I know this has been done before and posters have got flamed but I'd really like some suggestions.

I'll go over the budget if its something I really like, but not wildly so.

I probably looking for more of a tote style rather than clutch.
Thanks.

I think I might need to try harder with my shoes. I fondly remember a time when I wore lovely shoes and not just flats.

Lovely bags linked.

LEMmingaround · 23/08/2014 19:12

Well i looked in TKmax and really didn't like the bags in there at all. Then went to fenwick but only liked the mulberrys and radley bags, mulberry is lottery prices and radley was over budget! So took myself off to accessorise, the leather wannabies were shit, as were the ones in fenwick - ended up selling my soul to the devil that is Cath Kidstone and blowing £68 on a satchel. Not leather, but not trying to be leather either and i love it. Despite actually hating Cath Kidstone with a vengance Hmm Feeling very spoilt just now.

I genuinely don't understand why anyone would want to spend £900 on a bag, but thats probably because that is a serious amount of money to me and something that would have to be saved up for and even then i couldn't justify it - in MY budget. If anyone else has the money to spend on a bag, bloody good luck to them is what i say. I am envious that someone could afford it, im sure i could find something equally unnecessary to spunk my £900, just not a bag.

santamarianovella · 23/08/2014 19:28

mrskoala for day shoes I wear marant, Chloe, lanvin flats ..etc I love nice shoes, have had some for so long, close to 8 years now,

I bet your caravan is awesome downstairs

I really like nice bags, I don't think this qualifies as a crime,if I buy a bag it's from our disposable income, I don't buy a bag very often, I think the last time I bought one was when I had dd, 3 years ago, I did receive two celine bags and two chanels as birthday/Christmas presents lately, but that's it, I don't want any for some time now, very happy with what I have, and will keep admiring other bags, I might be vain to some but I know I'm not hurting anyone or causing anyone pain or what ever,

My mum is the most sensable person I know when if comes to spending or buying expensive items , but even she has a very nice collection of bags: Hermes, Chanel ,loro piana among others, not huge about 6,the last time she bought a bag was back in 09, they all look so good, brand new, she just wants an Hermes bolide bag , but not now maybe in a few years, I admire her approach , she knows buying second best won't do, so saving and getting the bag she likes makes her happy,
I know someone who loves gardening, spent a huge fortune , really huge on gardening gear, it's not my place to judge, it makes them so happy, and that's all that matters.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/08/2014 19:56

I don't know anything about bags TBH.
I care not a jot what someone pays for their bag.
I own 4 (well three-and-a-half really. 2 Kipling, an M&S and a re-inforced tiny baglet for on the train)

The bags on here, I wouldn't recognise TBH if I saw one, I would only recognise a LV , a Radley or a Lulu Guinness and that's only because of the logo on them (and the LG are very plastic looking. Leather prices for plastic looks )

MrsKoala · 23/08/2014 20:10

At the moment we have no storage space for anything nice. But soon we will be moving and then spending a few years where all our disposable income will be doing up our house. But once that is done, and i have storage of my own, i think i will be investing in a nice bag (and possibly one every 3-4 years if i want a few of varying styles and colours). I would much rather have a few items that i love and i feel are quality, than anything more disposable. I have a nice watch which i was left by my grandmother. A few nice pairs of shoes (nothing too fancy Russell and Bromley and Jones). I also have started buying only one or 2 items of clothing a year which really fits and looks lovely but more importantly is practical and fits with my lifestyle (last year i bought a Diane Von Furstenberg dress which goes with everything. 2 years ago i bought a northface arctic parka). I am actually spending much less than i used to and i also am starting to really look after things - getting shoes mended and get dh to polish them, clothes tailored, coats dry cleaned, my watch serviced etc. I am also slowly building up a nice jewellery collection. I buy in sales when i see things so have 2-3 lovely pieces now

I appreciate that i am very lucky to be in a position to do this. But i have spent years being skint and wearing plastic shoezone shoes. i still stick to a budget of £50 spends a wk. My DH is the same and spends a lot on his clothes, and buys quality suits/shirts/ties/shoes and we really look after them. So i don't see why i should buy any differently.

I would much rather have fewer things which i love (and fit - i'm awkward sizing) than spend exactly the same one loads of things i feel meh about.

I studied at London College of Fashion, and then did history of art and design at uni. I love the design aspect of bags and shoes (don't have to be expensive but quality materials are important for good design) and hats for some reason.

I love this quote from William Morris and i try to apply it to most things if i can. “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful"

Great post MrsKoala.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 23/08/2014 21:03

Yes and Baby's too. Love the William Morris quote.

