My turn......

I still think fondly of Paul Merton asking 'Can you get Fuck Me socks?' on HIGNFY Grin

CointreauVersial · 17/05/2014 00:18

Bloody hell, Strops, I also got married in pink snakeskin heeled mules. Jinx! I flogged them on eBay shortly afterwards, so they were never adopted as Drinking Shoes, sadly.

The football club awards night and general shindig turned out to be a convivial evening. I retired as Club Sec this time last year, and have kept my head down somewhat since then, so it was a good catch up. Several people took the opportunity to have a little winge to me about the Chairman's latest transgression/insensitivity/whatever, which made me realise how glad I am to have waved goodbye to all the political crap. A last minute raffle ticket purchase turned out to be a fortuitous one, and I came away with a Pamper Hamper - chocs, smellies, a foot massager, and three trashy novels (I ignored DH's cries of "get the beer").

I had a good chat with the dad of the girl who ran away earlier in the year. It was GCSE stress, and feeling unable to talk to anyone about it, poor lass. But apparently she has really settled down and is coping well now it's all in the open.

Strops - I'm laughing at the thought of your DD with indelible face graffiti, desperately scrubbing..... sounds like she's coping OK.

Up early for the final Saturday mock exam in maths. Won't see DD1 till tomorrow after her prom now.

We are invited out to dinner tonight but DH has the runs. He still thinks he's going but I am planning on getting a lift with the neighbour. Why can't he understand that he's ill and needs to stay at home and rest and not spread his germs elsewhere.

Deffo not showing DS Parisian boys Mrs SWink

Blackduck · 17/05/2014 07:18

I saw those Parisian boys only google box last night - which had dp and I in fits.... Their reaction to The Eurovision was priceless.......
'I have a photo of you in a bra'
'That was after eighteen pints'

And The American Pie convo 'he should have gone in sideways'.

Stropps I want to have your attitude to gardening because CVs DH and dp were clearly raised the same way, but whilst I can ignore the weeds in most places the patio does my head in - pathclear here I come.

Here it was a bottle of wine and (I belated realised) no tea....

Blackduck · 17/05/2014 07:19

On
Belatedly

Sheesh I do have three degrees - but you wouldn't know it from that post

bigTillyMint · 17/05/2014 07:20

GCSE stressSad
I do not remember it being like that back in the day. Do any of you remember being so stressed? What is the system doing to our children?Angry

Good luck to your DD hatty, and happy prom!

Blackduck · 17/05/2014 07:34

Fun BTM I had that sme convo the other day with a friend - no was the answer.....

cremolafoam · 17/05/2014 07:37

I agree BTM , what is the system doing to our dcs? Miserable to think of that poor girl CV. I am so glad she was found and doing well now. There must be scores of others whose stories don't end up that way.Sad
Dd is very world weary about the whole thing. I simply can't remember feeling anything like that.

Hatty hope dd has a great time tonight.Smile

Rosebag · 17/05/2014 07:38

The stress I had from my O levels (god, I'm old) was not knowing what would come up, and realising that luck played a fair part in it all. Having said that, getting a B or C wasn't the disaster then, that my 16 year old thinks it is now. Maybe the pressure's greater experiencing it as a parent, looking on?

I'm escaping it all this morning …working in the Euston area for a few hours, teaching adults. Quite looking forward, despite spitting and swearing when the alarm went off at 6.30 this morning.

Going to see a matinee drama this afternoon at a local theatre…but at the moment refusing to take DD who has (another ) attack of cystitis…she's so prone to it, poor girl. I just can't face having her running in and out of the theatre all the time, especially if we aren't on the end of a row. Happy Saturday, everyone!

bigTillyMint · 17/05/2014 07:42

Poor DD Rosebag - I had cystitis once and it was horrible.

NUFC69 · 17/05/2014 07:46

I just remember walking to external exams - a long crocodile of girls, and the teacher pointing out to us that the B & B on the way had put "accomodation" on its board which was WRONG.

Another lovely day: DH going to badminton, I have to wash the kitchen floor (I dropped a big container of hot chocolate last night), then round to DD's for a belated birthday celebration for DGD. Bike ride later.

Good luck with the mocks and the prom.

NUFC69 · 17/05/2014 07:50

DSis suffers from cystitis often, Rose, and swears by cranberry juice, although scientifically thought not to help. Not nice for your DD: I hope she gets over it soon.

Rosebag · 17/05/2014 07:51

Thanks Tilly We're still trying to work out why she suffers so much. It's a real bugger getting her to to remember to drink. She seems to go a whole school day without having one…I event have to stand over her like a prison guard to see that she has a drink with her breakfast!

bigTillyMint · 17/05/2014 07:53

Rosebag, DD is the same re not drinking. It is a mare! However she has not yet had cystitis, thankfully. She will drink flavoured water (especially fizzy!) as well as the usual fizzy drinks and juice, but really hardly anything most days.

