Remember our chats??

Our SOTD (scent of the day)?

Is there a thread I've missed Shock

If not, lets take it up here :)

SOTD an unknown sample from my perfume drawer, woodsy and irisy, am baffled but enjoying it!

OP posts:
shins · 03/12/2014 13:19

SOTD: Bulgari Black thanks Toys! The opening is a bit scary and rubbery (as I said, it reminded me at first of Lonestar Memories by Tauer which wins the prize for the most scary perfume I've smelled so far apart from SM. DH's review of Lonestar Memories: "Oh ...Grandad's dead. On the lino covered sofa, while smoking Rothmans") but it dries down into a lovely sweetness with a strange, not unpleasant plastic element.

Toys, I like Cuir de Russie but went on to prefer more butch leathers! Have you tried the Bandit yet, it's fairly full-on.

Leedy, if you're in town, Arnotts in Henry Street have a Guerlain counter, I always stop off for a spray if I'm passing. They have Jicky and all the other oldies to try. It's very weird - dirty lavender - and I imagine the original with all the real civet was something else!

I really, really want a full bottle of Une Fleur de Cassie and I think it might be my Christmas present to myself.

shins · 03/12/2014 13:21

Canny, I hate all the Juliette has a gun scents, to me they smell tacky and cheap but that's just subjective of course. Their sample set is really good value - about €10 if I recall - so probably a better bet than blind buying? Francis Kurkjdan created some of them and I don't like his own perfumes either so there's obviously just some kind of chemical thing going on with me and certain lines.

FrugalFashionista · 03/12/2014 14:47

SOTD Havana from Tuesdays. A fruity gourmand, too sweet for me, but the opening notes are amazingly beautiful. Misleading name, I would give this to a teen, reminds me of Pink Sugar and its fancy patisserie counterparts Gourmand Coquin and Acqua e Zucchero. It's fading now so switching to HdP Moulin Rouge.

I like some perfumes from Maison Kurkdjian and of course he has his mainstream blockbusters but Juliette Has a Gun is not for me. There is a rose scent that might be one of the most potent ones ever invented, just thinking about it hurts. I met him last year briefly at a launch and he seemed really nice and a bit shy. If Histoires de Parfums haven't changed their sample pricing they offer much more bang for the buck than Juliette.

FrugalFashionista · 03/12/2014 18:28

Loving Moulin Rouge. This is such an understated, close-to-the-skin thing, extremely pleasing yet not distracting at all.

ToysRLuv · 03/12/2014 20:21

I like Midnight Oud from the Juliette has a Gun line. I also quite like Citzen Queen. Haven't tried the others..

Canny: Got the Ninfea today. Thanks so much!! Lovely, powdery Violet, but it's also got a fresh element to it, which lends interest to it.

Shins: I have tried Bandit, as well. I think I didn't have a proper go with it, as I think I had too many things on at the same time, so couldn't really smell much. Will probably put on some tomorrow (and scare my poor clients ;) ).

I really like the smells of leather, rubber, vinyl and wax. if there was a version of Parisienne with an amplified vinyl note I'd want that in my collection, but the versions I have tried only hint at vinyl, which is not enough for me. Should probably get a Demeter Vinyl/PVC/Rubber and layer that with everything in my collection.

Fragrantica did an article about Ombre Mercure by Terri de Gunzburg, in which it was mentioned that it smelled like old-fashioned make-up, or particularly waxy lipstick, which is a smell I really like. Anyone tried it? Does it smell of lipstick?

Toys I saw Terry's line at a perfume fair (think she herself was there promoting it) but as I had already sampled dozens of 'fumes, did not try them.

Wearing Coromandel today, looking forward to the mellow afterglow.

My perfume collection is a great source of sensual pleasure on these quiet, work-filled days. Perfumes are like a door to a secret garden, they add a dimension to the day-to-day and I love the variety of experiences they can offer.

Stokey · 04/12/2014 10:54

Snap Frugal - i just got my samples through and Coromnadel is so perfect for chilly winter weather.

I like Vaara too Toomuchtea but it doesn't have great staying power on me. It could be because I only have a sample dab one rather than a spray. They do a really nice minature collection that I bought DH for his birthday.

Has anyone got Tuesdays Kiss by the Fireside? I blind bought a full bottle and want to love it, it smells of christmas, but just doesn't seeem right on my skin.

leedy · 04/12/2014 11:16

SOTD: sample of Baie Rose by Le Labo. It's a nice, peppery rose though I think I have yet to encounter a rose perfume that really does it for me. I like the smell of roses but I'm not sure how much want to smell of one, IYKWIM.

Similarly (except I quite like the Baie Rose on me, and I really was not keen on this once it was on) tried Comme Des Garcons Artek Standard, which smells of ... furniture. Possibly unsurprising given that it was a collaboration with a furniture company, and it is a pretty nice furniture smell (lots of piney wood), but still. Furniture.

niminypiminy · 04/12/2014 12:06

Stokey I have a sample of A Kiss by the Fireside, great name, but it smells really nasty on me.

SOTD Guerlain Vetiver from my new FB Smile

FrugalFashionista · 04/12/2014 13:31

Stokey I have the same problem with Tuesdays. They are too clean, shiny, bright, they smell too good. I need darkness, shadows, dirt and animal notes, my favorite perfumes are grounded in some way.