BrandyAlexander · 23/08/2014 21:42

Two posts have made me snort with laughter. The lovely one about buying a caravan as a luxury. I am not outdoorsy at all so i laughed at the thought of me doing thatGrin. then the one about being vacuos. who new my love of handbags defines me?!

santamarianovella · 23/08/2014 22:09

baby you can be a very powerful career woman and still wear a nice bag, just look at Christine lagarde, she is chief of the IMF, one of the most serious careers in the world, she is always beautifully dressed in Chanel or Dior, i seriously doubt she had to tone down her love of Dior bags in order to be taken seriously, work and appreciation or owning of lovely bags or clothes are two completely different things,

Viviennemary · 23/08/2014 22:12

I just can't see the point of spending so much money on a bag. I'm not saying people shouldn't if that's what they want. But I am open to being convinced that any bag could be worth that much so I will click on some links.

Karbea · 23/08/2014 22:12

I'd go for this or this.

raspberryslush · 23/08/2014 22:18

'But this is the point isn't it that we all prioritise - IMO and I am being ABSOLUTELY serious, any money spent on fags or pets is absolutely obscene.'
by babybarrister

I think you have missed the point I was trying to make earlier. It isn't usually about priorities. Some people just don't have 900 quid to spend on a designer bag. It is v unfair of you to make assumptions about other people's habits, just as it would be unfair for anyone else to assume that your children are deprived of clothes/ food so that you can pay for bags.

I don't have pets, have never smoked and we spend maybe 150 pa max on alcohol and I still cannot afford to spend this amount of money on a bag at the moment. I earn a fairly average salary and it goes on essentials and things for the children. Most people in this country are in the same or a worse position than I am.
I am not a pet lover myself but I can see how much joy they bring to some people (particularly the elderly and isolated) and it seems v unfair to remark that it is 'obscene' to spend money on pets.

greengardenpixie-I don't know why you need to be so sanctimonious. No need to come on this thread if you find the concept so offensive.

People with lots of disposable income are surely free to spend it on designer bags/ clothes/ 1.8 million houses, v expensive holidays or whatever they fancy. I don't find it at all offensive and would v likely do the same if I could.

I love the William Morris quote from mrskoala (love WM too). I love beautiful things and get real pleasure from them too.

OP- I hope you find a bag you love.

raspberryslush · 23/08/2014 22:21

I suspect that professional in certain sectors are expected to spend a lot on clothes/ bags to present a certain image to their clients. It doesn't make them vacuous.

AlpacaPicnic · 23/08/2014 22:30

Woah.... Who knew that bags could be so controversial?!

I would never allow myself to own a pricy bag because I would spill something on it, or break the strap, or leave it in a puddle... But I spend easily that much money on my hobby every year and that gives me enormous pleasure.
Op, I hope you find a beautiful bag.

Smitten1981 · 23/08/2014 22:33

I have an Alexa which I love and have used to death for the past two years BUT I found an amazing bag in the M&S sale yesterday and I love that more now! But if you want a classic that goes with everything and is practical you can't go wrong with an Alexa in my opinion.

ThisBitchIsResting · 23/08/2014 22:33

Someone mentioned Marc Jacobs - I am a huge fan of the MBMJ bags and think they are really good value for money, usually lovely leather and sturdy, modern designs. The logoed lining in the classic Q range isn't for everyone but it doesn't bother me. It's less than OP wants to spend but I really like this and you couldn't go wrong with a Francesca tote or a Hillier Hobo . The MBMJ line apparently makes the vast majority of income for the MJ brand - really interesting interview in Sept Vogue.

LEMmingaround · 23/08/2014 22:46

This thread is like the property porn thread for me, i can't afford anything on it, some of the bags are lovely some of them just make my face go Hmm

i give you £850!!!

LEMmingaround · 23/08/2014 22:50

actually i would think you were a cunt if you had this bag. 11k Shock

MrsKoala · 23/08/2014 22:59

I dislike both of those LEM and wouldn't pay £10 for either.

Personally i dislike black bags full stop (well black anything really). The only ones which are just about acceptable to me are tiny evening clutch type ones for very very dressy events.

I'm still coveting the oxblood tessie hobo. It seems beautiful AND practical. Are there any sales for these posh bags? Or do they hold their retail value for a while?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/08/2014 23:15

LEM the 11k one is real crocodile ? Sad Angry
Just why?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/08/2014 23:20

There was a Lulu Guinness clutch on QVC that was shaped like a lipstick Confused (it's £350 on the website)
It looked like a flask or a dildo TBH.

It's a bit Emperors New Clothes these novelty bags "Oh, aren;t I ironic" but actually the designer is taking the piss and these people are paying to have the piss taken (like the Digestive Biscuit Bag)

honeycrest · 23/08/2014 23:26

I'm not sure if it's the sort of style you're looking for but I love my LV neverfull. It's so practical I've ended up using it nearly everyday since I got it. The sides can be cinched in to change the shape. It's a classic!

babyb- the fact that people prioritise their spending is obvious and is a point that doesn't need to be made. The fact that you made in conjunction with remarks such as people who 'don't like to spend 900 on a bag' and 'how many of you smoke, have pets, etc, etc' does have entirely different implications to just making the first statement. Perhaps you should re read and see how it might come across.

Anyway, I am bowing out now as little point going around in circles.

I hope the OP enjoys her new bag.
