I know this has been done before and posters have got flamed but I'd really like some suggestions.

I'll go over the budget if its something I really like, but not wildly so.

I probably looking for more of a tote style rather than clutch.
Thanks.

What should people who have this sort of disposable income do with their cash? Not spend it? Or spend it, thus supporting industries, supporting employment, helping the economy, and paying the government VAT? Is it that they just shouldn't spend e.g. £1000 on anything on the grounds that spending £1000 on a non-essential is 'obscene'. Or is it that they should spend their £1000, but they should buy 200 £50 bags on the grounds that each of these purchases, when taken individually, is 'reasonable'?

(Disclaimer: I have no problem with people spending whatever they like on whatever they want, provided it is within their means. I deplore 'bargain', disposable items that are produced in appalling circumstances and arguably keep their producers in poverty. I fully support the ultra-rich buying haute couture, as I see fashion and its expression within haute couture as an art form and one which provides employment to a highly skilled workforce.)

MrsK - I rate Jigsaw and Hobbs bags so worth looking in there. Or just keep saving up for the tessie - I bet it ends up in the sales with 25-30% off.

MrsKoala · 24/08/2014 13:22

I have £300 in my pot so far, so could get the tessie at xmas. Is that when the sales are?

MrsDavidBowie · 24/08/2014 13:23

I bought a Jigsaw bag last winter and its lovely. Soft leather, wearing well...about £175.
Will last for years.

What I don't understand very well is that someone upthread said something along the lines of shrivelling in the corner with her not so expensive bag. Why feel this way? We are talking about things we like, and sometimes they are expensive and sometimes they are not so much. I just met a friend for lunch who was wearing a fabulous bag from Primark, and I told her so. I sometimes like affordable things and sometimes expensive ones. If I fall in love with an expensive item, I cut corners and save until I can afford it.

There is a bag I've been in love with for the past five years. I'm saving up for it, and it's going to take me at least another couple of years. My husband thinks I'm bonkers for wanting to spend that kind of money on a bag, but we both award ourselves "play money" from the shared budget to spend on whatever we want without having to justify it to the other. One day I will have this bag and as it is a thing of utter beauty (in my eyes), the money will be well spent, since we haven't stopped paying the mortgage or buying food for it.

lurkingaround · 24/08/2014 13:39

I really don't want to get involved in this (says she, posting) as I'm not really a bag person, but I'm quite taken aback, as always on these threads, at the amount of upset people. I've seen many other things linked here, high end clothing, jewelry etc. and no one says anything. Mention a bag, and all hell breaks loose. It is quite remarkable.

I don't give a fig how people spend their own money. My BIL has just bought a Jag. I think he's crazy, it's a waste, etc., but so what. He's happy and I wish him well with it. (And, I bet, if he posted here he wouldn't get half the amount of vitriol expressed on this thread). A bag of £900 is a fraction of the cost of a Jag and yet the response here is almost childish. I do not think anyone should justify their spending, except to themselves.

Have fun choosing your bag OP, and enjoy whatever you choose.

LadyRubyPenhaligon · 24/08/2014 13:42

From this thread so far I like the navi pashli although think silver hardware would be better.
Mrs CB a navy reissue is also on my list but always something more immediate to divert my funds.
I love bags and shoes and clothes. I don't feel bad about spending my money on them and I don't feel the need to have obvious logo bags to announce what I've spent. I buy them for my own enjoyment and clicked and read this thread because of that. I also hoped it would be 200+ suggestions for lovely bags but alas it has descended into the usual bunfight.

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/08/2014 13:48

There most definitely something about bags that make people go crazy on here.

Ladyruby - I know re. diversion of funds - if only one didn't have to clothe and feed the children Wink

Koala - pre-sales start end of nov/beginning of december - matches etc do 30% off but you need to a customer. General sales will be sometime in December. Are you the same Koala of the Canada/lululemon thread?

MrsKoala · 24/08/2014 13:51

Grin yes i am.

Thanks for the tips. I am only a previous customer of Harvey Nicks so often get invited to sale things from there - do they do good bag sales?

cardamomginger · 24/08/2014 14:03

Would be interesting to see if anyone got in a tizzy about benches, when it is perfectly possible to buy a cheap plastic outdoors chair from Ikea. Wink

MrsKoala · 24/08/2014 14:07

oohhh i really like this Marc Jacobs one . I love the colour and it goes across the body.

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/08/2014 14:11

Oh yes, I got my marcie in the HN pre-sale.

madammecholet · 24/08/2014 14:18

Seriously, the OP was asking for advice, not a flaming, yawn.

Anyone else think the new Mulberry tessie £695 looks like the P&M Mariella £205 which has been around for years? Or is it just me as I own one!

Also seen a Chloe Marcie on Brand Alley today for £299 in coral if anyone interested... (sits on credit card)

MrsKoala · 24/08/2014 14:32

How funny, i love the Tessie but dislike the Marielle.

santamarianovella · 24/08/2014 14:36

All the best of luck koala , hope everything goes ok,
Mulberry do great sales, also, if you like the maxi or Gracie bags ,they appear often on the outnet for like %40-%50 less,

I really like the tessie too, and have seen it a couple of times in selfridges, I wish they make it in british racing green , it would look stunning, I think mulberry quality is pretty good, they had a couple of bad years, but they are trying so hard to amend things, and so far its working, and to be honest I'd rather get a mulberry tessie or Lilly, than other bags in that price bracket £500-800,

While I have said I'm not a bag person, I love love love Bottega Veneta.

LadyRubyPenhaligon · 24/08/2014 15:16

I do love BV, great tip re HN thanks.

bigkidsdidit · 24/08/2014 17:27

God that bottega Veneta is gorgeous. And coincidentally the exact amount - to the £ - I spend on nursery fees every month. That's going on my list for next July :) :)

MrsKoala · 24/08/2014 17:39

Oh no i'm so disappointed, i was expecting to love that bag when i clicked on the link, but i think it's horrid. :(

BeyondTheSea · 24/08/2014 19:16

I really like the Tessie, also saw the clutch in JL today and it's vv nice. Unfortunately I have no need for another clutch.

MrsKoala · 24/08/2014 19:29

I never seem to buy clutches. I always go for day to day bags i think i'll get more use out of, then i have a 'do' to go to and realise i've got nothing to wear. I bought one in the sale years ago, but despite being lovely (Dune i think) it's very distinctive and i wear it to functions with the same people about 3 times a year. So i think i should look for another one! I would only go up to £100 i think tho as i don't think it's worth it to spend more for such infrequent use.

Anywhere i could get a nice clutch for under £100?

santamarianovella · 24/08/2014 19:43

I'm not too crazy about the venta hobo, feel I can't wear it with coats, I prefer this one
