Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

iklboo look for an independent makeup artist near you who will do a skin type/colour consultation.

I've done loads of these and always had positive feedback.

AWholeLottaNosy · 04/03/2015 23:48

I just cleared out a drawer ( am also on the stop procrastinating thread which is great) and discovered 2 La Roche Posay moisturisers I'd forgotten I'd bought! So that's 2 more products to use up. A bit embarrassing as I spent £15 recently on another LRP moisturiser recently Blush. So I don't need to buy any more moisturisers for about a year!

I think for me I buy so many products as I'm always looking for the Holy Grail product that will make me look young, dewy, unblemished etc so I fall for the marketing hype ( and threads on S&B don't help either...) Smile

AWholeLottaNosy · 04/03/2015 23:51

Sponge bob, I don't know whether stuff for refuges needs to be unopened. Will see if I can find out. I hate the thought of stuff that's perfectly fine being thrown away when it could be used and appreciated by someone that has so little.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/03/2015 00:57

Me too whole.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 05/03/2015 01:45

Does anyone do double cleansing? I've only ever heard of it on here but could be a good way to get through your stash Grin

Eliza22 · 05/03/2015 07:39

Thanks for this OP. I am not alone! Thought it was just me in the vicious circle that is....an addiction to shiny, beautiful things Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 05/03/2015 12:19

Not double cleansing, can't be arsed with the nonsense.

My cleansers some in big tubes and can be used on the body as well.
Double tasking, not double cleansing.

FrugalFashionista · 05/03/2015 17:03

Thanks for the Nars tips - will try.
Today no time for slap, but a foot soak I never use made an enjoyable bubble bath for DC.

Do you ladies repurpose products? My neck is going to get a lot of love, basically anything that does not work on my face will do on my neck. I have also used eye cream on my legs Wink

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 05/03/2015 21:05

Can primer be repurposed? I have a couple of tubes of protect and perfect primer that came in gift sets, but I don't wear makeup very often.

MsVanRein · 05/03/2015 21:11

I picked a couple of products that were nearly empty to use over last few days as an attempt to try to work through my stockpile.

So have finished a Clinique TTDO eye makeup remover, Origins Make A Difference Plus moisturiser, Chanel - Le Blanc de Chanel primer and a Dior Addict Lip Glow balm today. My empties are looking great.

Problem is this isn't really helping me as I loved them all and will repurchase! Already have TTDO and the Dior balm in my unopened collection actually!

MsVanRein · 05/03/2015 21:12

lego - some primers work really well to tame flyaway hair and disguise split ends!

iklboo · 05/03/2015 21:33

Thanks MsVanRein, that's a good idea.

TeaAddict235 · 05/03/2015 21:48

I've been reading, and probably should join this thread. I am a hair products junkie! If there's a new shampoo, i've probably got it. A new conditioner? got it. Leave in? know about it and have it on my list! it's that bad, yes.

The thing is, that I wash my hair 1-2 a week in winter, and maybe cowash daily in the summer, but that is it. I blame You Tube, and have cut back on the amount of hair videos that I watch. In the meantime, I have a huge box of mainly conditioners that I need to work through. I've tried fobbing a few off to my little sister, but she's not too interested.

Also, I'm a bit fed up with this whole curlies, no cones nonsense, as it limits my product useage Angry. Is it just me or do cone based conditioners smell nicer?

Housewife2010 · 06/03/2015 07:31

You can use up your least favourite conditioners as shaving cream.

Lndnmummy · 06/03/2015 10:56

This used to be me! Seriously addicted to this stuff. When I was on mat leave I just did not have the funds anymore so was forced to get by with what I had. I promised myself i would not repurchase anything that I already owned even if I wanted to try something new. My son is now 3 and I am still working my way through some of the stash (mainly eyeshadow and lipsticks left). For that entire year I was off I bought nothing. I had no idea I could survive that long;)

I miss my splurging lifestyle, for me that is such a pick me up. When ds goes to school next year and our nursery fees comes down then I will start treating myself again and every now and again buy something "just because".

Tbh - i cant wait

chrome100 · 06/03/2015 11:10

I love soaps and potions and get a lot as presents. I fling them all in a basket and have a rule that I cannot start a new one until one is finished. This means I am (slowly) working through the back log but that eventually they'll all get used. Plus it makes choosing a new one from the basket a treat!

Sixpencenonethericher · 06/03/2015 12:08

Mine is make up but I am obsessed with perfume
3 x 100 mls next perfume
2 x next small
Angel
Armani si
Tresor
Anna sui fairy dance
Britney Spears
Estée Lauder
Philosophy pure grace
Library of fragrance clean skin and fresh laundry
And these are just the ones I can remember got about 10 others

Annarose2014 · 06/03/2015 12:34

Oh God perfume...I don't have that many, only about five, but they're all almost completely full. They're going to go off at this rate.

I did finish off a Vera Wang Princess last week but it was only by spraying it like a mad woman, reapplying at lunchtime etc. There was only a centimetre left and I was sick of it so I really worked hard to get it done. Fantastic to be able to bin it.

One good perfume tip someone told me is to have a bottle next to your deodarant at all times. Therefore you spray one, then spray the other.

Wilding · 06/03/2015 12:46

Might have been mentioned already on here but if you have beauty products you're not that bothered about using up but don't want to waste, you can donate lightly used make-up and toiletries to Give and Makeup who pass them on to women in refuges and shelters. I've done that when I've tried something a few times and decided I didn't like it. Might be a good option if you think something's going to go off before you get around to using it!

FrugalFashionista · 06/03/2015 12:56

I have lots and lots of perfume but it is one of my hobbies. Perfumes bring me joy and all of it fits in a few dresser drawers. If you have bottles that you don't like, however, you could try trading them here, or you could eBay or carboot them. I'm sure women in shelters would appreciate them too!

Steadily working my way through the products I'm trying to finish - eye cream, moisturizer, SPF toothpaste, lipstick, blush. Today got the Nars blush about right. Normally I can just swipe in the general direction of my cheekbones with good results, but this bugger is so pigmented that it requires extreme precision and constraint. Not easy early in the day...

MsVanRein v impressed with your empties! My goal is to finish off the products I don't really like, mixing in a few every day. But it sounds like you have already found a bunch of truly stellar ones! Anyway, if you had back-ups already, there will fewer jars and less clutter!

FrugalFashionista · 06/03/2015 12:58

Fantastic link, thanks Wilding!

MsVanRein · 06/03/2015 15:54

That's brilliant Wilding thank you for the link - I have some full size and travel size unopened Lancôme skincare I will donate as I'm pretty sure I won't use it.

Yes Frugal I was pleased with my progress! Now ive got through those I've chosen a different half-full moisturiser and primer to use and have decided to put two nearly done lipsticks in rotation until they are finished!

AWholeLottaNosy · 06/03/2015 17:22

Wilding thanks for that link. I had suggested that earlier but didn't know how to go about it. Such a good use for unwanted products.

SuperFlyHigh · 06/03/2015 21:36

Wilding thanks for the link great and I'll pass it on. Smile

Postchildrenpregranny · 06/03/2015 23:58

I tried to donate (mostly shampoo and conditioner ) via our church to a womens refuge at Christmas but it had to be unopened/unused.
My daughter mentioned the link given higher up, but it's not clear if theyll accept opened stuff? I would have thought anything in a tube/with a pump action would be OK , i fnot something you put your fingers into ?
