Hi all.. , several of us on S&B have been posting about our clothese spending ( we know thatis what S&B is about [smile}.

We have wardrobes and chest of drawers utterlyand totally rammed...

We have piles of clothese we've even forgotten we have,(some with the lables still on )

We obsessively peruse S&B looking at recommendations (and then buy them, just because there are there)

We have no willpower,(yet Wink)

We are a friend to every online shop and discount offer going..(not to mention credit card companies)

We just cannot resist sales..

Our postmen and women and the local couriers are getting to know us better than our friends and neighbours..

BUT we want toget back into control and just enjoy what we have to wear.

To this end We the Undersigned PLEDGE to a NO spend August on clothes bags, accessories and shoes (and also make up and beauty products if that is your weakness)

The ONLY exceptions will be tights, basic underwear (knickers and bras) and to replace something that has Genuinley worn out..

It will be hard .. It will be tough.. We will have to be accountable to each other ..BUT WE CAN DO IT!

So Who's in? Smile

Sign up below .. (and try and resist spending for the rest of July.. this is NOT atime to stock up before too late!!)..

those who sign up wil be prepared check in here regularily

(A tyrant ain't I? Grin

Morning ladies!

I'm going to sort out my wardrobes/drawers today. I'm going to try and not throw anything away as I'm thinking the fullness will help me realise I have enough! But I'm going to order things, vests, ts, long sleeve ts, dresses, skirts, jeans etc.
I'm going to then wear a uniform each day and work my way through all of my clothes, and if I try it on and it's rubbish I'll then throw/charity shop it.
I've sorted and thrown stuff away before and ended up buying what I felt were gaps in my wardrobe.

Today I've been to work and I'm back again at 2:30, so I'm just wearing a long sleeve Zara Breton (about a year old) and an old pair of Reebok track suit bottoms (at least 10 years old!!!) - (Stylish eh!) but good for cleaning etc...

CoconutAmericano · 28/07/2014 10:11

I read a good tip once about how to cull your clothes. You turn all your hangers the "wrong" way round (with your clothes on them). As you wear your clothes, you turn the hanger back the "right" way. Any hangers left still in the wrong way round position after 6 months, those clothes get culled!

Karbea · 28/07/2014 10:24

That is an excellent idea!

Greengardenpixie · 28/07/2014 10:29

Apart from 2 pairs of tummy control pants thats all i have bought..but i did browse but didnt buy :)
I received 2 new catalogues in the post today but after a quick look i threw them in the bin..the joules one pained me a bit as there was 15% off on it but hey ho!!! Oh and sadly coveting a pair of wideleg jeans that i have been searching from on another site...almost did press the 'order' button...and then because i debated over leg length...just didnt bother. Please can we think of something that i can say to myself to stop me in my tracks..i feel i was soooo close!!!

Greengardenpixie · 28/07/2014 10:31

I have a couple of skirts that i never wear...but i just cant get rid of them because they are beautiful. Its not that i dont like them/dont fit..i just dont get round to putting them on as i have sooo much other stuff!!

LightastheBreeze · 28/07/2014 10:52

I really need to do this, the thing is I have just ordered some swimwear from the M&S 30% off offer, 2 swimsuits and 1 tankini, I will only keep 1, I do need it though, this is what i tell myself anyway and longer ones are so hard to get.

The thing is now DS has left home I have now spread my stuff into his wardrobe and drawers, so I now have 3 wardrobes and umpteen drawers full of my stuff and this is after my latest cull. Blush

Also when the new stuff comes it is not dissimilar to stuff I have already got and DS's room should be used for more useful stuff not my clothes overflow.

peasandlove · 28/07/2014 11:08

I should join you but I'm waiting for some sandals to go on sale and if they do during august I'd be inconsolable Grin
If I manage to snap them up before then I will
Good luck to you all

Emmablue · 28/07/2014 11:18

My name is Emma and I'm a shopaholic! I am trying not to spend much in August as I need to save for my holiday in September! Brought quite a lot this month!

ShyGirlie · 28/07/2014 11:23

count me in. utterly broke this month. trying to save to build a house. wardrobe bursting at seams, yet i always have nothing to wear.

this is going to be hard!!

Sleepyfergus · 28/07/2014 12:03

I find that finding stuff to sell on eBay is quite distracting. Since I've listed stuff last night, I'm constantly checking to see if anyone is 'watching' or bidding on it. Better looking at that than online shops. Bloody Boden though, keep emailing me about 15% off but I have been strong so far (2 days....long way to go)

Perhaps it would be a good to write down what we would have virtually spent and see just how much it would amount up to? Although I think it would scare me. At the time though, £30 or £40 here and there doesn't seem to bother me, but if I actually faced up to it and looked at the total, it would brutally confirm that I am buying beyond my means.

Apatite1 · 28/07/2014 12:17

My main problem is too much disposable income, but not enough space (we have a tiny flat). We are saving for a house, but it's a great act of discipline to put away thousands of pounds every month, rather than blow a good chunk of it on a designer handbag every month. I can still easily get to this money! I DO NOT need any more stuff!

