Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

Another empty here -the Tata Harper serum from my set of sample sizes that I took on holiday. It's nice, but doesn't feel particularly spacial for the price. Now just the moisturiser left to use up, that should be dead by the end of the weekend.

IPokeBadgers · 05/09/2015 12:17

Have just transferred the last few squirts of a bottle of ELPleasures into one of my handbag atomisers. Am counting it as an empty because I can throw out the big bottle and the box. Love Pleasures, have worn it on and off since it was launched, so have to admit that there is already another bottle in the stash Blush

Mayb3 this is wasteful/overindulgent but have taken to using my Modern Muse as an evening fragrance. A couple of squirts after my evening shower just feels nice....means I go to bed all lovely and fragrant and in a good mood! Love it as a perfume but it never sat quite right on me as a daytime scent so it was sitting unused in my drawer...now I am about halfway through the bottle.

"Used up" my favourite black bourjois kohl eyeliner pencil this morning. By dropping it down the unflushed toilet. Sad

Now having to use a different colour. (Grey).

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 09/09/2015 20:58

Another empty - Body Shop Vitamin E moisturiser with spf 15. I really liked this. It soaked in pretty easily and made my skin nice and smooth. It also seemed to last all day. I'll repurchase but not immediately as I've another couple of moisturisers to use first.

FrustratedFrugal · 12/09/2015 19:49

I finished an Elvive conditioner that I have had for years. I never liked it because I felt it made my hair limp. Close to finishing a couple of other full size products too. There is definitely more space in my bathroom these days, but I still have a big stash of hair products.

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 13/09/2015 21:05

I'm on a bit of a roll at the moment - I've finished off a clinique ultrabalm that I've been using for most of the summer. It worked well and I might repurchase in the future but have lots of other things to use up first.

dogdaydisaster · 14/09/2015 11:35

I finished another hand cream today, a crabtree and evelyn lemon one. Meh.

Also I finshed the Maybelline baby skin (?) blur thingy. It was OK but I've sort of gone of the silicoone feel of some of those products; I think it made my foundation slip off a bit.

I'mworking hard on a tub of body butter and my (lovely) alpha H eye gel is almost done.

IPokeBadgers · 14/09/2015 20:18

I'm at an annoying stage of having several decidedly average products that are "nearly there"- I don't love them, I am sick of them and just want them to be finished already! A face wash and a shower gel that I can't wait to be done with.

Although in saying that, have just finished another one of last year's Christmas market soaps: a shea butter one that gave my beloved loccitane soap a run for its money. Love them and will stock up at this year's crimbo market :-)

Half of Mac eyeshadow is finished. I'm close to giving up on the bb cream I just don't think I like it.

Close to using up clarins eye gel and balm. Love these - last year had a bad case of sinusitis. The clarins lady recommended to sort out the puff under my eyes and gave me a discount. Will definitely rebuy.

Perfume is under the halfway line - Jo Malone grapefruit. It's nice. But I think I wast something fresher. I also have a line basil mandarin to use up.

Current love is tresseme keratin shampoo. The red bottle. It's amazing.

Over halfway through body shop macadamia nut straightening balm. It's ok. But can leave my hair sticky.

ipoke I hate being at this halfway stage. Really want to use stuff up so I have an excuse to buy more

Giraffe5 · 17/09/2015 00:05

I've only just seen this thread but I have a drawer or two full of once opened beauty products. They must be harbouring lots of germs. Are people still using up things that have been opened once? Or have you thrown them?

Ememem84 · 17/09/2015 06:36

Hi giraffe I was lucky that the majority of my stuff was new and unopened. Just stuff if bought on a whim. So it's mostly ok. I have had to throw away some of the really old opened products but not many.

Good luck. I found actually knowing what I had and clearing it out very therapeutic.

IPokeBadgers · 17/09/2015 10:34

I think it depends on the products really, doesn't it? I think the general rule is if it has separated, changed colour or smells off, bin it. Be more wary of liquid products.

