Are you a winter colouring? If so come and join us for chat about clothes/make up following on from part 1 here and part 2 here

Do you want to know more about what a winter is? These resources are good places to start here and here.

Scared to try bright lipstick? Previous winter favourite makeup items include Mac Plumful, Revlon Lip Butters in Berry Smoothie and Red Velvet and Revlon gloss in Bordeaux. They are all good places to start without being scarily bright for a newly diagnosed winter. More makeup tips can be found here and by reading through previous threads.

TheGrassIsSinging

Mine are:

Charcoal
Indigo
Royal Purple
Royal Blue
Fuchsia
Damson
Burgundy
Carmine
Dark Emerald

So, almost the same (I think I've got an brighter list!).

Don't be scared. I'm really not keen on pink or green but have started wearing tops in fuchsia and and emerald and always get compliments.

Charcoal, burgundy and blue seems to work well for something a little less 'bright'

Hi fellow winters,
I seem to only check in here when I have a lip colour to hopefully pass on to someone else - I bought the revlon lipgloss in bordeau (linked in the opening post) but it doesn't work for me - looks like I have been eating a jam doughnut messily. If anyone wants it please PM me.

PoemGirl thanks for the Mac recommendation - sounds like a lovely colour. I am going through duty free soon so will try to pick it up then.

I am otherwise quite pleased with my lipsticks now, mainly tips picked up from these threads. I do really like the revlon lip butters, I just favour a more subtle lip colour / look I think.

Thegrass what colours are you normally used to wearing? Navy and charcoal can work as neutrals while you find your feet with the brighter colours? I tend not to necessarily wear a bright colour unless I particularly want to, and can dress quite neutrally at times. I also don't only stick to my 100% ** colours only and just dress within the winter palette as otherwise I would get bored.

Perhaps you should look in your wardrobe and see what you have that is in winter colours first then wear those initially while you figure out the gaps in your wardrobe iyswim?

Angelinajelly (great name btw) sorry you didn't have a good experience. I would definitely try to go back (though it sounds like you weren't keen on your consultant?) as a lot of people have said on this thread you have to really see it yourself for it to work.

KosherBacon · 30/03/2014 13:06

Ahhh... I was looking for a photo on DHs phone and found that he's taken a picture of each of my swatch cards! I have him well trained! Now how to explain the rating system drawn on them without it sounding like I've been snooping!

Thanks Sorrel and Pop. My problem is - I dont have a single thing in my wardrobe in winter colours! And no money at all at the moment to buy clothes. I'm planning on saving for a proper autumn/winter wardrobe that I'll shop for in my colours, but for noe am going to have to stick with what I have got and make very small changes, I think.

On that note, can anyone recommend some good nail Varnishesin winter colours? Something bright - maybe raspberry? Going to get my nails done tomorrow, so thought I'd start there Grin

Hello poem welcome back.

grass welcome. Gorgeous colours. I'm a sprinter so all my best colours are the really bright ones. I tend to always wear a white/grey/navy top and add in a bright cardi or handbag. It does get less scary wearing bright colours. Maybe just start off with bright nail varnish?

angelina definitely go back if not happy. Where there other people there who could see it?

Thegrassissinging you're not alone ! I had my colours done in January. I don't own because I don't like any of my 2* colours. While I get I'm a winter, I couldn't see why some colours scored better than others. So I wear black, grey or navy (not winter's navy as I don't have that in my wardrobe). Lipstick - not as bright as I was encouraged but not pale. But the day did get me to eBay 2 or 3 things which have never suited me so in that respect it was useful.

I'm due to go for my style day but I was underwhelmed by the colour day that I haven't booked it yet. That and the fact that I don't have 2 of the 4 outfits I'm supposed to bring along as I don't have occasion for clothes like that. I buy clothes once or twice a year (I don't wear things out very frequently) so I think I'm going to focus on not buying other seasons colours more than choosing particular winter colours. Does that make sense ?

MissScatterbrain · 31/03/2014 08:39

Angelina - go back and explain that you don't get it. Ask her to show you how you look better in winter colours than in summer colours. You have paid a lot of money and if she is a decent consultant then she would not want you to be unhappy.

