Does THIS look a good enough match for swatch 20?

Thanks all for the welcome Smile

didi, I don't think I'll be much use on the lipstick front! I'm terrified of bright lipsticks - I remember some of the fuschia ones the consultant recommended and I would simply never wear them. I love the Revlon Lip Butter because it's quite sheer and doesn't shout 'look at me!' I could be persuaded to wear a proper deep bluey red though, I suppose, so I might be brave and start looking.

QueenC glad you liked the top! (and also that you bought it online - I bought it in the shop and was charged full-price - £45 - then got home, looked on the website and saw it was £27. So have just returned it to the shop and ordered it online to be delivered to the shop for free for me to collect next week. Madness)

NowhereNow I also have size 8 feet and also avoid pointy toes for that reason. Also they don't feel right on me. I have a pair of black pointy kitten heels from LKBennett that get dragged out for interviews but they're not very comfortable and I always feel a bit odd in them Grin

JuneFromBethesda · 30/11/2014 17:13

As well as a fear of bright lipsticks, I have a fear of blusher. (I sound insane Hmm) I had very pink cheeks as a teenager and hated them, so actually used green corrective moisturiser (anyone remember that!?) to tone them down. As a result the idea of adding colour to my cheeks seemed ridiculous and it's only really in the last few years that I've started using blusher. My skin has lost colour as I've got older so I know that blusher is a good idea but I'm still afraid of applying too much ... so I probably don't apply enough. The sheer Estee Lauder blusher you bought looks lovely Sorrel but do you think it's idiot-proof?

I'm currently using the blusher I bought from the HoC consultant 20 years ago - which demonstrates how little I've worn blusher over the last 20 years Grin

SorrelForbes · 30/11/2014 17:55

Most definitely. The colour is very sheer so you can build up the level of brightness quite easily. I used three blobs on each cheek but I do like my blusher bright!

AsBrightAsAJewel · 30/11/2014 17:56

green corrective moisturiser - yes I wore it too, to cover the permanent redness and I hoped tone down my frequent blushing Blush.

I have pale skin and freckles. I wear this in French Kiss very sparingly. I use a big brush and apply to just the apples of my cheeks, with a final sweep diagonally up and out. It makes my eyes look better and when I don't wear it people ask if I'm feeling well, so it must be doing something! I hated blush for many years but as I've aged I feel flat without it and would rather wear it to eye-makeup when I'm in a hurry.

Was in town and popped into Gap and bought this in rich wine and a LS top in the same colour - both at 40% off (think offer ends tonight or tomorrow),

NeitherHereOrThere · 30/11/2014 18:02

I don't wear blusher either (although I did back in the 80s when bronzers and highlighters were in).

MrPop · 01/12/2014 13:27

Mimi how did your style day go?

mimiasovitch · 01/12/2014 14:24

It was fab. The others didn't go in the end, so it was a one to one. I rather enjoyed that if I'm honest. I'm a romantic with a little bit of classic, which she reckons is why I'm not over fond of romantic ruffles and too many details, though I'm quite happy to wear a bold print. It did seem very me, though as I said upthread, it feels difficult to count enough points up when dressing. I generally don't like things on my wrists, but am keeping an eye out for a bold yet feminine silver bangle that doesn't cost a fortune. I may transform some of my tesco vouchers into goldsmiths vouchers and treat myself. Again. Most of my wardrobe fits in the style very well, though apparently I should have longer cardigans with ruffled edges, rather than all the crew necks I have. I do tend to wear them open anyway, so I think they'll do.

JuneFromBethesda · 01/12/2014 16:12

How about something like this, mimi? I get compliments every time I wear it, I love it (and it's cheap!)

Thanks for the tip, Sorrel - I'll keep an eye out for that Estee Lauder blusher.

JuneFromBethesda · 01/12/2014 16:15

While finding the link for that cuff, I came across this solid silver one - so beautiful, I wish I could afford it. It looks so tactile.

Stokey · 01/12/2014 16:50

Hello June - I have a Bobbi Brown blusher which I love but I think I have the opposite problem. I'm freckly but a bit olive skinned so look sallow... I coulod never carry off green! I definitely recommend a make-up counter though.

I'm a big fan of red lips DidI. Mac Ruby Woo is a very grown up matte red with blue undertones, a bit drying, but I love Chanel rouge allure no 14. Cheap and cheerful but still a good colour is Maybelline SuperStay 14hrs in ravishing Rouge.

I'm after a dark burgundy or plum lipstick now that winter is approaching if anyone can resommedn a good one. I bought a grey sparkly jumper in H&M the other day but nothing very colourful recently.

kersh33 · 01/12/2014 17:24

Hi All fellow winters :-),

I am a recently diagnosed Sultry Winter Romantic Classic, I have been busily sorting out my wardrobe and now I am starting to look at makeup. I bought a couple of HOC lipsticks at my colour session (512 is my favourite) but I find that they don't last all day. I'm often on client premises delivering training and can't pop out to the loo every 5 minutes to top up my lipstick so need something that lasts a little longer. I've had the Max Factor Lipfinity recommended, but I really struggled to be able to identify which colours would suit a winter. I was wondering whether the hive mind of the Winter group would be able to help. I don't mind a bright lip, but prefer the darker burgundies to the bright pinks.