Rosebag · 17/05/2014 08:17

I just don't think drinking occurs to her most of the time, Tilly. The cystitis usually settles with her drinking a few pints of water or lemon barley plus a bit of a rest. Once she had to have antibiotics, though. Ah well. Off to get the tube. Oh joy. Laters x

hattymattie · 17/05/2014 09:07

Rosebag - in the French pharmacy we can get small doses of neat Cranberry juice, not the Ocean Spray sugar loaded stuff. It tastes disgusting but is really effective - I think Cranberries are a natural antiseptic.

On exams - I thought O levels were supposed to be harder than what they do now but agree that I don't remember this level of stress unless it is indeed us experiencing them as parents. Having said that, I don't remember the DP's being overly stressed on my behalf! In those days I don't remember stress as a concept - maybe we all just got on with it.

lalsy · 17/05/2014 09:16

Catching up, a bit randomly, Stropps that is great about your dd and the FE college. And well done to Wilbur's ds. I loved those white straws, indeed they were the only craft activity I could ever do (I also sewed my hand with a sewing machine. IS that macrame?

Welcome Rosebag, I am a Londoner too, dc 17 and 15.

bigTillyMint · 17/05/2014 09:25

Lalsy, I sewed my finger on the machine on many occasions as a teen and DD did it for the first time in her art lesson the other weekSmile

lalsy · 17/05/2014 09:43

BTM, the internet is a marvellous thing....I have lived all my life believing that I was uniquely clumsy and a hazard to those around me. I am overjoyed when a fairly simple manual task goes well (addle saw this this week).....I now stand tall with finger-sewers. Grin

Auriga · 17/05/2014 09:58

Morning all.

Welcome Rosebag and Bindibach to our crepey haven.

Still limping behind here, literally as well as figuratively. DD's exams start properly next week and she's also had some controlled assessments. She's developed a mysterious pain in her knee and is full of cold, floppy and tired. Needs some serious coddling this weekend, I think. She's gone off to orchestra happily this morning.

DH still sighs and says 'oh dear' in a sort of heartbroken way every time he coughs Sad Grin though he does seem to be improving overall.

I've missed my lovely dog walks in all this good weather but found out that I normally walk miles in my job without noticing. It's remarkably hard to adjust so I've had a slow, wincing kind of week.

Glad to hear the first lot of offsprings' exams seem to be going well. QQ I like the silk suit but I'd look like a Tellytubby in it Grin. Windy how did your dress-up occasion go? And Stropps good to hear more from you, hope the better mood is holding up.

Stropperella · 17/05/2014 10:07

I dropped dd and friend at school at 9 for their Geography revision session. They were not in a good mood, but I can't say as I blame them. I agree that the stress and pressure surrounding GCSEs is ludicrous and unhealthy. I think dd has, however, begun to get her head around the idea that a B grade would not be an unmitigated disaster, although the school tells everyone that they need all As and A*s or they won't get to a decent uni. Well maybe university isn't for everyone. I'm trying to keep an open mind about it all in the hope that dd will learn to do that too. Ds has already - at 9 - decided that he wants to go to drama school. Oh dear.

I actually looked up some Eng Lang O level past papers online the other day. I'm afraid I thought they were pathetically easy in comparison to at least some of what dd is doing for Eng Lang GCSE. I suspect the MFL papers would tell a different story, though.

Dd is another teen who goes for extended periods without drinking, although a year or two ago she read something about the symptoms of dehydration and realised that she suffered from several of them a lot of the time, particularly towards the end of the school day, and she has been a bit better about drinking water since then and trying to make sure she has a drink of milk or juice at breakfast.

Now off to quickly walk the dog before taking ds to the school fete where he is playing in a football tournament. This is the boy who up until about 2 months ago hated football with a passion and whose complete lack of ball skills (think - aiming to kick ball, missing and then falling over) was a source of much amusement among his friends. I will be too scared to watch. I have seriously no clue about how or why he is in Team 2 (out of 3).

Lalsy, you and me both on the clumsiness front, then. In my teens, I was frequently found cluttering up A&E with what my dm termed "old lady injuries", i.e. broken wrists, knackered ankles etc, having just fallen over. This is why I am not keen on slidey-type sporting pursuits such as skiing, skating etc.

originalpiratematerial · 17/05/2014 10:09

Hi Rosebag - I'm in London as well - my DSs are nearly 15, nearly 13 and nearly 10 (all summer-borns).

Stropperella · 17/05/2014 10:09

x-posts, Auriga. Sorry to hear you are still limping. Is it ligament damage?

herbaceous · 17/05/2014 10:10

By Jove, that original crepey thread was jolly amusing. I'm mildly dismayed though that I've got about 10 pages in, and have yet to have made an appearance.

Sang in the G&S last night, six inches from a stage light that grilled my head. Will now spend three hours of this glorious day, closeted in a dark theatre for the matinee performance.

It reminds me of my late teens, when I used to earn money playing my bassoon in shows like this. I got £100 for a week when I was 16 - riches beyond my wildest dreams. Bought a fair amount of Iron Maiden lipstick from Miss selfridge.

Gave a lift back to one of the other singers, who earns a crust be singing professionally and by teaching English to businessmen. I've added the latter to my career ideas!

Stropperella · 17/05/2014 10:10

And also hello from me, Rosebag and Bindi :)
