S&B loathes

Inspired by the Lipstick Queen are crap thread, I've got things I need to get off my chest (so to speak).

Nude lipstick, can't bear it. Hate, hate the 'foundation coloured lips' look.

There are others but that is my most loathed thing at the moment.

Do other people have things that the whole world seems to love but them?

i am hoof shoe woman

bows

GwendolynMoon · 27/04/2015 15:33

Yes, yes to hoof shoes, obvious logos and gold hardware/chains ruining black handbags but the biggest yes to leggings worn as trousers. I am not hugely anti-leggings...they can look nice with tunic tops/shirt dresses etc but worn with a normal top...argh.

I will add straight-across/strapless tops and/or dresses that the wearer has to continually yank up. In my opinion very few people actually suit this style...it really bewilders me that so many people choose this for their wedding dress.

Nabootique · 27/04/2015 15:34

I say it all the time now! So many nude hoof shoes around. Still. When will they go away?

HellKitty · 27/04/2015 15:38

Too high heels. Struggling to find that isn't 10cm.
Ballerina pumps.
Peplums.
That wetsuit material in fashion. Eh?
Boyfriend jeans.
'Mom' jeans.
Cheap leggings.
Stiletto nails.
Bad (too white) French manicures on gels/acrylics.
Orange tans.
Thumb/toe rings, sorry but they give me the heebie-jeebies, no idea why.
Those awful thick brows.
Bad eyeliner application.
Handbags that you can either fit a phone or a lipstick in, not both.
High waisted jeans, camel toe-a-go-go.

avocadotoast · 27/04/2015 15:53

I like sleeveless shirts and red nails Blush my nails are really quite short though so I think I get away with it!

But yy to boots with the toes missing. Or cut out bits at the side.

And also talon nails, velour track suits and those flimsy dresses with elasticated waists (the ones that don't have any real shape other than the elastic).

jjwhite · 27/04/2015 15:53

Defo agree re: strapless tops that require frequent adjusting...

I think the same applies for basically any item of clothing that requires your attention when going out, or that in any way detracts from your ability to just relax and not think about what you're wearing. So... short skirts/dresses that ride up and need to be pulled down, floaty dresses/skirts on a windy day, strapless tops, tops with plunging necklines that mean you have to constantly check you've not accidentally flashed everyone you're talking to.

And yes to extremely high heels - fab if you can walk effortlessly in them, but let's be honest, most of us can't...

jjwhite · 27/04/2015 15:57

Also, can't believe this hasn't been said yet... Pretty much all slogan t-shirts/jumpers... Usually a French phrase (often misspelled/missing an accent) that is as vapid as it is utterly irrelevant: 'Beau fleur' 'Tête à tête' 'J'adore' 'c'est la vie' ARGHHH!!!

Or, worse, a pretend university top with 'Geek' or 'Nerd' on it....

A quick browse of a few high street websites gives me: 'made in the 80s', 'good vibes' and 'hell yeah'... NO!!!

pictish · 27/04/2015 16:11

YY to those white nail extension topper things. They make women look like they have the hands of a mole...perfect for shovelling soil.

pictish · 27/04/2015 16:16

Those long, pointy (and often far too shiny) shoes that men seem to be wearing these days. Yuck.

niminypiminy · 27/04/2015 16:44

Animal prints here too.

Also, and acknowledging the artistry and creativity that goes into some of them, tattoos. I just don't like them, not the subtle little butterflies, not the sleeves with loads of original design ideas. None of them.

Mankles. There is a profusion of hipster types round near where I work. Think beards, earrings, tattoos and skinny jeans that stop several inches of hairy leg. Apparently the idea is to display a finely tuned ankle in sockless shoes. or something

avocadotoast · 27/04/2015 16:52

jjwhite my friend's boyfriend calls those 'geek' etc shirts "twat tops". I think he has a point Grin

Germgirl · 27/04/2015 16:55

Mankles !! Love it!! Often seen with another pet hate of mine. The man-bun or Mun

FrugalFashionista · 27/04/2015 16:58

I feel totally ridiculous autocorrecting in my head peplums to pepla
Tbh I like quite a few things listed here, including peplums, anything quilted, pleather leggings, red lip Wink, sports luxe sweatshirts, boyfriend and high-waisted jeans.

I hate however with a passion those vacuous slogan t shirts - cannot understand why anyone buys them. Ciao Bella, eh?

I also hate the phrase 'off duty'.

weebarra · 27/04/2015 17:00

Animal print
Velour (possibly with the exception of people who are 2)
Metal on clothes as embellishment
Those highheeled trainer things

pictish · 27/04/2015 17:04

I have never worn any animal print. It's something that's very hard to wear imo.

monkeysaymoo · 27/04/2015 17:06

I was thinking about sleeveless polo jumpers the other day - again if it's cold enough for a jumper then you need sleeves too

FrugalFashionista · 27/04/2015 17:07

This is going to be controversial, but I detest striped t shirts - and calling them Bretons, because, you know, I'm so French. Add Bistro crops and ballet flats and you are a living cliché.

Googlers123 · 27/04/2015 17:10

I hate the terms Bretons and ballet flats too, frugal I really hate it. Also a pop of colour. Aaggghhhh!!

Bexicles · 27/04/2015 17:11

White jeans.

polyhymnia · 27/04/2015 17:13

Pedant alert. Of course, Frugal, the original word peplum comes from the Greek peplon (I'm far too lazy to look for Greek script on 'Word'). Anyway the plural is 'pepla' in both languages, so that's OK!

I like quilted jackets, as long as they're Italian.

Also notice that some Italian labels (thinking of Marina Rinaldi here among others) think it's cool to have really naff English words on T shirts, just as here some stores think French, however distorted, is cute. Yuk to all of them.

ZaraW · 27/04/2015 17:16

Badly dyed hair with a plum or mahogany tint at the crown is not a good look.
Gilets especially the fur ones
knee high boots
Buying clothes at supermarkets just feels wrong
Pandora bracelets
Fedora hats very few people can carry them off.

turdfairynomore · 27/04/2015 17:18

Cath kidston. It's not for me. Or orla kiely's sludge coloured palette. Bu I love a bit of animal print! Or a few skulls! It takes all sorts!

OnlyLovers · 27/04/2015 17:21

I love animal print! I think it's very easy to wear; think of it as a neutral. Leopard print in brown shades is especially good with blue or orange.

FrugalFashionista · 27/04/2015 17:30

Argh my list of sins is getting longer with white jeans and fedoras. And I was skeptical about slashed knees but loving them atm.

Polyhymnia I also like fora, incl MN Wink

And have a soft spot for Engrish - particularly in Korean and Japanese beauty product names Grin Just spotted a Italian/English chimera, AmorePacific.
