Remember our chats??

Our SOTD (scent of the day)?

Is there a thread I've missed Shock

If not, lets take it up here :)

SOTD an unknown sample from my perfume drawer, woodsy and irisy, am baffled but enjoying it!

Oh, just checked. Precious Oud doesn't have rose in it! So it must have been the tuberose and jasmine combo. In fact, the tuberose might be the thing that I perceived as bubblegum (like in Heeley's Bubblegum Chic).

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2014 21:43

Secret - Boots are now carrying 'the library of fragrance' perfumes. Well, the larger boots are. Among the range is 'fresh laundry' and 'clean skin'. I think they may be a bit cool. But I don't know for sure! They are certainly very cheap and cheerful. I think the idea is that you buy a few, layer, and cudtomise. Which is a nice marketing idea!
I have to say, I would have loved to have been gifted one of the chanel exclusifs, especially Jersey, beige, l28 la Pausa (or bel respiro - but that's a 'green', rather than a linen-y scent). Heck, I'd love to be gifted one now. An utterly fabulous present.
My Boots recommendation is definitely the budget option!

Secretservice · 25/11/2014 22:28

Thank you all very much. I like the idea of the Chanel, Comme de Garçon or Artek, will investigate further to see if any are affordable, I would like to splash out a bit.
Thank you again, would not have found them without you. Smile

ToysRLuv · 25/11/2014 23:06

Standard is very arty and cool. Sort of smells of clean cedar wood and gingery citrus which comes through a bit metallic. It's sold by Comme des Garcons.

leedy · 26/11/2014 10:22

Ooh, Standard sounds like something I'd like, actually.

SOTD: sample of Atelier Cologne Ambre Nue. Nice, but a bit meh so far. Very sweet on me at the start (much like their Gold Leather, which starts off like biscuits!), now sort of generic "pleasant warm skin smell". It's not bad, like, but unless it transforms into something amazing I wouldn't be buying a FB.

OlfactoryFresh · 26/11/2014 11:04

Ooh! I've just realised I'm not mad when I say that lots of perfumes smell like tea on me. Just been browsing Fragrantica, and it turns out that's a real perfume 'thing'! Have up to this point been pleasantly baffled by this thread, but now feel less of a doofus.

Marc Jacobs Men is something that has come up on the 'reminds me of' bit relating to Phylosikos. Anyone tried that?

Realised I also have almost full bottles of Jo Malone Wild Fig & Cassis and French Lime Blossom, if anyone would like some. There are pints of Eau d'Hadrien swilling about here too, if there are any takers...

leedy · 26/11/2014 11:28

Haven't tried Marc Jacobs Men, no, but am a big fan of Philosykos (haven't worn it in a while as I literally wore it ALL THE TIME for a few years, though) - must give it a sniff.

Miller Harris Figue Amere isn't a million miles from it, though it doesn't have that coconutty/warm-gorsey thing that Philosykos has.

Fabulassie · 26/11/2014 13:21

I'm going to take a break from trying new fragrances for a little while and enjoy the ones I have. So, my SOTD is Estee Lauder Beautiful. Nothing fancy or exotic, but it's very pretty.

Yesterday I popped into HoF to see what the price is for Balenciaga Paris and while I was there I tested Balenciaga Rosabotanica. It smelled pretty in the bottle/on the card, but on my wrist it started to bug me quickly. There was something weird in there... like the unpleasant funk of water from a three-day-old vase of flowers.

shins · 26/11/2014 13:30

SOTD: Cuir de Russie by Chanel. Beautiful, opulent, luxurious and old-fashioned. I think you can't go wrong with those Exclusifs.

canny1234 · 26/11/2014 14:01

Toys will do!
Can you send me some vials as a swop?Grin
Olfactory I would be happy to swop some of the Fig and Cassis for a decant of any of mine.I have some Womanity by Thierry Mugler ( a salty sweet fig) that you might be interested in trying plus some others.Glad to know that you've received your perfume package so quickly.I think I sprayed it with Jo Malone Dark Amber and ginger lily ( but I'm not 100% on that).
Does anyone have any Malle samples they would like to swop?I love Lipstick rose and Carnal flower and would love to try some more in this range ( without ordering more expensive decants on Fragantica).
Sotd is Champs Elysees - I am in an introspective lilac mood today.

FrugalFashionista · 26/11/2014 14:45

OF lots of modern chypres have a basenote that smells like cold tea. I think Coco Mademoiselle is one of them. And then there are many perfumes that intentionally build in a tea note.

Wearing an old school chypre today. Y extrait, the box has a number 82 which could be very well the year it was manufactured as the box is faded and charming and has a leaflet of retro looking ancillary products (talc, bubble bath...) and a certificate in French: 'if not happy, return this flacon to address XXX'. Most certainly not returning mine...

leedy · 26/11/2014 14:46

Rosabotanica didn't work on me either, I thought I'd love it given the description but it wasn't particularly nice on.

