Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

Am preparing for an influx of beauty products next week it's my birthday and dm is buying me a new stash of clarins. Yippee

Blueandwhitelover · 27/09/2015 09:45

Do love this thread, I have dipped in and out of it reading since the beginning. Inspired by it I have nearly finished a Lush cream moisturiser that DS3 bought me when he was 16 (he's 24 now) and have hit the bottom of the eyeshadow palette I bought at a Body shop party about 10 years ago. I have shelves and shelves of S and G products and baskets of others. I need to start actually using it all rather than keeping it for special occasions. I have been using daily my favourite perfume (bought on honeymoon-I've been married 7 years) and am determined to join you all in USING it all.

FiveShelties · 27/09/2015 10:42

I love this thread too and have been watching it for a while whilst wondering how posters have accumulated so many products. Yesterday I went to see what I had -- my name is FiveShelties and wow have I got some stuff! It looks so bad now it is all in one place. Blush

Darkchocsprinkles · 27/09/2015 14:56

I have been too busy using up products to post!

Down to a single shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, lip balm, hand cream, foot cream...

Body lotions will take some time, as will hair styling products. But I have hit pan on an eyeshadow Grin

Love this thread. Thank you OP Flowers

FrustratedFrugal · 27/09/2015 19:21

Loving to hear that some of you are inspired by this thread. Here's some more hitting the pan inspiration - a blusher and an old eye shadow duo that I am using up as brow powder!

How did I end up with a product hoard? I was just reading a minimalist blog that said that you spend the first 40 years of your life accumulating stuff and the next 40 years trying to get rid of it.

When I was younger, I was cash poor and generally used up most items. In my thirties I moved overseas and that's when I started buying stuff in bulk. I also discovered drugstores and Sephora and started rewarding myself with a new lipstick, eye shadow or perfume. I travel a lot and started buying makeup as souvenirs. And I could finally afford to buy things I had always wanted. And I think I've also been influenced by blogs and Makeupalley. In many ways it has been great as I've found fab products that really work for me, but I've also amassed quite a few lackluster products

Hey FF, good for you on hitting pan! I have mainly been concentrating on working through masses of stockpiled toiletries - hence the shock of running out of shampoo because I hadn't been squirreling additional bottles of it away for the last 6 months.

I am making a bigger effort to use and enjoy my make-up, and more importantly, trying super hard NOT TO ACQUIRE ANYMORE! As I said at the very beginning it will take me years to make much of a dent in the make-up situation [sooo many palettes and eyeshadows!] ....although I am so close to finishing my first ever bottle of liquid foundation [I only started wearing it two years ago].

I definitely think I agree with this you spend the first 40 years of your life accumulating stuff and the next 40 years trying to get rid of it.

I am usually the queen of decluttering but I have a thing about keeping things for "best". Inspired by this thread I have decided to just use stuff and use stuff up. I got out my "best" Neal's yard shower gel and I used it up and enjoyed using it. I won't be replacing it because I can't justify the cost and there are equally nice cheaper alternatives but it's gone and I enjoyed it. I also had a stash of expensive body butters which I don't use but were gifts and I felt I should use them. I'm working my way through them as hand creams. I've also started using up lots of testers of serums etc - I must have about 20 testers of the boots one alone as I always seem to get a sample of something whenever I buy a lipstick.

One thing in my stash was a Ren lip balm which is lovely. I think it came free with a magazine. I will be replacing that when it runs out.

dogdaydisaster · 28/09/2015 16:31

Doing well here too.

Bobbi Brown bone eyeshadow single - love but have enough similar elsewhere
Indeed labs retinol reface cream, quite liked this, felt nice and gentle
Kiehls day cream, like this but have loads of day cream so won't repurchase.

and a mascara, think it was L'oreal - just a bog standard one, nothing special.

Pixi glow tonic, liked this but will use others up before buying more.

I'm about to run out of my only eye gel (alpha h) so will have to buy a new one- any budget friendly recommendations?

Ememem84 · 03/10/2015 08:17

Was given s literal bucket load of clarins yesterday by dm. It was my birthday and I'd asked her to buy me a replacement moisturiser. Which she did.

They must have had a super fabulous offer on as she's also bought me a new serum (the double one which I've been wanting to get for ages!!) shower/bath gel, a nice fresh perfume, and about a million travel sized things as well as presenting me with a bag full of samples.

So my stash has grown. But it is all things I'll use.

Bb cream is down to a third left. It's taken ages to use up because I'm not keen on it.

Also have about a third of jo Malone citrus perfume left.

