Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

I hope these are food items, and not cosmetics Frugal? Grin

I have fallen off the wagon spectacularly this month. I would be scared to take a picture of my skin care stash! Another cleanser addict here.

FrugalFashionista · 07/08/2015 17:29

Naboo haven't quite gotten into edible beauty yet Wink It's mostly stale spices and crystallized jars of honey. I'd love to hear more about your splurge though

We really wouldn't be here if we didn't have occasional spectacular lapses...

I used to have mini cosmetics hoards in different places, in my bedroom, bathroom, our dining room, our summer home, even at my mother's house. Post-Kondoing, they all are finally in one place - I counted my moisturizing body products and I have 19 different ones hoarded up Blush Most of them are minis but a handful are gigantic pump action bottles (forgotten dining room hoard) so I am stocked up for the rest of the decade

woodhill · 08/08/2015 00:37

On holiday now with a bag full of minis.

Paperblank · 08/08/2015 07:58

Epic Fail for me yesterday....

I caved in and bought the Clinique Bonus Time from Boots. I didn't need the gift but I did need mascara and eye make up remover. I will be donating most of the contents to my mother (who has a hoard at least as big as mine)

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 08/08/2015 08:08

Small success for me yesterday - a mini clinique yellow moisturiser. I know a lot of people don't like it but I find it suits my skin.

Nabootique · 10/08/2015 09:19

I just wrote a list of everything I have bought this month, Frugal, and it is too shameful to disclose! In my defence.... nah, I got nothin' Grin Well, I was very good last month, despite getting commission at work, which usually means a splurge.

I will just say that I have discovered Skyn Iceland and Elemental Herbology, both of which are bloody lovely ranges.

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 10/08/2015 18:15

I think I have displaced my spending on lotions and potions - I have bought three silk scarves in the last fortnight and am eyeing up another one. In my defence, one was half price and the others had 70% off.

IPokeBadgers · 11/08/2015 09:02

I hear ya legohurts, I hear ya....

I was away this weekend and used up a good few sachets of serum and moisturiser. Can't remember what any of them were, but no nasty reactions, thank goodness. Some of them were quite old.

Now back home and my serozonic spray toner seems to be close to the end, but I've thought that for a while.

mowglik · 11/08/2015 10:04

No empties here yet but am away on holiday at the end of this month and have already prepared a small bag full of samples to take in place of my bigger products. Am also making little bags to keep at my in-laws so the minis and samples are coming in handy Grin

IPokeBadgers · 12/08/2015 10:43

Havent finished anything major for ages, really must take a look and see what I can focus my efforts on. I dont know that i will ever make that much progress on make-up, but i do think I am [generally] buying less, and not adding to the stockpile on a weekly basis.

In saying that, I've just remembered, I did manage to finish up a little Champneys bubble bath in the shower last night: it was a little Christmas stocking filler gift and i won't purchase a full size version of the product. Was pleasant enough but i'm not that into fruity scents.

Finished face powder yesterday. Onto using reckon bb cream today.

Paperblank · 12/08/2015 21:50

I totally agree Badgers I have spent a fraction of what I would normally spend on potions and lotions since this thread has been running.

I have actually enjoyed ploughing through my stash and I'm still at the tip of the iceberg. I am wondering how long it will be before I have to go and have a big restock in in Boots.

Another empty - a coconut shampoo from either Lidl or Aldi. Actually, I would recommend this. It was a nice basic shampoo that you could use everyday. I find other shampoos often leave a buildup on my hair that makes it go lank and greasy after a while.

IPokeBadgers · 13/08/2015 09:54

Paperblank - not pissing away money on products that sit unopened for months has been a huge bonus of this thread, so glad i i started it.

It has really made me think hard about how i was spending my money and how much i was wasting on fripperies. Before this thread i was already saving spending money for my trip to Canada [great holiday, loved it] but because i wasnt throwing money around on random purchases [extending beyond toiletries and make-up] i actively made the effort to scrape another few hundred into my savings account.....so was able to add that to a different savings pot, allowing me to buy a motorbike sooner than i thought i would be able to because i had the extra quids needed Grin

I'm on holiday and using up travel sizes. why do my dh and ds not bring their own stuff. my loccitaine almond shower gel was popular

FrugalFashionista · 17/08/2015 05:35

I'm still working on my stash, lots of hair products almost gone. I found that have unthinkingly hoarded up some random stuff, like cotton wool, matchsticks, tampons and toothpaste, and working on using up those as well.

daimbardiva · 17/08/2015 12:52

A few empties here -

Keracare honey and shea cowash - repurchased already. I love this.

Balance hylauronic serum. This was ok - cheap but I'm not sure it made much difference. Unlikely to repurchase.

Flexitol heel balm -a staple for me so I'm sure I will repurchase, but I'm giving the pound world version a whirl first as it seems to have similar levels of urea.

daimbardiva · 17/08/2015 12:55

I too am finding that this thread is great for making me think about using up my stash. The thrill I get from finishing something is almost replacing the previous buzz of buying...

I'm doing well w skincare but my make up stash is not going down much, simply because I just don't use that much make up. Which does beg the question why do I have so much of it?!

Ememem84 · 21/08/2015 06:27

Make up stash is slowly being used up. Very slowly. I've hit the pan on one side on my Mac eyeshadow. It's just a sparkly pink/nude one. Nothing special. But I love it and will probably rebut once I've used it and the urban decay naked pallet up.

Currently using up revlon bb cream. I'm not sure if I like it. It's ok. But I don't usually wear much more than a moisturiser so it feels heavy.

Halfway through bottle of Jo Malone perfume (grapefruit) which I love.

And hoping today will be the day I can ditch my desk handcream. Have been using it at work for the last 7 months. It's lovely (honey jasmine and orange) Will replace with 8 hour cream.

I'm finding I'm being more careful when shopping now (not just on cosmetics). I'm really thinking about what I have. And whether I need it. If in doubt I put it back and come home to check. Then if I do need it buy it the next day (work in town so am always near shops). So in a roundabout way I'm saving money.

Dh has also started using stuff up too....!

Nabootique · 21/08/2015 08:34

I finished up a Body Shop Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask this week. It's okay, but I've used better clay masks and some days it seemed to sting my face a bit, although didn't leave anything visible negative affects. I doubt I'll repurchase.

Coming near the end of three cleansers and possibly a primer (hard to tell from the packaging) so looking forward to reporting those next week!

FrustratedFrugal · 21/08/2015 18:03

Just wanted to say that I love this thread and am diligently using up my weird stashes (matchboxes almost gone).

Went to a new hairdressers and she spent the entire appt trying to sell me more hair products

IPokeBadgers · 25/08/2015 15:12

I haven't finished up anything lately and feeling a bit frustrated....but managed not to buy anymore toiletries, even though was tempted to do a stupid bingey-spendy-splurge on the Superdrug website the other day.

But I didn't Grin

Like Ememem84 upthread, "If in doubt I put it back and come home to check"

Oh, and all the hacker shite that is going on is doing my head in!

Badgers there are long uneventful periods but you will get there - and well done resisting!

I've used up a big 500ml bottle of Wella shampoo. My favorite but not repurchasing, I want to use up everything else first.
