Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

Op you're not the only person like this like I said I was too it's a cheap and easy cheer up tool.

Don't beat yourself up over it! Smile

SuperFlyHigh · 02/03/2015 20:09

www.moneysavingexpert.com have use up beauty item threads too

madmomma · 02/03/2015 21:09

I could fill my bathtub with the body lotions and butters that I have. I seem to forget that I NEVER MOISTURISE MY FLAMING BODY FFS!!! I don't do it, ever, because I hate feeling greasy, so why oh why do I keep buying it??!!
At least with shampoos and foundations they get used eventually. Eyeshadows and lipsticks are the killers.

SuperFlyHigh · 02/03/2015 22:04

madmomma have you tried body oils they tend to dry to a not so greasy finish....

Talcum powder can also have luxury touch (not sure a mousturising) non greasy and floris etc do posh scented ones...

Itscurtainsforyou · 02/03/2015 22:08

I have also had a quick sort out. Some old makeup thrown out. Have a sealed, boxed perfume (angel) that seems a shame to just give to charity - what do you think? Ebay?

RJnomore · 02/03/2015 22:16

I'm back!

We had a use it up thread last year and it was great.

I got through all the random cleansers I had accumulated - now I only have the Clinique stuff I like and I won't be lured in by special offers on anything else. I also used all the odds and sods of foundation and again, only the Clinique one I like. I won't waste money buying things I don't really like just to try them again.

I even got through all the body lotions to the point where I had to buy body butter - unheard of! Then Xmas came along and I have lots of shower gels, body scrubs and body butters but I am working through them again and I won't buy until I have finished.

Things I cannot seem to ever use up - foot creams Grin

And colour makeup - eyeshadow, lip stuff, nail varnish - I don't mind having lots of although I did go through and rationalise all teh colours I thought were mistakes though and let dd1 loose on what she wanted.

Some makeup I probably will never use - the Chanel camellias lip pallette is too pretty to use up. But I enjoy having it. And now I don't buy for the sake of it - I buy the stiff I like, mostly Clinique, Chanel or Dior and I buy in a quite structured way. I feel much more in control although I do have loads of the stuff still!

MsVanRein · 02/03/2015 22:17

Itscurtains what size? I'll swap it for something if you fancy. Is there anything you are in need of?

Itscurtainsforyou · 02/03/2015 22:25

Ooh msvanrein! It's 25ml EDP (non-refillable). Not sure what I need tbh, the only things I'm buying are clarins skincare and benefit/bare minerals make up Smile.

MsVanRein · 02/03/2015 22:29

I will have a hoak to see if I have anything I think might suit - I have a lot of unopened products!

If you think of anything in particular let me know and I'll look, it's like a beauty hall in my spare room Grin

Annarose2014 · 02/03/2015 23:30

I think watching "Empties" videos on YT gets you into the right mindset. They get through so much! It makes you realise you really can get through stuff if you work at it.

I sometimes gather all my empties in a bag for a month and its SO satisfying to see the bottles accumulate.

Has anyone heard of "Pan that Palette"?

Basically you have to empty a whole eyeshadow palette in a year - all shades. I think I'm going to start it tomorrow with my Naked 2 palette which is my least favourite. The rules I'm making are: no buying of any eyeshadows until its finished, and I can use other eyeshadows (to stop getting bored & neglecting the rest of my stuff) but I also have to use at least one shade from the palette every time.

FrugalFashionista · 03/03/2015 07:07

Sorry if i am slightly obsessed but I realized there is one more moisturizer that is almost gone. So naturally applied it today: will get rid of this sucker soon!

I also checked my blushers and lipsticks and reorganized them. Top of the stack: products that are not my favorites but have been used quite a bit. Because my aim is to reduce clutter, I want to get rid of duplicates and extras.

Annarose good luck with the Naked2 challenge!

madmomma · 03/03/2015 09:18

super floris talc you say? I can feel a purchase coming on... Clarins used to do an amazingly light body lotion that was probably full of alcohol but dried instantly and left the most incredible smoothness. But they discontinued it years ago and nothing I've tried is anything like it.