OlfactoryFresh · 26/11/2014 17:02

Right canny, I'll send some over. I posted your other package this afternoon. Give me a tick to get some empty bottles ordered. Could I try some of the Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily one? I should send you the card back for a sniff! Grin Do you have any of C des G Standard mentioned upthread? That sounded lovely.

My favourite of the ones you sent me is the Heeley Figuier. Different to Philosykos but just as lovely. Have ordered a sample of the Heeley Vetiver. Interestingly, the Artisan Parfumeur one that is also fig based now smells like Pledge and dusters on my arm. Grin

OneLittleLady · 26/11/2014 17:13

Still searching for my perfect vanilla. I just can't find 'the one, you know? a lot of whats on offer is too gourmand or too sweet in general. Maybe i need to try looking for something else, perhaps something with incense, something oriental. I don't know.

OK, Canny, will send some vials your way!

I used to have a sample vial of Standard, but I think I gave to Frugal, as it wasn't my kind of thing. To me it smelled like wooden furniture with metal components, but I think it might have also appeared like that, because I know it's designed by a furniture making company...

canny1234 · 26/11/2014 21:59

I really like the Heeleys Figuier as well.I love the fact it has Rhubarb in it like Heeleys Verveine ( which I adore).Ordering samples off the Heeleys website is pretty reasonable as well.I really want to try the L'amandiere perfume with almonds and linden blossom - one of my favourite notes ( I already have jo Malones French lime blossom).

Thank you Toys.A womb I don't have any Standard.Nose ( the French perfume online business) have lots of Comme des Garcons but not Standard sadly.Sure can send you some Amber and Ginger Lily - I have a 100 ml bottle that I'm never going to use up.

Frugal I love to hear about the perfumes you wear as they seem so sophisticated.I really don't suit these types of perfumes even though I'm really not young anymore ( have young kids though).I still love girly florals mostly even though my tastes are becoming slightly more developed with experience.

Fabulassie · 26/11/2014 22:40

Can anyone tell me a perfume that smells like church incense? (Frankincense and myrrh)?

leedy · 26/11/2014 22:52

Miller Harris La Fumee smells like Mass, so that's possibly one to try.

niminypiminy · 26/11/2014 23:11

canny L'Amandiere is gorgeous. By coincidence I've been wearing it today. It makes me think of mediterranean spring - starting cool and warming up - and was just the thing for a dank, grey autumn day with 15 hours of work in it.

ToysRLuv · 26/11/2014 23:16

The CdG Incense series in very good.

ToysRLuv · 26/11/2014 23:46

OLL: I feel for you, but don't know if I can help! Have you ever tried Jaisalmer? To me it is really a beautifully smooth incense oriental, which does feel spicy and balmy, but also quite light. Not stuffy or heavy, or to sweet..

OneLittleLady · 27/11/2014 00:12

toys i haven't heard of that one, I will have to try and hunt down a sample, i know i wouldn't be able to find it in this town (nothing but the popular fruity stuff here for the most part, boots, fragrance shop and debenhams is about it) but it does sound interesting

FrugalFashionista · 27/11/2014 06:11

Fabulassie, Avignon by CdG and Messe de Minuit are the ultimate church incense perfumes. If you are Orthodox, try Zagorsk.

Canny people tend go through phases of discovery when they learn about perfume. I like many different types of perfume but have really started enjoying the classics. Also loving the contrasts - it's rainy even in Rome and and I'm writing intensely, lounging in high-tops and ripped boyfriends and a soft white fisherman sweater - an extremely tailored classic floral chypre is the extreme in terms of contrast. Y is so very happy and sunny too. Trying not to buy any new perfumes but every time I go through a duty free or a department store I gravitate towards Chanel No. 5 extrait so perhaps I should just get it. In spring, I'll probably be wearing violets and translucent florals once again...

If you do not know Philip Kraft's FB page yet (my iPad has a bug and cannot paste links - so here is a route - google Philip Kraft Facebook Scent, pick Bois de Jasmin, the link is in her comment box), it's well worth visiting. He is a perfume chemist who discovers and synthetizes new raw materials. If he wants to know what a newly launched perfume is made of, he just puts it through his gas chromatograph. He discusses new launches and has probably the most interesting insights and tidbits. Kind of like Breaking Bad but no dead bodies... However, if you prefer to believe that perfumes are made of dewy rose petals, unicorn tears and pixie dust, don't go there, as he will shatter those illusions. One surprising natural is his favorite - orange oil, the byproduct from lemonade and juice industry...

Fabulassie · 27/11/2014 07:25

Thanks! I will try to hunt these scents down.