I need a way to lock up money so I have to work too hard to get it. I never buy on credit cards, so am sure I won't circumvent things that way. Any ideas on how to to this??

CoconutAmericano · 28/07/2014 12:44

Can you get your money taken straight out of your bank account on pay day and put into one of those savings accounts where you have to give the bank a months notice before you make a withdrawl?

Karbea · 28/07/2014 12:45

Open a bank account and set up a dd on pay day that takes out thousands of pounds, so it's saved before you can get your hands on it!

PeachandBlack · 28/07/2014 12:46

I'm tempted to join in. I can't think of any event, situation or weather condition that could come up in the next month that I haven't already got something suitable to wear.

I do need underwear but see that Laska has permitted buying that!

luckygirl322 · 28/07/2014 13:04

Me too! I'm in. My first MN post-sadly, I really need to do this.

Oly4 · 28/07/2014 13:14

I'm in. Need to stop as have so much already. I shop through boredom mostly (am on maternity leave and while two kids keep me v busy I can often browse the internet with one hand!). We have a big disposable income but I feel guilty about purchases as I have beautiful clothes already. I also seem to buy for a fantasy life I don't lead. Why does a mum who works from home need so much cashmere (sale prices... But still)

Greengardenpixie · 28/07/2014 13:23

I also seem to buy for a fantasy life i dont lead. I dont buy cashmere or really way out posh things but some of my stuff is not the type of thing i would just throw on daily. I actually would have more opportunity to wear it to work but i am a primary teacher and things do get stained with doing art and messy activities and sitting on the floor. I also hate people saying 'oh is that new?' over and over again i do feel ashamed Blush

Apatite1 · 28/07/2014 14:27

Coconut, I didn't even realise there were accounts like that! Duh. Thank you I will definitely look into it. It will stop all sorts of profligate spending. I like to think I'm a good saver but in reality I could do much better Blush

Apatite1 · 28/07/2014 14:34

Oly4, glad I'm not the only one. I think I'd actually be better at saving money if say I only had few hundred or a thousand pounds of discretionary income each month, as I'd squirrel that away for a rainy day, no question. Instead I look at our accounts on pay day and think "ooh, let's get that totally unnecessary item of clothing because I'll still have loads left over". I need to adjust this attitude.

Oly4 · 28/07/2014 15:27

I think you've got to think that income could be taken away at any moment and how you'd feel having spent it on clothes! I don't think we have as much left over as it sounds like you do but I still spend without thinking on clothes I don't need! In reality I wear the cashmere and silk and all the 'posh Sunday lunch' tops once every few months. Stupid to have so much of it when day to day I'm just getting toddler dirt in me and wear leggings. Companies are very good at selling the fantasy life. Just look at a Boden catalogue! It's all beach picnics with perfect kids and roaring log fires. I also love white company stuff... But my life is far from pristine and white!

Oly4 · 28/07/2014 15:28

Toddler dirt ON me!

Pollywallywinkles · 28/07/2014 18:22

I've stopped buying already as I've had payday and I'm determined not to buy anything until next payday. So not quite August, but a month nonetheless.

Today I have resisted a bargain pair of ballet flats in a brand I like and a colour I don't have, so feeling pleased.

Laska42 · 28/07/2014 18:24

I also seem to buy for a fantasy life i dont lead..
That is so me greengarden pixie ! The sad truth is i dont even go out much, but in my head I am yound and cool festival fashionista (never been to a festival and sure id hate it) , or am regularily invited out to smart dinners, theatre or cocktail parties andYyes, I keep buying clothes for that fantasy.. Blush Sad aint I? ..

in RL I am a married semi-rural living 56yr old Local Government employee..with grown up kids ( and a grandma!) . I do a professional job and have to look smartish for work (sometimes) but as its public sector I earn not much over the national average wage of £25k and I do not have savings, investments a trust fund , rich parents or DH or chance of a large inheritance .. I do have a credit card debt of over £1000 ..

Im also ashamed to s tell you that I spent nearly £500 on the Kate Moss for Topshop collection earlier this year , a suede fringe jacket ( unworn) a kaftan (have worn that about 3 times so thats ok ) and a long chiffon maxi.. ( gawd knows when ill wear that ) ..Blush

So ou see why i have to stop Hmm

Ok, though I have a confession .. today I bought one more thing ..but its a replacement for soemthimg i would have worn loads.. ..Today to work wore a (sadly newish) pair of linen/ mix crops today - stupidly i bought them because i thought they were a bargain. They were not and despite being washed twice they itch like sackcloth and are now after two wears going in the charity shop bag .. I replaced with another pair of Max studio pure linen ones from TK maxx, (£15 and which need to be shortened ) . I promise that will be IT. ...

I have a confession too deep breath. Ive just bought a pair of jeans for £35 in the Whistles sale. In my defence, it's not quite August yet Blush

CoconutAmericano · 28/07/2014 18:36

I have it bad don't I?