SuperFlyHigh · 03/03/2015 09:31

madmomma - yes Floris talc - I haven't tried it but a friend of mine who likes their scents thinks it's heavenly

www.florislondon.com/en_gbp/women/bath-and-body/talcum-powder

there's also a link to some lightweight moisturisers:-

intothegloss.com/2013/07/summer-light-weight-body-moisturizers-lotions-and-oils/

companies are buggers (like Clarins) when they discontinue a perfectly good product!

ladymalfoy · 03/03/2015 09:40

My name is Ladymalfoy and I'm a product junkie. The problem I have is when I run out of a couple of products and I restock I get the little gift sets.
I've stopped buying products just to get these gift sets now, though.
As with the rest of you I have day and night out make up.
I'm going to go upstairs and de-prod.

SuperFlyHigh · 03/03/2015 09:45

lady that's bloody annoying isn't it the giftsets? unless you bought to get them. i found - yes YOU Clinique - it all seemed very samey - Black Honey or whatever lipstick, chubby stick (not sold on them) or their yellow moisturiser. never new stuff, never what I'd use. apart from say one product. Clarins are or were better at free gifts.

one of the reasons Clinique don't get my business anymore and their products are mostly rubbish in my opinion anyway!

Picastyle · 03/03/2015 09:50

I used to buy clinique for the gifts too until I realised I hated the moisturiser.

FrugalFashionista · 03/03/2015 10:23

Gift sets and 2-for-1s and 3-for-1s are the devil's work. I have two Armani lipsticks in slightly wrong shades because I loved the big black velvet cosmetics pouch that came with them. To be fair, I have used the pouch a lot.

Bohemond · 03/03/2015 10:32

I sold a load of stuff at car boot last year. I priced everything at £1, £2 and £3 - it all went and I came home with a nice wodge of cash.

SuperFlyHigh · 03/03/2015 12:29

Bohemond what exactly did you sell? unopened perfume, body lotion etc?

RJnomore · 03/03/2015 12:38

Ah see - I like the clinique freebies! They are just the right size to fly with - and usually you get the 7 day scrub, the facial wash and the yellow moisturiser which are all products I use.

I am less fond of the makeup in the freebies - although I did get a lipstick once that I like, its in my take it out with me every day makeup bag being used up.

CoolGee · 03/03/2015 13:46

I horde body lotions and bubble baths/oils. I'm terrible for it. I've got two whole drawers in my bedroom, two drawers in the bathroom and a cabinet full of them. I don't even go for particularly expensive stuff (a few Aveda products)...more a sucker for offers on regular brands (ten different Victoria's Secrets body lotions anyone?!).

I've decided no more purchases until I am down to my last two bottles of each. Gotta be strict about it!

MrsMyrtleMarple · 03/03/2015 14:22

Can I join?
I have at least six wash bags full of make up and a stack of eyeshadow pallets six+ inches high.
I have two huge baskets of hair products and a further two of bath products and body lotions/butters. Another smaller basket of cleansers and moisturisers. I also have ten bottles of shampoo and conditioner.
I do use all the products, but the make up will last me the rest of my life.
I have a friend who is worse than me and she keeps giving me gorgeous stuff that she doesn't use. Rude to say no.
My worst failing is moisturising stuff for hair, body or face. I have very dry skin and hair.
I forgot to mention that I must have at least twenty bottles of perfume. I bought another one yesterday, and popped into Lush.
I think that as long as you're paying all your bills and feeding your kids, it doesn't really matter. There are worse weaknesses.

marava · 03/03/2015 15:27

I'd also like to join. Hello, my name is Marava and I am a make up addict. At the last count I have 70 lipsticks. I am not a make up artist. There is no other reason for me to have this many lipsticks other than greed and a quest for the perfect lipstick. I am horrified to think that by someone's calculation upthread that a lipstick will last 3 months with everyday application, I have enough lip product to last 17.5 YEARS. SWEET BABY JESUS!!!!! I know it's a hobby and my bills are paid, kids fed etc but it's such a waste and all that packaging is so bad for the environment. This thread is my first step to recovery.

AWholeLottaNosy · 03/03/2015 16:30

If you've got stuff to get rid of,a great place to donate it to is women's refuges. People often leave with almost nothing and I'm sure the women there would really appreciate some beauty treats. I chucked out a lot of stuff when I decided to go sls and silicone free. Made me feel less wasteful knowing that it was all going to a good home.

AWholeLottaNosy · 03/03/2015 16:37

There was a 3 for 2 offer on beauty products in Boots yesterday. I was so tempted but I didn't buy anything! Also managed to walk out of the Neal's Yard shop without buying anything. Just spent £1.50 on almond oil for my hair in Superdrug. ( not £7 in Neal's Yard). Result!

I also wonder how long do beauty products last? They don't have a sell by date but they must decompose eventually...?
