I liked ( and bought) this in black www.marksandspencer.com/v-neck-jumper/p/p22379655 - obv usual website disclaimer. Pity not in a better fabric but will look ace with a vest under and my leatherette trousers.

also this coat was LOVELY in grey www.marksandspencer.com/buttonsafe-wool-blend-double-breasted-coat-with-cashmere/p/p22312160

and would have liked this if not so long www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-striped-pencil-skirt/p/p22357825 here

I agree. British company, pay their taxes, better ethical standards than most. Let's try and look for the good stuff though heaven knows they make it tricky sometimes.

BlueEyedWonder · 27/01/2015 07:08

I work in a town that has a small M&S store but they seem to have a bit of every range crammed in. They appear to be trying to be all things to all women and it just doesn't work for me.
I sometimes go to the larger MK store which is better. Like lots of high street stores, you have to keep your eye out for the odd gems.
My biggest issue with M&S is lack of small sizing. They cut generously anyway so I need a 6 but can sometimes also wear an 8 depending on the style. The 6 is amost consistently sold out online unless you happen to see it the day it hits the website. I needed a new trench for work, saw one in the petite section - yep the 6 sold out despite being "new in". I ordered the 8 as there was 20% off and I had a further money off voucher.
One thing I am going to praise this season is their running / sports clothes. Really good at a better price than Nike.

Bunbaker · 27/01/2015 07:21

I tried to find something I liked in Next yesterday as I had a voucher for them, but failed.

Why do fashion designers insist on insisting that a colour is "in" when most people will just walk past it because they either don't like it or it doesn't suit them? I bet most of these lurid clothes will end up in the summer sales.

Today's clothes buyers are more savvy and won't buy something just because someone tells them it is the height of fashion.

Oh, and I really, really don't like the current 60s retro fashions. I think they will date very quickly.

Armpitt · 27/01/2015 07:24

when you go to a large store on a good day, you wonder why you ever even go into the small ones.

OP posts:
Armpitt · 27/01/2015 07:25

multi racial as some bits of the Uk are, most of us remain pale stodgy pinky white all year, and they don't realise that these colours generally dont suit we caspars

we need SOMEONE who works near a flagship store.

then we can post stuff we think looks nice and they can beetle off there and report back.

Yes final reduction/yellows ticketed items are in returnable for reasons such as they don't fit etc. I think there is something on the sticker saying no goodwill returns.

noddyholder · 27/01/2015 08:42

I live 2 mins from s big one will look when I go in for my bacon lol

ouryve · 27/01/2015 11:19

Oh, I like that Tencel Denim Tunic. Possibly a bit pale for me and I'd probably look like a sofa in it, but Tencel does hang so well made into that sort of fabric.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/01/2015 14:59

I went into the big one in Birmingham today, and I still feel obliged to grumble. Most stuff was really, really awful. I bought a men's v neck cashmere jumper. The only other thing I was tempted by was a hat, also in the men's section.

I saw a nice pair of black skinnies, ankle grazers with zips on the ankles, but they had only one pair, which were a size 16.

I don't WANT to slag them off, really I don't. I like M&S - as I said earlier - and also their staff are lovely and they always act as if they care about their customers -BUT, I honestly think that it is inexcusable that they get it so, so wrong so very often. It really shouldn't be that difficult.

noddyholder · 27/01/2015 15:17

Some of the best of british stuff is nice but overpriced

Lardylassnomore · 27/01/2015 17:16

I am a big m and a fan but sometimes the prices are very off putting. I used to like the limited collection stuff but sometimes I just wonder how long it is before it goes in the sale and some of the fabrics used are just not what I want for the money.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 27/01/2015 17:45

Inspired by this thread I had a mosey around our local big branch. Very varied. I quite like the bright pale green colour, but the mustard and Barbie pink was a bit trying.

My 75 year old DMIL would probably like this Mauve item for example because it's "cheerful" and 75 year olds who like cheerful colours are an entirely valid market.

I rather fancy this sporty little number. I even quite fancy the much-mocked blue and yellow flower shirt here - I think it would be very striking (in a good way) worn with minimalist trousers/skirt and heels.

There are some good basic plain tops and camisoles (too dull to link) and some fantastic basic leather work stilettos which I'm gutted that my feet are the wrong shape for - I'd have bought all three colours like a shot.

But so many of the prints are just horrid. Who the hell would want to wear this? Or the various shirts with lace shoulders that you'd see a brastrap through?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/01/2015 17:47

I've got some of those Autograph stilettos but in black suede - love them.

noddyholder · 27/01/2015 17:49

Sweat top is nice didn't see in our M and S

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/01/2015 17:49

Love this too but am far too norky for it.

noddyholder · 27/01/2015 17:54

love it too same issue!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/01/2015 17:58

:(

Bunbaker · 27/01/2015 18:00

Nope. It doesn't do anything for me. I am not norky enough for it Sad

ouryve · 27/01/2015 18:38

Being perimenopausal, that sweat top would do what it says on the tin.

I'll confess I like the mauve jumper, but it's a little to light and bright for me (needs to be darker or duller!) And it's acrylic. For that sort of style, I'd want something with a good cotton content, so I could wear it next to my skin.

Armpitt · 27/01/2015 19:41

and LO! the coat arrived today ( had to order online to get a discount)
I am a busty 12 and its fine without a bulky jumper under.
All my sons say to one accord ' i quite like that actually ' Hmm

I'm going on to have another look as I have a voucher.
I'll probably avoid the 'has your cat died' flappy trousers though.

There must be some mileage in a nice stuff at marks surely? I bet someone could commit to only wearing M&S for a year and pull it off.

I like the look of

beautiful colour

Like the sleeves on this striped top

and

swim costume