Thanks for your help!!

mimiasovitch · 01/12/2014 17:45

Lipstick-wise I love Chanel rouge coco in Rivoli. It's longer lasting than the hoc ones, though I do need to reapply throughout the day, but it feels lovely, and is deep without being too vampy. I'd buy it again, anyway.

June - I really like that cuff, thank you.

didireallysaythat · 01/12/2014 17:55

I really do appreciate all the recommended lipsticks. It really helps to know what works for other winters as I think left to my own devices I'd wimp out and stay with clear lip gloss.

So here's my list of colours to try tomorrow at the airport

MAC: Can't resist, Russian red, plumful, Russian red gloss, ruby woo

Channel: Rouge allure 14, Rouge coco in rivoli

I'll revisit the Revlon butters (I liked the feel but not the colour I tried) if I go into a large Boots sometime. I can try Maybelline as well then.

Are there any others I should try ? I'm quite tempted to start with glosses rather than lipsticks as I find them less frightening, plus like kersh I can't easily reapply during the day but a lip gloss in my jeans pocket (a) doesn't melt and (b) can be applied without needing a mirror (although maybe this isn't so true for brighter colours).

I've got another trip in a couple of weeks' time so I can have two shots at this !

didireallysaythat · 01/12/2014 17:58

mimi as a bargain bucket approach, I bought a silver bracelet from tesco which was quite chunky just to try out whether I can hack larger jewellery on my wrists. Quite glad I didn't spend more than £5 as it turns out they don't go with lab coats at all !

mimiasovitch · 01/12/2014 18:00

Try estee lauder red ego (the colour envy lipsticks) too - it's gorgeous.

SorrelForbes · 01/12/2014 19:20

I was just about to recommend Estee Lauder Pure Colour Envy in Red Ego. The Dominant shade is great too. Very long lasting as well.

Tom Ford Bruised Plum is a dark plum shade. It's a bit dry though.

The Estee Lauder blusher has lasted well today. I applied it at 5.30am and it looks ok now.

JuneFromBethesda · 01/12/2014 19:30

Glad you like it, mimi. I don't much like things on my wrists either but I've discovered that cuffs are fine, because they don't move about and bother me like bracelets do.

I just remembered I read a good blog post about red lipsticks over the weekend - here. Obviously you can't tell exactly how each shade will look with your own individual colouring but it's interesting to see the differences in each one.

Hi Stokey Smile I plan to visit a decent make-up counter some time in the new year, for a proper teach-me-what-makeup-to-use session. I've been doing the same 'face' forever (very minimal, mascara, bit of eyeliner, a tiny smidge of blusher Grin) and I'd love to have some new tips from an expert.

QueenCardigan · 01/12/2014 21:57

Green corrective colour-blast from the past. Do they still make the stuff?

I wear blusher every day now too. After years when I was younger of trying to hide my redness I now look a bit pale without blusher. Also I like the fact that it makes me look a bit girly (that's obviously the ingenue in me). I wear a bobbi brown that I bought for my wedding 10 years ago.

Lipstick wise I finf the hoc lasts well for a night out. I think it depends on the colour though as the red one I had turned pink and went patchy but the fuchsia (62) is great.

I love bracelets and most days will wear a watch and bracelet on one wrist and 2 bracelets on the other. Sometimes I even add in another too. They're all pretty delicate though. Can't do cuffs although I love them especially that 500 quid one linked

didireallysaythat · 01/12/2014 22:07

Just realised that while I don't wear a bracelet cuff, I do wear a oclock watch - today in bright red and it's slightly over size so it's more like a bangle. I'm toying with the idea of a blue case (I've got a green one but that's not a great colour is it?) but I wear too much blue I think. But perhaps it would offset my favourite black....

QueenCardigan · 02/12/2014 09:49

june thank you so much. The top looks amazing on me .

QueenCardigan · 02/12/2014 09:53

I also got this bag which I only paid £36 for although it's not on the HOF website anymore so must have sold out.

Stokey · 02/12/2014 10:05

Good blog June the Rimmel kate Moss 20 she's wearing looks very like the HoC fuschia 62, which I have too but find it comes off very quickly. I think the Rimmel Glam Plum she's wearing is the kind of shade I'm after.

I'm going into town today & am planning to hit JL & look at lipsticks, I want to try Mac Plumful and Rebel, the Estee Lauder Red ego & the Tom Ford one.

On the cuff bracelets front, DH has hinted he may buy me a Hipanema for Xmas but am a bit worried they're not very wintery colours. I would have gone for the bronze as am a big fan of red but of course the metal is wrong. The other option is the Viper but again it's not a very wintery green.

I'm having an (enforced) "career break" at the moment but try and wear skirts at least 3 days a week so I don't get stuck in jeans. I quite like dressing down a pencil skirt with a sweatshirt or chunky jumper and trainers.

NowhereNow · 02/12/2014 12:17

I just spent ages scrolling back clicking on links to try to find a cuff someone linked to yesterday. Finally I remembered it was on a different thread, but I'm going to post the link on here too in case I want to find it again:

www.lovedazzle.com/shop/Cuffs-by-Sue-Gregor-Magenta-Fen-cuff.aspx

It's not the kind of thing I usually wear, but I'm drawn to it (perhaps because of the colour).

Stokey, do you think your DH has already purchased? There was a silver one on Hush but it's out of stock. Googling brought up another site that has lots more choice, but no idea whether it's legit or not. Either of these any good?
