Remember our chats??

Our SOTD (scent of the day)?

Is there a thread I've missed Shock

If not, lets take it up here :)

SOTD an unknown sample from my perfume drawer, woodsy and irisy, am baffled but enjoying it!

OP posts:
niminypiminy · 24/11/2014 21:04

It's amazing how personal one's reaction to scent is. I absolutely hated lipstick rose, I thought I would like it as I love violet, but after about five minutes it smelled really unpleasant to me. I gave away my sample knowing I would never wear it again. I don't really like Eau d'Hiver either, to me there's something insipid about it. It's not the subtlety that bothers me, it's the unvarying bland sweetness of it.

But I might change my mind. I used to think I hated vetiver. Today on impulse as I was passing by the Guerlain counter in Johnny Loulou's I put a squirt of Vetiver on my wrist. Oh, love at first sniff! From the first bitter citrus of the opening through to the cool woodiness of its heart, I was utterly smitten. I may have to buy a FB (and I hardly ever do that). 'Fallink in lov again, never vanted to, but what am I to do, I can't help it".

Fabulassie · 24/11/2014 22:47

I think I'm getting closer and closer to buying L'Heure Bleue.

canny1234 · 25/11/2014 10:23

I love l'heure bleue too Fabulassie.
SOTD is again Lipstick Rose.I spritzed 3 times this morning and now I can barely smell it on me.I was expecting monster silage and longevity with this.Paris lasts longer on,whereas this is obviously higher quality and just blends in with my body chemistry. But I do expect to smell it on myself after a couple of hours.

Toys I have ordered some Profumum Roma's Ninfea off eBay.I know this is one you wanted to try. This is meant to be the Holy Grail of Violet scents.Let's see whether it delivers!

Niminypiminy I think Vetiver is lovely in Autumn.I Iove the 'vinegariness' of Bal d'afrique in cooler weather.Sometimes preferences just change though.I used to dislike Gourmands until Toys sent me a sample of Profumum Roma's Battito d'ali. Now I often smell like a scented orangeblossom pastry.

Frugal thank you!I think one of my disliked ingredients might be Galbanam. Also pine might smell a little pungent on.

leedy · 25/11/2014 10:31

SOTD: Atelier Cologne's Gold Leather. Nice, I think, though don't think I'd do a FB. Very multiphasic - it currently smells like a warm, slightly sweet, woody leather but at the beginning it smells exactly (and weirdly) like Mikado biscuits. There's apparently plum in there so perhaps I think I'm smelling jam....

FrugalFashionista · 25/11/2014 10:40

Canny, Galbanum smells a bit like mushed tinned peas, it is the top note in Chanel No 19 EDP. We seem to like opposite things, I love galbanum. I like violets in some context and adore violet leaf, but the classic violet rose is a difficult duo for me.

Today channeling a smooth gentleman vibe wearing Opus 1870.
Love the exquisite opening, but the basenote is is a neverending hum of synth cedar = Iso E Super, less thrilled about that.

SpanielofDoom · 25/11/2014 10:44

New to the perfume threads, not sure how I've missed them in the past. Will try to fully catch up on this one later today as I've only read a few posts so far.

I'm wearing Cristalle (EDP, EDT is horrid on me) today.

I love Coromandel, mentioned upthread. I've never bought a full bottle though, just had a couple of sample vials over the years. I think I need to treat myself!
I've also enjoyed many of the Serge Lutens several years ago, although I found a strong cumin note in several that didn't suit me at all.

I'm on the hunt for a signature fragrance so I'll enjoy this thread.

Fabulassie · 25/11/2014 12:05

SOTD is Balenciaga Paris. It was one of the samples given to me at HoF last week. I sprayed it on before bed and am wearing it again today. I do think I like it. It's subtle and feminine and not insipid or overly sweet. I don't know anything about notes so I had to look it up:

"Balenciaga Paris is not a romantic floral fragrance, but created with a dose of the urban and the traditional with nuances of metal effects. Its composition is characterized as a chypre floral with accentuated violet. The effect it leaves is not powdery as it usually does in other compositions, but violet leaves are put in the front plan so the fragrance receives light, fresh and natural nuances. Olivier Polge integrates redistilled wood such as cedar and patchouli. Floral essences are represented by carnation and violet."

niminypiminy · 25/11/2014 12:13

My SOTD, inspired by the thought of Marlene Dietrich, is Robert Piguet Bandit, Dietrich's signature scent. Ballsy, yet still (just) feminine leather. Think it goes quite well with my cropped bleached hair, stompy boots, silver sweater, red lipstick look today.

ToysRLuv · 25/11/2014 13:03

Canny, I'd love to try some Ninfea!!! How much, and shall we swap or? PM me!

SOTD: Nothing yet. Shall pop to a department store later, so will douse myself with VCaA Precious Oud (lovely) or something else that takes my fancy..

Spaniel: I think I know what you mean about the Lutens'. I literally can't stand Ambre Sultan, which is pretty much meant to be a staple oriental.. To me it's smells like someone who's had three types of curry.

Fabulassie: I quite like Balenciaga. But it's not FB worthy for me.

shins · 25/11/2014 13:26

SOTD: Chergui by Lutens. Lovely warm oriental. The name reminds me of Shergar, a famous racehorse that was kidnapped in Ireland 30 years ago and it goes with the hay notes.

leedy, the Atelier Colognes I'm finding a bit anaemic, I think they're probably more summer wear.

