I look like a mushroom, I'm gutted!

I have been feeling all fat and grotty lately, so went to hairdressers for a change and now it's a million times worse :(

I showed the lady a photo of what I wanted, and have ended up with nothing like it really. I think it's too dark now? Def too short. I hesitate to say this in case theres a very slim chance my hairdresser is reading, but I really hate it.

Can any one recommend any solutions? Beyond hats / extensions / crying for the next 3 months.

I've included a before / after photo so if I'm outed by it - I'm so desperate I don't care!

It is a very good cut.

What did you ask for?

HermioneWeasley · 07/06/2014 08:41

It is very different to what you had before, which is your preferred style?

It's a good cut and your hair looks very healthy, thick and shiny

I feel your pain though, I am still growing out a disaster cut from February. My mantra was "every day my hair gets a little bit longer"

gamerchick · 07/06/2014 08:44

Don't worry when you wash and style it yourself it'll look different.. I get a same cut but with a fringe.

It may have been cut so short because of th condition it was in but font worry that style only lasts about 4 weeks.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/06/2014 08:56

It looks so much nicer than before and the colour is beautiful !

Wash it today because I think you'll get some more length once it's relaxed. Nothing mushroomy about it at ALL thoughSmile

polkadotdelight · 07/06/2014 08:57

I think it looks really healthy and shiny, it looks in far better condition than the before picture. I probably wouldn't risk a fringe if you are already unhappy with it though. I do agree with other posters - hairdressers often are enthusiastic with the round brush and you come out with very full hair which is not for everyone. It will probably look different when you wash it and dry it yourself.

I went that short about 8 weeks ago and its amazing how much its grown down already. Also, I find if you really don't like it that french plaiting a small section on the longer side (especially if asymmetrical) looks really nice.

Wishfulmakeupping · 07/06/2014 09:02

The colour is lovely so glossy! I like the cut but think a side fringe would soften it around your face. I think its a good cut it sits really well I think as others said its a huge change so will take a while to get used to but with a side fringe I think it will look even more fab

QueenCadbury · 07/06/2014 09:07

I haven't read all the replies but I have a bob and when it's cut short like yours it can often look mushroom like (I have a fringe so often look lego head too) at first. Don't do anything drastic yet as honestly it will settle. Give it a few days and wash and dry it yourself and it may feel very different.

Fwiw, I think it looks lovely and not at all mushroom like ( but we are our own worst critic).

burnishedsilver · 07/06/2014 09:12

Its actually really nice. I think its just a shock to the system because its such a big change. Give it a week or two to get used to it before you do anything.

cathyandclaire · 07/06/2014 09:24

I think it looks gorgeous :)
After a salon blow dry with ends curled under it always looks a little 'grown up' but it will be hugely versatile, sleek and stylish or wavy and cool like Fearne Cotton, I don't think you need a fringe.

BumWad · 07/06/2014 09:30

It looks nice.but your hair before is nicer. That is all

It's a fabulous cut and an expert colour change. But....it's so, so different to how you looked before that it'll take some major getting used to. You've changed your whole "image" in a matter of hours (in the chair). Give it time. I think it'll grow on you (excuse pun). It could be less mushrooms by softening the front with layers and you could remove some of the mushroom or rounded effect by having it thinned slightly but really, I'd leave it for a week. If you still want to change it, I'd ask for some warmer highlights (brown-ish) around your face (as though you'd warmed it naturally, in the sun) and have a few layers put through.

Call the salon today and tell them how you feel about the length/tattoo visibility so that they know, you're not happy. That way, it won't look like your just after a refund, if you leave it a week.

Overall....I like it. Smile

Nerf · 07/06/2014 09:36

Honestly?
I think it looks a bit corporate and the colour could do with some lighter tones. So if you aren't wearing smart casual all the time, and are more jeans and a tee I can see why you don't feel right.
But it isn't in any way stand out awful at all and no one will be looking at you seeing 'mushroom' ! Not sure where you get that from!
Don't do a fringe if you aren't happy, you will have even less option later on. Sit tight, wash it yourself and see how you feel.

kentishgirl · 07/06/2014 09:44

It looks a lot better than the 'before' photo. To be blunt, your blonde hair looked very dry and damaged and going rat-taily. (sorry)

This colour is fantastic for you and I love the little highlights.

