at all. Just clean, fresh and smooth skin.

I was a sweaty rag in the heat this summer, and would shower twice daily. Not a problem. Kept stroking my skin and marveling. Keep waiting for a breakout or rash, but so far so good!
