I want to spend with you but your offerings are so sore. You can still do your trendy flash in the pan shit, but you would make lots of money if you did:
Cotton round neck cardies in all the colours.
Cotton thick leggings in all the colours
Cotton jersey dresses in different styles in all the colours
Comfortable leather ballet pumps in all the colours
Matching vest and knicker sets in funky patterns
Big boob support nighties and pyjama vest tops.
Go back to having good quality opaque, cotton mix and wool mix tights, I have tights from you that are 5 years old, but this years only lasted 3 washes
I'm your core market, I have money and could be shopping with you for fifty more years.

I think quite often m&s get stick for things that are ok. Its not ground breaking fashion and I don't want it to be. There are plenty of stores that I can go to if I want 'on trend'. What I want from m&s is good quality basics for women. Cotton pants in plain colours, cotton bras in larger cup sizes.
cotton cardigans and t-shirts and basic jersey dresses in plain colours.

For the older girls range to increase and a bigger selection. again good quality basics for them, plain pants in cotton in bottom covering styles.

School uniform to be available in store all year round and not just what's left over after the school holidays.

MadisonMontgomery · 15/05/2015 12:39

I would love good quality basics in natural fibres - cashmere, wool, cotton, silk, not nasty 'cashmilon' or whatever it's called. Don't mind spending a bit for decent stuff that lasts, I don't expect them to have Primark prices. I feel like they're always trying to compete with every single high street shop at the same time & failing miserably. Work out who your target audience are and what they want, it's surely not that bloody hard.

Justusemyname · 15/05/2015 12:57

We've been saying this for years. They don't listen. I can't remember the last time I bought anything from m and s clothes other than one jumper this year.

Lilymaid · 15/05/2015 12:58

Madison You have written exactly what I would like from M&S.
Being ancient I can remember the time when you went into M&S for classic items in natural fibres (can we please have plenty of merino wool pullovers in winter and lots of cotton in summer?) and then went elsewhere for the fashion items. I've been unable to find much to buy there for the best part of 20 years.
And please do not embellish promising items with revolting bits of nylon lace and other trimmings/decals etc.
PS I don't expect M&S to have much idea of colour ... it never has, but black/white/cream/navy should be within its capabilities.

Oly4 · 15/05/2015 14:08

Long in the body knitwear - hits at low hip
Proper fabrics - wool, cotton
Jersey dresses for summer in plain colours
Bring back your best quality cotton knickers

feesh · 15/05/2015 14:12

I would like them to give up on clothes completely and just focus on food!

Merse · 15/05/2015 14:20

M&S - are you listening??!!! This would count as valuable customer feedback for you and the sort of thing you'd probably pay good money for

I read the focus thing. Didn't strike me as useful tbh.

DidgeDoolittle · 15/05/2015 14:34

I agree with all the comments about the quality of the fabrics and simple, flattering styles.

I would buy bras from there if they got rid of all that pneumatic stuff they stick in them all. I really don't want a pink and purple, pneumatic frilly bra.

My biggest gripe is the colours they choose for everything. What's with all the bloody pastels? If I buy a cashmere cardigan I want it in navy, black, grey, cream or camel, not bloody lilac or pale pink.

I go into my local, massive, m and s most days to get bits in the food hall. I can't remember when anything in the women's department last caught my eye sufficiently for a second glance, never mind to buy it.

As people have repeatedly said, it's not hard.

Tobiasfunke · 15/05/2015 14:38

I went round the clothes sections this morning after a quick food shop as I desperately needed a new top for tonight. There was only 1 item of clothing I would've considered and it wouldn't have suited me. It was truly dreadful. I am a 46 year old- the sort of person they should be appealing to. I don't quite know why I even thought it was a good idea- I haven't bought anything there for about 10 years. My 75 year old mother bought a cardi so maybe that's their demographic now.

dontcallmelen · 15/05/2015 14:42

Yy cotton strappy nightwear, plain simple bra & knickers, a simplified layout, cotton cardigans/t shirts that fit, no more mad ruffles & crazy pattern stuff & really confusing ranges, also swimwear this year, really thin & ill fitting.

