What stops you showering every day?

I hate showering!

I find any excuse to avoid showering as soon as I get up. Things like I'm doing housework or gardening and I'll shower later are my usual excuses.

I'm not sure what would make me want to shower first thing, I just like getting on with my day.

I'm not a public health hazard, I do wash - just can't be arsed to shower every day.

The only thing that stops me having a shower every day is not having a working shower. The one at our old house broke when the children were small and we couldn't afford to get a new one fitted for a couple of years. That was horrible, and I don't enjoy baths anymore.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 03/10/2014 08:59

The time it takes to dry my hair afterwards
I feel very vulnerable standing naked in a shower
I hate how I look so try not to be naked much
We didn't have a shower growing up and I had one or two baths a week. I never got into a routine of doing it everyday.

BellaVita · 03/10/2014 09:18

Nothing stops me showering every day. I like to feel clean especially before work. I sometimes have two showers (morning and evening) or a shower and a bath.

Magpiemystery · 03/10/2014 10:27

Moonin you just need to get up a bit earlier.

We have one bathroom and I have to get a 10 month old and 4 year old up dressed, fed and dressed and out the house by. 8:05 for the school run. Dh and I both manage to have a shower. I get up at 6 to get everything done.

Sorry but washing every other day is rank

frogmore6 · 03/10/2014 11:08

re:headlice- I really had no idea.

Megbeth · 03/10/2014 15:58

I shower every morning so does DH. We'll both shower later if we exercise. We are totally against just washing at night.
I wondered how bath/shower at night people managed the next day especially after MR. You'd have to use a baby wipe or flannel 'down there' but surely it's easier to get in the shower. I can't understand how someone could not wash the next day after MR. You would stink. I couldn't wash every other day I'd feel so dirty.

miaowmix · 03/10/2014 16:09

I shower every morning and have another one (or bath) every night. If I do exercise/sport I have another shower after that. On holiday in hot countries I will sometimes have 3 or 4 (cold) showers a day.
Only no water would prevent me from showering.

This thread is making me feel itchy, I now can't wait to leave work, get home and have a shower.
Some people are just grim.

pinkfrocks · 03/10/2014 17:03

It makes me understand now why public transport and anywhere that the public congregates often smells. I understand why it's not always possible to shower or bath 2 x a day in a shared house maybe but going for 2 days and not bathing the kids often?

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 17:52

actually i cant believe how many obsessed clean freaks there are on here!!! No wonder we have little immunity to germs!!! Honestly. I can totally understand those that excercise. I would shower after that but twice a day ffs!!! How dirty can one get. Anyone will tell you that that amount of showering bathing is NOT good for the skin.

Its not like i said i got washed once a month for goodness sake. I said every other day!!!

SofaCanary · 03/10/2014 18:02

My eczema flares up if I shower/bathe too often - twice a day for me would be too much.

OneLittleLady · 03/10/2014 18:08

pain and mobility issues. I have never suffered with fishy fanny through lack of daily showering, if you have a fishy fanny, get checked for BV as it isnt normal Wink

pinkfrocks · 03/10/2014 18:39

GGP if you read the feature carefully there is not one direct quote from a dermatologist, only a passing reference to them. The 2 'experts' quoted are a sociologist and a Prof of Virology. You will see that the Prof reminds people to wash their hands more often and also pay regular attention to areas 'below the belt'. I'm not sure how people who shower every other day or allow their child a bath once a week attend to areas below the belt. I'm not sure either why looking back to what was the norm when people worked in the fields or in heavy industry and homes didn't have adequate washing facilities is a model to aspire to nowadays.

pinkfrocks · 03/10/2014 18:40

Oh and one more thought- it's perfectly possible to have lovely skin if you bath/shower often and use body lotion. I'm more worried about the over use of antibiotics for colds and coughs and the effect these have on virus mutation than the over-use of water in a shower.

Oh and a bbc article about showering said:

Dr Owen, who produced "eco action trump" cards to help people understand the environmental and economic impact of everyday activities, said that she recommended that people took four-minute showers.

"Unfortunately it seems that message is not getting through," she said.

"The results here show that the average time spent in a shower is double that. This wastes not only water, but also the energy needed for heating the water too.

"People always consider the running costs of cars and phones, but no-one considers the running costs of everyday appliances such as showers, washing machines and TVs."

The survey suggested that taking eight-minutes showers would cost an average UK family £416 a year; using a power shower would see the annual bill soar to £918.

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 19:16

Again though, each to their own...but i think the argument for showering every other day wins the day.

frogmore6 · 03/10/2014 19:31

Consider what's going to get and remain dirty if you never shower. The average human body is covered by about 20 square feet (2 square meters) of skin containing about 2.6 million sweat glands. In addition to sweat glands, your skin houses thousands of tiny hairs.

You are constantly sweating, even though you may not notice it. There are two kinds of sweat glands all over your body -- eccrine and apocrine. The sweat from apocrine glands contains proteins and fatty acids, which make it thick and give it a milky or yellowish color. This is why underarm stains in clothing appear yellowish. It turns out that sweat itself has no odor. Then why, you may ask, is a sweaty person so smelly? When the bacteria on your skin and hair metabolize the proteins and fatty acids, they produce an unpleasant odor.

FurryDogMother · 03/10/2014 19:35

We don't have a shower. That more or less does it for me.

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 19:42

Nope..im not getting the showering twice a day thing [unless you have been exercising] sorry.
Its not good for your skin.
Its not good for the environment.
Its not good for your purse.
Justifies it to me.

Its all natural anyway. You are meant to sweat. It is your body acting appropriately.

Clackety · 03/10/2014 19:43

Sorry to reduce this to a domestic issue but after a shower I have to squeege the glass as I live in a hard water area.. This definitely contributes to any reticence.

If I could just shower and go I'd be in there twice a day every day!

OP posts:
Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 19:47

..and clackety, thanks for that...
you have to clean your shower more often!

Magpiemystery · 03/10/2014 19:48

If you only shower every other day do you wash at the sink on the days you don't shower?
Or do you just spray a but of deodrant and hope for the best?

Can't believe washing kids so infrequently, I bet the go to school in grubby uniform too!

pinkfrocks · 03/10/2014 20:01

GGP- you do what you like- your body- but spare a thought for your kids. I'd still like to know if you wash your pits and bits daily!

Having a bath once a week is pretty downright awful. I used to work with children and I think have already said that the smelly ones stood out a mile. Often their clothes smelled too because they weren't washed very often.

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 20:37

I work with kids daily. I dont smell anyone unless they have pooped their pants!! [sadly i have had that in class] I work with infants too...not the most hygenic i have to say. I have been teaching for 10 years and also in terribly deprived areas where it is clear when a child is neglected...its more than being unwashed.

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 20:38

..oh and yes i always wash my pits daily but maybe not my bits lol!!! far too cold for that now!