Blueandwhitelover · 04/10/2015 08:54

The Lush tin went into the bin yesterday! I also did a full make up yesterday and felt fab. I used my 'best' foundation which was ridiculously expensive (for me) that I bought during a beauty makeover for a birthday photoshoot present. It is fabulous and is in a silver tube with a foundation brush but I've kept it for best and used it rarely. The photoshoot was 7 years ago! I deserve to use my best things! --am hoping that using the best things will encourage me to find other homes for the things I don't enjoy as much and free up some space!

dogdaydisaster · 04/10/2015 10:46

For the first time ever I finished a body shop body butter! I've never been a body lotion user but seem to have built it into my mornings now so it's a habit. I also finished a tube of hydrolauron which I like a lot but will wait a while before buying a replacement. My alpha h eye gel is also done :)

FrustratedFrugal · 04/10/2015 11:08

I've used up a huge pump action bottle of Granado body moisturizer (bought in Brazil years ago) and a crap Italian Sunshilk 2-in-one shampoo that has cluttered up our bathroom cupboard forever.

I had some potentially precancerous sun damage removed earlier this week so have not worn nothing on my face except sunscreen and Aquaphor ointment. My skin feels great - it's making me wonder whether I should go totally makeup free.

Costacoffeeplease · 04/10/2015 11:31

I had a count up of what I still have stashed away yesterday - I have 34 lipsticks/glosses!! I had 8 blushers, and I don't really use blusher, so have given 4 to a friend and her daughter. I really think I could get away with never buying another eyeshadow, lipstick and possibly eyeliner.

IPokeBadgers · 04/10/2015 17:32

Awww shite! Had a terrible week in work last week, got toasted on Friday evening, woke up on Saturday to find a confirmation email from QVC in my inbox....apparently there is some Tarte make-up on its way to me. Blush oh well, suppose I can always return it....

So much for my not acquiring anymore makeup.

Badgers!!

Drunken QVC-ing? Tut tut. At least it's only make up Grin.

A friend of mine ordered one of the Pilates Machines whilst drunk. That took a bit of explaining to her DP and was swiftly returned.

FrustratedFrugal · 05/10/2015 05:04

I've bought five UV protector lip balms over the past week (post sun damage removal). I really need one or two but the rest were impulse purchases. I met a really talented sales guy in a department store yesterday, he sold me the Aussie UV balm I wanted to buy and a second one (double the prize) from a men's line. It does have a lovely consistency and a yummy grapefruit smell. Anyway, now I have a new addition to my mega collection of lip products

FrustratedFrugal · 05/10/2015 08:29

I managed to pass on a few moisturizers, an unwanted bath gift set and a bath soap. I also used up a full-size Wella Flexible Hold hairspray. It's my favorite so would repurchase but I have at least two backups and a few travel size hairsprays.

IPokeBadgers · 05/10/2015 10:01

Hangs head in shame at drunk shopping antics

Thanks for making me smile Paperblank - I feel much better knowing that my forty quid on makeup is amateur compared to other folks' inebriated efforts....a Pilates machine!!? Poor girl! thank God the TSV on Friday night/Saturday morning was make-up and not a bloody dyson!

FrustratedFrugal · 05/10/2015 17:41

My new UV lip balm made my eyes sting unbearably and I may already have lost the second one. So it seems that I have just three left...

daimbardiva · 06/10/2015 10:04

So glad this thread is still going, I'd lost it for a while!

I'm still ploughing my way through skin and body care but barely making inroads into my make up. Why oh why did I buy it in the first place?!

Love that quote about the 40s of your life - def true for me!

Ememem84 · 06/10/2015 18:25

Mango body butter finished !!

Love these from body shop but might not rebuy as a) have a million and b) they are expensive. Think about £12 a pot. I was given loads and had bought some on sale.

Still. Getting there.

Next on list clarins body lotion. I took it on holidays and used half then dumped it back in my spares box.

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 06/10/2015 19:47

Finished a bar of soap today. That might not sound much but I have enough soap and shower gel to last me at least two years, so it is always good to finish one.

Also finished a clinique serum. Not convinced that it did anything at all for my skin and will not repurchase.

IPokeBadgers · 07/10/2015 12:41

It is soooo satisfying to finish a bar of soap isn't it!

Apparently my drunken QVC purchase has arrived so I will be going home to a parcel. Maybe I should just send it back without opening...

kids self that is even a possibility with my make-up magpie ways

Nabootique · 07/10/2015 12:43

I do drunken Cult Beauty shopping Blush

FrustratedFrugal · 07/10/2015 14:05

Finishing a bar of soap is probably more satisfying than anything else as they last forever!