I think plenty of people have make up and cosmetics that they just keep using for as long as it lasts, regardless of supposed timeframes for chucking something. I have a ten year old eye-shadow palette in my work drawer and I use it a few times a week....not had an eye infection or anything from using it so just sort of continuing on with it.

freely admit I am probably a bit of a minger

I've finished a couple of bubble bath/shower gel/conditioner and body butter type products, although I usually forget to count those when posting on here.

Also finished my Pixi trial size Flawless and Poreless primer, which I really liked so I think I will repurchase at some point, and a sample of the Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask. I would actually buy this, which came as a surprise as I've been underwhelmed by their other products. This left me smooth and glowy though.

Giraffe5 · 17/09/2015 17:16

I watched a slot on This Morning a while ago and they showed that the most bacteria collected in blusher (powder) rather than liquid foundation and lipstick/gloss etc Shock my blusher lasts years

dogdaydisaster · 17/09/2015 19:42

Giraffe, that's really surprising. I don't think I've ever used up a blusher.

Finished a Gatineau age benefit serum this morning, which was sold as a 30 day treatment but which lasted me for twice that. It was nice, very cooling in the morning. Hydralauron will take its place in the mornings now.

Paperblank · 20/09/2015 11:49

Oh! Thank goodness I've found you again! I've missed you Sad

I haven't been getting on very well using stuff up but I did give away a few clarins things yesterday. I bought a new Beauty Flash Balm and the consultant gave me a load of freebies.

I have one very happy friend!

mowglik · 20/09/2015 12:07

ipoke that's a great idea re using perfume in the evenings just because.. I have quite a few little bottles from duty free sets that I really need to give away or use up so will start doing this.. DH may or may not appreciate it Grin

Finished up the first of a triple set of Emma hardie cleansing balms. Still love it but don't love the way the lid cracks open and lets in water and other disgusting things by the look of it. The case gets pretty manky after a while :/

Just remembered I have MAC bb cream compact thing that I need to use up. It's a bit on the pale side so will wait til autumn proper to use it up, in the meantime have 6+ foundations to get through Angry.

Ememem84 · 20/09/2015 22:12

Am away at present so by tomorrow will have used up travel deodorant, dry shampoo and a load of travel clarins. Yay!! More room in hand luggage for treats!! which I shouldn't be buying

IPokeBadgers · 21/09/2015 12:02

Finished a Ted Baker shower gel - sort of a spicy rose fragrance - wont repurchase. Got it last Christmas as a gift and has taken ages to use it up because I really wasn't that fussed on it. I have also been using bars of soap in the shower as well, so everything takes twice as long to use up because I get bored of using a single product: I like having choice depending in my mood.

FrustratedFrugal · 24/09/2015 04:48

Used up: a Banana Boat mini sunscreen, a mini toothpaste.

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 24/09/2015 07:28

Another empty. L'occitane verbena body lotion. I really liked the smell but didn't find it as moisturising as I'd have liked.

Ememem84 · 24/09/2015 08:20

Thought I'd share my progress with my Mac eyeshadow. This is now the second of 4 of the same....

Almost there...!!

Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!
IPokeBadgers · 26/09/2015 19:44

The unthinkable has happened: I have run out of shampoo! This has NEVER happened to me before! but since I started this thread I have been conscious of not spending on things I already had several of in the hoard. So I finished the bottle of shampoo in the shower, went to get a new one from the stockpile and there wasn't one. And the world has not ended.

OP posts:
IPokeBadgers · 26/09/2015 19:46

And there must have been 5 or 6 bottles in the stash when I started this thread!

OP posts:
FrustratedFrugal · 26/09/2015 20:39

Wow Badgers and Ememem, very impressive! I also noticed that my stash is dwindling, lots of it still left but making steady progress. I'm about to cut open a huge pump action bottle of body moisturizer.