A side sweep fringe might make you feel more comfortable - and it makes it easier to style (I have this hair cut). Having the very long leek bob look at the front is a fucker to style. It either sits very flat if you blow dry/straighten it to death, or it starts to wave and not sit all nice and sleek like the hairdressers can get it (it seems your hair has a bit of a curl/wave to it). The fringe gets rid of this awkward bit. You can then also tuck both sides behind your ears if you don't have time to mess with styling it, and it looks good.

netty36 · 07/06/2014 09:47

Don't so anything for a couple if weeks.
I had a similar transformation and ended up loving it after totally hating it. I couldn't get used to seeing my neck!!
You hair looks lush, glossy and well cut... It will grow nicely!!
Don't get a fringe until you give yourself time to adjust.

Cocolepew · 07/06/2014 09:49

It's really lovely, its a big change but I presume you asked for it! I totally agree with hairdressers and round brushes.

The is a short cut now and its actually called mushroom.

Thank you all for your replies - I really appreciate them all, even the ones who prefer my hair before (cos lets face it, that's what I think!)

I've just bribed my mum to watch ds while I wash and style it myself.... I am like a goldfish wearing oven gloves when I do my hair myself so I'm not sure I've made an improvement! Will try attach a photo again.

I think I have figured out that I don't like how it makes my forehead look huge, and I think I just feel a bit dowdy maybe?

I'm thinking that a few more highlights and to wait it out is the answer, I wanted it a bit longer and swishier, so I guess time will have to be the solution to that one.

On a side note, all my make up looks weird! Think heading to boots for an update might help as well.

Lastly, you are all lovely for helping me. I don't think I'm grown up enough for this hair, but you have all made me feel lots better. And on the bright side, it is in MUCH better condition from the rats tails I was sporting before!

I think it looks fab. If you have gone from blonde to dark and long to short, it could be the new you! Everyone will make a big fuss when they see you. Go with it and if you really don't end up liking it, just gradually grow it and go lighter.

sillymillyb · 07/06/2014 09:53

Oh I keep cross posting!

I agree about corporate looking - that's just not me at all! I used to drive a bloody monster truck not work behind a desk.

I think I've lost my identity a tad since having ds, this was maybe an exploration into being a grown up that didn't pan out!

I look like a mushroom, I'm gutted!

sillymillyb · 07/06/2014 09:55

Sorry, that came out wrong about working behind a desk - I mean, I think, that the people from my old life would laugh at me.

Ill shut up now!

Ps coco I would never have been able to pull that proper mushroom look off! I have too fat a face for anything pixie like sadly !

Cocolepew · 07/06/2014 10:02

I have a pixie and look like a hamster storing nuts, it can be done Grin

I would get a sweeping fringe cut myself, then at least that bit will be swishy.

The colour is lovely, your hair looks really healthy.

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 07/06/2014 10:03

I think it's lovely. It looks so much better in terms of condition and thickness. In comparison, the blonde looks straggly, thin & nothingy.

IDugUpADiamond · 07/06/2014 10:03

I'm going to go slightly against the grain here. I think the new colour is a bit harsh for your skin tone. As it happens, I also think that your previous hair colour was unsuitable for your skin tone. I think something in between would complement you better.

As for the cut, it is a good cut but I feel it is very mature and serious for you. Your previous hair was perhaps a little young though. Again, something in between.

I do agree that a long side fringe would go well with the cut.

If this was me I would highlight it straight away wait for it to grow. It is a good cut so it will grow lovely.

Fcukfifa · 07/06/2014 10:05

I too prefer the old hair (sorry!) but only because that's more my style (relaxed boho-y)

But it still suits you shorter and it matches your eyebrows perfectly!

I think if you straighten the bottom bit, it will sit on your shoulders and look a lot more modern, like fearne cottons longish bob, then muss (it this a word?!) it up a bit to give texture.

Also, have you tried that volume powder dust? You lift up the top layer of your hair, sprinkle it onto your roots and push hair up and it adds loads of volume and texture