Marcipex · 15/05/2015 14:45

I bought a pair of jeans yesterday.
I wanted black but could only get blue in my size, millions of jeggings though.
There was nothing else there I wanted. T shirts looked okay on the hangers but are all too short for comfort. I want an overlap, not the edges just meeting if I stand still.

ludmiliana · 15/05/2015 14:47

I think M&S's dilemma is that most British women want it for good quality staples that don't scream M&S - plain tops, perfect skirts, plain undies, black trousers, etc. Anonymous, reliable, 'don't mind paying 20% more than at Uniqlo' stuff. Whereas they're focused on headline 'pieces' like that impractical, unflattering Alexa Chung suede skirt which will give them fashion publicity (presumably on the basis that you go in for the suede skirt and then leave with armfuls of anonymous basics), and fill the rest of the shop with scoop necks in that peculiar lime-lemon colour that only exists in M&S.

Bottom line: we want quality basics that'll last 4 seasons. They want to sell us cheaper, one-season wear throwaway fashion, plus a £499 white coat 'as featured in Vogue'. And whatever Percy Pig's mutated into this week.

ludmiliana · 15/05/2015 14:49

Although, having said that, the AW15 preview that was in the papers last week did look about 200% more wearable than previous years, with a couple of really nice coats, and there was no sign of the usual floor-length gold sequin Shirley Bassey evening number. They do do 70s style well, whenever it rolls around...

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 15/05/2015 14:54

I also want no unnecessary sparkles and studs.

Me too. I've lost count of the number of times I've been drawn to something that looks like it might have potential on the hanger only to pull it out and find that the bodice or neckline is covered in hideous, gaudy, plastic stick-on beads and jewels and other extraneous tat that totally cheapens the garment and makes it a complete no-go zone for me.

Bombinate · 15/05/2015 14:56

All the colours would be for me always black, navy, light grey, dark grey, cream, white, red, then 5 colours that would go with the fashionable colours that season. Uniqlo, primark and h & m do it, it's not hard. Taking up the quality a notch is what M & s should be doing. I would gladly pay.

In terms of market research, you'd think that someone at M&S would've approached MN before - talk about key market, ready to spend!

I'd like them to stop Per Una and focus on great quality basics like:

Long and short sleeved tshirts in all colours
Long in the body cami/vests for layering
34" leg in trousers - consistent and across the range
Boyfriend style blazers in cream/white, navy, and black
Silky t-shirts in gorgeous rich colours as well as neutrals
Flattering dresses for taller women - ones which reach further than mid-thigh. Cross/wrap fronts - think Diane F.
Tunic style tops and t shirts in plain jewel colours.
No dresses which make grown women look like a child and/or Pippy Longstocking
Give over on the florals/granny/frothy prints and designs
Good quality cashmere/merino jumpers and knitted dresses
Stylish, comfortable wedge heels at about 2.5"
Less polyester/synthetic material
And for my mum - well cut, structured dresses with sleeves, knee length and figure flattering for the over 65s!

iHAVEtogetoutofhere · 15/05/2015 15:02

You have alienated your core customers by providing 'directional fashion' that isn't appealing to fashion customers (tacky, over embellished, neon crap).

Two or three 'collections' - each consisting of:
A co-ordinating range of good quality clothes.
Well cut, lined, good quality natural fabrics which last.
A good range of sizes and lengths.

A 'work' collection.
A 'weekend' collection.
An 'event/party' collection.

That is enough.

Top class underwear - we WILL pay through the nose if the quality is good.

You would have endless loyal repeat custom.

I don't buy childrens clothes from M&S as they are horrible.
I do buy their food when I have chance.

Buxhoeveden · 15/05/2015 16:28

All the colours would be for me always black, navy, light grey, dark grey, cream, white, red, then 5 colours that would go with the fashionable colours that season.

That would be lovely.

So would the demise of studs, flowers and doo-dahs everywhere.

goodasitgets · 15/05/2015 16:48

What is it with short tops at the moment?! I want a low hip length Breton top but at 5ft 10 it seems impossible
So yes m&s, long tops!

goodasitgets · 15/05/2015 16:49

The weird thing is they do the odd amazing thing. I got short low front suede zip boots reduced to £9.50 Shock isabel marant copy
And the 5 pocket jeggings are fab

RingtheBells · 15/05/2015 17:11

I would like to see the return of your tall section which you had about 5 - 10 years ago.

RingtheBells · 15/05/2015 17:13

Also I like the Per Una jeans and plain trousers but I don't like the crappy belt that they come with

Justusemyname · 15/05/2015 17:22

One ridiculous thing I was told by an assistance is this - Ifnthere is only one pack of socks left they don't put them on the shop floor. They leave them in the stock room. How pointless is that? I might be wanting those, I'm annoyed at having to go back, they lose a sale. Thankfully one intelligent assistant puts all the odd ones on the end. Win win but if you don't know to look and every one else doesn't......