MissScatterbrain · 31/03/2014 08:41

Not been on here for a while as I haven't bought anything new for ages and don't intend to do any shopping as my wardrobe and make up counter has everything I need.

QueenCadbury · 31/03/2014 09:25

grass funtime fuschia Rimmel Funtime fuschia is my current favourite polish.

did what kind of winter are you? For me, I can totally see how the brighter colours look best whereas the burgundy, mole, stone etc look not so great. If anything would probrably look better in springs blues than the sultry end of the winter spectrum. When I did my style day I didn't take outfits but I did take a randome selection of clothes. Some which are my favourite and feel really me and others which don't work quite so well. It gave my consultant a really good idea of what I liked and also helped me understand why certain styles don't suit me.

MrPop · 31/03/2014 10:05

TheGrass how about dyeing some clothes as an inexpensive stop gap? Myself and a few others on this thread have had some successes. I think it works best with natural fibres but it is very easy. I have used the dylon navy, pink and purple with good results. Someone used the red too and I think it worked well iirc.

didireallysaythat · 31/03/2014 11:55

QueenCadbury my consultant didn't go into types of seasons, just that I'm a winter. I haven't been able to find a definition of the different types, and I'm not sure what I'd do with the info anyway. Good advice on the style day - my consultant was wearing a teal suit with orange/brown belt which didn't appeal to me at all so I think I may just be on a different wavelength !!!

JennyWren · 31/03/2014 17:25

Thanks to Sorrell for convincing me to try the Revlon Backstage. It looks really dark in the tube but it is perfect on - I really like it. I have a feeling that it is going to be my go-to colour.

SorrelForbes · 31/03/2014 17:26

Ooh, was that me? I'm not sure it was Blush as I haven't got that lipstick.

TheGrassIsSinging · 31/03/2014 20:00

MrPop - great idea. Never dne it before and would never have thought of it! I have some plain vests and tees I might try out with dye. Thank you!

pinkflaming0 · 31/03/2014 21:02

Can recommend navy Dylon machine dye. Even chucked in a couple of white t-shirts I'd retrieved from the charity bag (not as white as they used to be) and gave them a new lease of life. Stitching sometimes doesn't dye but can look OK/good even so.

QueenCadbury · 31/03/2014 21:44

I'vejust been googling revlon backstage and it looks lovely. Is it quite similar to prohibition?

hoogervaaner · 31/03/2014 22:25

I need to delurk to say thank you very much for the Clinique Chubby Stick Pudgy Peony recommendation, I never wear lippy but this is fantastic and suits my Winter colouring perfectly. I will be wearing it with this top www.johnlewis.com/oasis-frill-shoulder-top/p1239352?colour=Dark%20Purple and a forest green/black jacket tomorrow :)

flipflopsam · 01/04/2014 10:36

It was me who recommended Revlon Backstage!

I have Prohibition too, and Prohibition is not a million miles away in colour but is definitely brighter. I find Backstage more wearable in the school playground - which is my main place for testing lipsticks Wink

pinkflaming0 · 01/04/2014 16:50

OOh - hoogervaaner - what's the sizing like on that top? Is it true to size? I like both the dark purple and navy.

SorrelForbes · 01/04/2014 19:59

Does this look like an ice blue or a pastel?

QueenCadbury · 01/04/2014 20:26

I'd say that quite icy sorrell as there doesn't seem to be any hint of warmth. Lovely top.

SorrelForbes · 01/04/2014 21:22

I dithered and didn't order it in the end but think I will have another look at it on-line tomorrow! I'm a bit worried that the neckline is a bit high for me.

hoogervaaner · 01/04/2014 21:41

pinkflaming0 - it is true to size for the 10 and the dark purple is really bright and vibrant Grin

angelinajelly · 02/04/2014 07:39

Thanks, QueenCadbury and MissScatterbrain. Maybe I should go back, but I'm not certain she'd be open-minded enough to come up with anything different.

It's not that I disagreed that the colours she picked as 2 star for me didn't work (they were fuchsia, two shades of purple, and charcoal grey). I just think that four colours looking good plus a load "maybe not right next to your face" doesn't make a match.
