Can s and b exist without judging?

It's about skirts. People do like these skirts and. People don't like these skirts. All at once there was the criticism that this is a horrible thread.

Can you discuss fashion choices without some judging? Or would that lead to posts like 'well if you like it that's nice.' Which are nice but unhelpful if needing advice.

I missed the skirt thread. But no, I think you can't discuss fashion choices without being opinionated, unless you actually have no interest in clothes.

I like the fact that on S&B people can say, 'That's disgusting' to each other, and accept each other's idiosyncrasies/errors of judgement/quirks/differing tastes etc.

Eg: Tethers and I have completely different taste but I absolutely love talking clothes to her, and we can happily take the mick out of each other's choices. I have a bit of a penchant for crazy skirts, for example, that I suspect nearly everybody on S&B would detest - happy to have them exclaimed over in disgust, as I like them so that is all that matters.

Maybe it's when non regulars come on. I even see stuff in shops other peiple would like from here

I don't think you can discuss fashion choices without some judging and you're right it will lead to posts that are nice but unhelpful. We all have different opinions on what we think looks good/flattering based on our own tastes/figures/budgets etc. Its what makes S and B interesting.

I know there are lots of people on MN and in RL who are of the opinion that it simply does not matter what something looks like, if you love it and you're comfortable then thats all that matters. In the grand scheme of things it really isn't that important, but we all know people and see people everyday who look a rights dog dinner and would benefit from some good, constructive and honest advice.

I'm quite sure if any of you were to look at my wardrobe, you could give me your opinions, but I'm not going to put myself through that!

Leggings are hideous, totally ghastly garments worn mostly by people who could do with losing a few pounds.

They are also something this fatty wears every day

I totally respect the folk that say they look hideous, they do and yet I wear them because I find them easy to wear and go with all my dresses. They stop my legs rubbing together and prevent me from bites.

I think judging on S & B is fine. Presumably people often come on here with the S & B equivalent of "Does my bum look big in this?" and expect a truthful answer!

There are plenty of clothes I don't like, wouldn't wear and think are unflattering. I just wouldn't say so unless specifically asked. It's easy.

I enjoy S&B even though I think lots of raved-about items are hideous, and even though most of the things I love would probably be considered equally hideous by more stylish types on here

Commenting negatively on another person's photo without being asked for your critique just seems needlessly rude. Why have a bash at someone who's happy? What do you get out of it? I don't know, don't get it myself.

Judging is fine, especially if you are asking for an opinion.

It's a tricky one. I think that thread was rude and pointless, what's the point I starting a thread that's only purpose is to run down an item of clothing that lots of people probably like and wear. However, when asking peoples opinions on this board, it is obviously judging to state an opinion, which IMO is fine. As a side thought though, I often think (whilst often massively useful) asking an opinion on clothes on this board is kind of a strange thing to do, as you don't know who you're asking. You will get an opinion from someone much younger, someone much older, someone with a massively different style to you, someone whose clothes you would hate if you saw them in real life etc etc etc ......

For example the thread about whether the shoes were frumpy or not. Most likely 'frumpy' people said they were lovely, and edgy young fashionable people said they were frumpy and awful. So what has this op achieved? I guess only the op can answer that, and vey often these posts are hugely useful but I hope that illustrates my point.

Geez maneez fashion would be very boring if we all liked the same stuff. I think judge away!

As long as it's not dissing someone's wedding dress/party frock that they've already bought. That's a bit mean.

I think pretty much every item of clothing I have ever worn has been described on this board at some point as being ugly, mumsy, chavvy, tarty, mutton, grannyish . . . the list goes on! Do I pay any attention to what randoms on the internet think? No!

If i post here to ask an opinion on a pair of shoes or dress or whatever i do expect total honesty. Of course not to the point of rudeness but i do appreciate complete honesty. My friends or family may not be so honest so it's important to get 'real' opinions sometimes. And you'll definitely get that here. And thank goodness i say

People manage to be honest, and sometimes brutally honest, on the 'what do you think of this item of clothing' threads without causing huge offense. Perhaps it's the way they deliver their opinions. I don't know.

Well I think its mean when someone posts about something they love or just bought and then people sneer. Asking for opinions before purchasing is different.

But those blanket type threads of 'all white jeans are vile', well they're just stupid.

No as everyone has their own idea of what looks good. I have never seen anyone look good wearing harem pants or printed trousers though many people on here like them. I thought I was missing something so bought some scuba floral trousers from ASOS I donated them to charity the next day they were hideous. If you are asking opinions then you shouldn't be offended clothes are being admired or criticised not the wearer.

S&B can certainly function, thrive in fact without ridiculous, bullshit assertions that certain items look terrible on everybody.

And yes, there is a whole world of difference between "I'm not sure that particular style really works for your body shape, maybe try this instead?" And "ugh NO that is VILE and you look AWFUL".

But I'm not a regular here so, what do I know?

Just read the skirt thread. I didn't think anybody was being especially rude about the people who posted photographs (though I guess it helps that they both looked v slim and leggy).

There are lots of things I don't like (white jeans are one of them!) but Mrs C looks lovely in hers, so my opinion about white jeans in general is absolutely meaningless there, and I am pretty sure that you won't give a flying fig if I say I dislike white jeans generally, Mrs C, yep?!

I guess where judging (ie expressing negative opinions) is less okay is if a poster is v low on confidence and is asking for help. Most of us who frequent S&B a lot tend to know what we like and are confident enough to wear it regardless of what anybody else thinks, I suppose.