Niminy, I love Bandit but most people around me hate it! Still wear it though.

Toys, posting your decants today!

ToysRLuv · 25/11/2014 13:39

Love it... Shergar! I saw a documentary about him not too long ago. I really like the smell of a stable. And the leather in saddles and bridles. Too bad I can't go riding at all these days. Lack of money and car..

OlfactoryFresh · 25/11/2014 13:40

Where do you all find these amazing scents? I live about 15 miles from a House of Fraser, and otherwise it's the airport for me.

I'm in London next week, any tips for where I could go for a squirt? Too skint to actually buy anything!

leedy · 25/11/2014 13:44

Can't think I'd like to smell of Shergar....

shins, I've only tried a couple and yes, I can see a lot of them being more yer fresh summer hint of cologne type thing. The Gold Leather one I have on today is oomphy enough, mind (even with the aforementioned opening smell of biscuits...).

canny1234 · 25/11/2014 13:56

Toys I've only ordered 5 mls to see if I like it( i should have ordered 10 mls and then split with you but i didn't think - sorry!)There's an eBay seller that sells several Profumum Roma decants ( but Ninfea isn't one of them).I messaged her and she said she had some Ninfea available.I think its around £16 for 5 mls or thereabouts ( as postage is really expensive). My Battito d'ali decant from her is pristine though,so I thought it was worth a punt.

Shins I remember when Shergar disappeared!
The Atelier colognes are definitely warm weather scents apart from Mistral Patchouli which has a bit more warmth.

Secretservice · 25/11/2014 13:57

Afternoon all you fragrant beings
I'm a complete know-nothing when it comes to perfumes, but my DD has asked for a bottle for Christmas. She wants something linen-y, I suspect more hemp smelling than washed cotton. My bit of research suggest White Linen or Philosophy Amazing Grace, but I wonder if these will be a bit too old for her, she's 21 and a fashion student, so something young and 'hip' is needed.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Fabulassie · 25/11/2014 14:32

There's also The Library of Fragrance, at Boots. They have something along the lines of "Fresh Laundry." Give that a sniff. It costs £15, so reasonable.

niminypiminy · 25/11/2014 14:47

awombwithoutafoof you can get samples of perfumes - very small bottles mostly 2 or 3 mls from various places. I use Les Senteurs (based in Mayfair and a wonderful place to visit), Scent and sensibility (online), Nose (in Paris but also online), there are others as well. Samples are a great and cheap way to try things. Sometimes scent counters will give away samples. Libery has a great selection of perfumes as do Harvey Nicks and Horrids (used to have a friend that worked there), Selfridges and the like. Some of the perfume houses, especially niche ones, will sell you samples direct - 1460 Tuesdays (another good place to visit) for example.

Housewife2010 · 25/11/2014 14:49

Secret What about www.beautybay.com/bathbody/clean/warmcottonrollerballeaudeparfum/ ?

Housewife2010 · 25/11/2014 14:50

awombwithoutafoof I've ordered from www.surrendertochance.com. A US site but if you sign up they'll email you offers.

Housewife2010 · 25/11/2014 14:53

SOTD Diptyque Eau Duelle. It doesn't seem to last though. I have lots of Diptyque but I'm not that impressed with this one so far. My others seem to last longer.

FrugalFashionista · 25/11/2014 17:02

Secret you already got the budget alternatives (lots of 20sths seem obsessed with Clean scents, probaly a safe choice). Linen usually means white musks. Guerlain has Eau de Lingerie. For me, the ultimate linen scet is a good cool iris, 28 La Pausa in particular. A twentysomething would adore Beige by Chanel. Both very pricey. The Fashion-forward alternative would be anything by Byredo (fashionistas have discovered this brand), also very pricey. A budget alternative that has still some Swedish stret cred would be Rue de Varenne from Emma S. (smells of laundry musks). J Crew has two relatively affordable perfumes by Arquiste, Arquiste is a cool niche house but J Crew may be too preppy for an art student. Comme des Garcons has some great unisex perfumes that are also seriously cool, I would consider Artek Standard - they are not mega expensive. Zagorsk is their take on iris.

FrugalFashionista · 25/11/2014 17:06

Oh and for a hemp-inspired perfume, google Black Afgano by Nasomatto.

Lonelynessie · 25/11/2014 17:32

Quick question for you all....

My favorite perfume ever is 'Issey Miyake l'eau d'issey'. I also quite like 'Lady Million'. I really don't like flowery (like roses) or sweet scents. What other perfumes would you suggest?

ToysRLuv · 25/11/2014 18:53

Lonely: It's hard to say.. I think your best bet is to go to a well stocked shop and just try different things and get a better idea of what kinds of things you like, as those two you mentioned are quite different in style. However, maybe you could check out Chanel Chance, YSL Cinema, or Hermes' Jardin Series?

ToysRLuv · 25/11/2014 20:11

Canny: Aww.. Nevermind. If I send you a small vial, could you spray a bit of Ninfea in it, so I can test it, at least? If that's ok, what do would you like in return?

So, tested White Patchouli. An ok patchouli, but literally nearly gone in half an hour.

Also sprayed on Precious Oud. It's quite oudy when you spray it and quickly settles to a rose bubblegum oud. The drydown is a lovely spicy sweet light oud with less of the bubble gum. Not sure if the name is right though.
