Honest opinions please - my wedding dress

Have NC

I'm having doubts about my dress, mainly because I've been to 3 weddings recently where the bride has spent hundreds on their dress and I've spent less than £120 and only now have I realised you can probably tell.

The dress fits lovely and I'm getting nice shoes but I can't help shake the feeling people will think it looks cheap because it is cheap

If it helps I'm 5'10 and a slim size 12

Here is the link

Feeling stressed this evening worrying about it - wish wed disappeared somewhere and got married on our own so I didn't have 100 odd people looking at me

It looks lovely! And a perfect style for a slim size 12 that is tall like yourself. Don't worry about the "cheap" bit. Most wedding dresses are polyester. Have a look at some more expensive gowns to reassure yourself. There really won't be much difference. You are getting into figures like £5K and up to have real silk.

I sew to a fairly high standard for myself. I have a pretty good handle on how things are constructed and what they should cost. The whole wedding industry is pretty puffed up. I'd splash a little cash on the right under-garments.

Make sure you have some sort of half slip, if it isn't already lined and a basque. Then the dress will skim beautifully over the top. (Don't be tempted to go for a normal, skimpy strapless bra even if you have a fairly modest bust. With a basque, you won't have to worry about any lumps or bumps that would show under a simple dress like that even on a slim person. Also you won't risk it sliding around on you. You don't want to be tugging and adjusting through your dress on your wedding day.)

That dress is beautiful. You'll look amazing. Totally sympathize with wanting to run away and do it on the beach, I'm getting married in two weeks and am in exactly the same place!

Number666livesaMrMIller · 28/06/2015 09:18

Wow! What a stunning dress. Your figure will suit it perfectly and added to the sunflowers and those gorgeous shoes (link one) you will look amazing!
All the best for your big day.

justaweeone · 28/06/2015 09:44

It's beautiful and looks expensive.

WhereAreMyDragons · 28/06/2015 14:02

It's a beautiful dress! I think it's bonkers to spend thousands on a dress, in fact I found my 'dream dress' but at £1500 I just couldn't justify it, especially as ds was here already. I still think about it though Grin

I ended up buying one in a sample sale for £300 and it was lovely.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2015 14:05

BEAUTIFUL dress OP, so elegant. You're having last minute dress nerves- no need, it really is gorgeous. Thanks

Felix75 · 28/06/2015 14:21

I think people will presume it cost loads more, particularly if you got it altered slightly to fit you. It's absolutely gorgeous. I agree that the strapless, beaded dresses look cheap and are ubiquitous. Also what surprises me is the number of people who've obviously got their strapless dress from a bridal shop and yet it still doesn't fit round their chest! Personal peeve there...

midnightmoomoo · 28/06/2015 15:49

It's gorgeous! As long as it fits well and is comfortable you can relax and enjoy the day. Congratulations!

DepthFirstSearch · 28/06/2015 15:53

Aw, it's lovely! You will look beautiful.

My own wobbly was about not losing even half a pound before my wedding, which meant I was bursting out of my dress, but I look so happy in the pictures that I honestly don't care Smile

Rathalie · 28/06/2015 15:57

That is a gorgeous dress, really classy and elegant. I think the thing that makes some dresses look "cheap" (even if they're not) are the frilly sparkly pouffy bits and because that dress doesn't have those, it looks like it could have cost a lot of money!

Eminado · 28/06/2015 15:58

Gorgeous dress!

hippospot · 28/06/2015 16:00

Doesn't look cheap at all!
You are tall and slim, it will look gorgeous!
I honestly think spending more than that is crazy.

Frolicacid · 28/06/2015 16:37

It's a lovely dress!
I got married in a bhs dress and had exactly the same wobble a few weeks before. Everything was fine. The dress fitted perfectly and looked fab. I felt really comfortable in it from 11:30am to 4am. I'm really glad I didn't spend £1000's on something I would have been scared to have fun in. People seemed genuinely surprised when they found out it wasn't an expensive designer number.
Congratulations and enjoy your day Flowers

Twodogsandahooch · 28/06/2015 16:39

Beautiful. I might buy one in just case I finally make it up the aisle with my DP . . .

ImBrian · 28/06/2015 17:05

I got my wedding dress from bhs for about the same amount and I remember having a massive wobble a week or two before the wedding because it wasn't a big, expensive dress. At the end of the day it suited me much more then a big over the top dress ever would and I saved a fortune.

The dress is beautiful and I'm sure you will look amazing in it.

louwn · 28/06/2015 17:11

Gosh, beautiful dress for 120 quid! Looks like mine a little which cost over ten times as much. It looks a lot nicer than a boring strapless number, most of which probably cost a lot more than your dress and look a lot cheaper!

QueenOfThorns · 28/06/2015 17:20

I like your style OP! I got married in a £250 dress and Jimmy Choos Grin

I had a major wobble because I chose a floor-length bridesmaids dress in a dark colour, rather than the traditional white/ivory/whatever, but I don't regret it now. I had white flowers that looked amazing against the dress.

CPtart · 28/06/2015 19:18

It's a lovely dress. Be confident wearing it, that's the key. A full length veil would look stunning with it.

Jo4040 · 28/06/2015 19:40

What you worrying for? Your day, your dress, your bloody money, its lovely!!!

Hadron21 · 28/06/2015 19:43

Good choice. It's beautiful.

Imagine it not on the bhs website- it would cost so much more. Love it.

dontcallmelen · 28/06/2015 20:40

OP lovely lovely dress, very elegant & so nice that, it's not a strapless/sparkly number yy to Jimmy Choos & second the pp re: good fitting underwear & maybe a pretty clip for your hair, also really love the colours for your bm dresses, lovely soft/subtle coloursFlowers

Very nice.

My dress cost €60 or £46 in our money....brand new.

I love it. After trolling around loads of shops and finding nothing suitable I went on holiday to Tenerife....and there it was.

I'll have to take it back with me for my beach wedding in September.

I barely got past the door in an expensive bridal shop ( yes, I'm talking of that one in York) and was asked my budget. Lying through my teeth i said £300. I was told there was nothing in that price range. The reality was£150-200.

Couldn't believe it. Wasn't even allowed a look. It was like the scene from pretty woman all over again.

I've never seen another one like mine either!

Lovemylittlebear · 28/06/2015 21:02

Beautiful if I had your figure would have gone for something like that instead of a corsety dress xx

acatcalledjohn · 28/06/2015 21:09

That dress is just lovely, and will suit you at your height. I'm 5'10" too, and once (if) I get down to a slim 12 from my current 14, I would pick something like that too. Simple, classy & elegant.

Wedding dresses are overpriced and not necessarily a good fit. Price tag is not important. How it looks and feels on, however, is.

Wear it with pride!