We have some Artek furniture at home so probably I associate the smell with home Wink Paradoxically Artek stuff has this characteristic that it's only valuable when you get a patina - and the new furniture smell is gone. So the sofa only really looks good whe it's semi collapsed lived in, and I have been patiently placing the chairs near windows for a decade to get the blonde birch darken to a mellow golden hue. It's not great yet but will get better and better every year, probably peaking when I die Wink Weird Nordic value systems

I studied Russian many years ago with a native teacher, Ludmila from St Petersburg. Most Scandinavian capitals are roughly on the same latitude with St Petersburg but she stubbornly believed that we are from the 'taiga and the tundra'.

canny1234 · 04/12/2014 14:44

I wasn't keen on a kiss By The Fireside as a perfume. It would make a really good candle or Room scent though.
I've just received a lovely swop from a Fragantica.La fille de Berlin ( which I adore) and a couple of Jo Malone decants. The Oud & Bergamot is a fresh office safe Oud which I actually really like. The Rain and Angelica is also pretty and easy to wear.I'm starting to see the appeal and easy wearability in this range, amidst the opprobrium of perfumistasGrin.
Toys do you think the Ninfea offers any advantage over Lipstick Rose and is worth the high price?
I Would also like to try Ombre Mercure - Love Lipstick Rose and make up smells ( though my mum used to always smell of Coal tar soap!).

ToysRLuv · 04/12/2014 20:04

Canny: I think I personally prefer Lipstick Rose to Ninfea for the slight waxiness..

SOTD: Forgot to put any one this morning, so popped into a boots and sprayed on Modern Muse, which is nice enough, but nothing very interesting. The other options available were even less so.

leedy · 05/12/2014 10:33

SOTD: sample of Olfactive Studio's Lumiere Blanche. I like it - sort of cosy, comforting milky chai tea kind of smell with cardamom and cinnamon. Not a particularly strong scent, but still "there", IYKWIM.

niminypiminy · 05/12/2014 11:33

I know what you mean, Frugal, about 4160 Tuesdays. Somehow they are too one-dimensional, too simple. The only one I have worn several times is Sunshine and Pancakes, which feels like a very uncomplicated Saturday morning kind of smell (although this may be because we often have pancakes for breakfast on Saturdays!). Pleasant and cheerful.

SOTD is Suffolk Lavendar by Shay & Blue, which is the only one of theirs I like at all -- sort of gourmand lavendar. It starts with a pig pong of melon, which I don't like at all, but that goes quickly and there's an underlying spiciness which comes through. But like all theirs that I have tried, it doesn't last, and I'll be looking for something else in an hour or so.

niminypiminy · 05/12/2014 11:33

pig = big

leedy · 05/12/2014 11:35

Yes, I find the Shay & Blue scents don't last at all either. I have a small bottle of their Blood Orange, which I do really like, bought as it was in some M&S beauty offer, and it's literally gone within an hour or two.

shins · 05/12/2014 13:56

SOTD: Horizon by Oriza L Legrand. Warm, boozy patchouli, it reminds me a lot of Chanel's Coromandel. Lovely on this chilly day. I notice they've put the price of their sample set up by a fiver though!

I was meaning to try 4160 Tuesdays but you've all put me off....my idea of hell is bright clean smelling perfumes (Estee Lauder makes me heave apart from Azuree). Hmm

FrugalFashionista · 05/12/2014 17:17

Yep I also thought of Estee Lauder with Tuesdays although they do not smell similar at all. Similar unrelenting brightness. Curious about Pancakes though and they are a must-try for anyone who likes fruit notes and gourmands.

Traveling again tomorrow so will resort to comfort smells. Vega came with two extremely beautiful purse spray vials and one of them is always in my travel makeup bag.

SOTD Nothing - feeling exhausted. A trace of Coromandel lingering on my sleeve.

OneLittleLady · 05/12/2014 17:40

Stokey I haven't tried kiss by the fireside but I want to, it intrigues me and I'd love to capture the scent of 'christmas' IYKWIM?

No perfume today as I'm struggling to really enjoy anything I've got. I don't know if I've truly gone off them or I'm just wanting things with more dimension to them now. Almost everything I have you could buy in most boots etc and I don't know, they just seem too simple now, I don't feel like they really project 'me'? probably sounds very pretentious!

OneLittleLady · 06/12/2014 19:54

I' so excited, Dp is buying me a voucher for the 4160tuesday perfume day! I havent decided which one I want to go to yet but I am so so excited, i really can't wait Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

leedy · 09/12/2014 11:15

SOTD: Sample of Serge Lutyens Five O'Clock Au Gingembre. I really like it - smells like ginger tea. Cosy.

OlfactoryFresh · 09/12/2014 11:44

Sorry canny, been off the thread for a while. Yes please, I'd love the Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily. I've ordered some decant bottles, so when they arrive I'll send you the Fig and Cassis. Do you still have my address?

leedy · 09/12/2014 14:17

Wargh, squirted myself with Lush "Jungle" perfume, which is actually very nice (same scent as their conditioner of the same name) but ferociously powerful. As the name suggests, there's a lot of green stuff and tropical flowers (ylang ylang), which is not necessarily what you want practically slapping you in the face at work. Subtle, it is not.

Suspect any future applications will involve microns of the stuff.

niminypiminy · 09/12/2014 14:50

Last night DS2 asked to try on some perfume, and chose Après l'Ondee. I squirted a little on his wrist when DS1
grabbed the bottle and sprayed it liberally over himself. Then DS2 retaliated. So they went to their boy-bedrooms deliciously violet---scentedGrin.
