Does anyone else not get bag love?

Right, Escargot, if I get trashed I'm blaming you Grin

Bags. Why?
Yes they hold your stuff and chocolate would melt if you kept it in your pocket. But Mulberry, Pashli, whatever, I'm sorry, they all look like something off Ashton market to me. Why, when there are so many lovely dresses and cakes in the world, do people get so giddy about them? Why all the gushing and the stroking? Thread after thread after thread....

It's not the price tags. I am all for spending money on beautiful things so please, no benches, holidays or new boilers. I don't even want to hear about your favourite charity. And bag lovers, please save your breath and your links; you have had plenty of chances to convert me and you have failed. I just want to hear from people who don't feel the luuurve.

Fabulous in what way? Do they do your work for you? Do they make the dinner?

FoxMulder · 24/01/2014 11:19

That's even better Aboutto. I am impressed.

I don't take a bag out if DH is with me, because if he has money & keys than I don't need them too.

GerundTheBehemoth · 24/01/2014 11:20

I don't get bag love at all, don't use a handbag ever. But I REALLY get rucksack love.

Aylish1993 · 24/01/2014 11:20

I LOVE bags!!!! I think it's because I'm a fatty so I no a bag will always fit ;) hahaha

Floisme · 24/01/2014 11:24

I'm not bothered about the cost - I've squandered money on all sorts of rubbish - it's just they're so ugly!

Escargot Yay - I don't get shoes either (except for boots which are a different matter, obviously).

A few years back I went to a party and found a bunch of women I'd never met before gushing over my dull but inoffensive BHS handbag. I was completely lost for words. I'm fairly certain it didn't look like anything a bag lover would lust after, but why would total strangers want to take the piss out of my bag?

Anyway, I've felt a bit suspicious about bag lovers ever since.

VenusDeWillendorf · 24/01/2014 11:26

I don't feel the lurve of a bag. I quite like the smell of leather and they look nice, like sweets, when all laid out in a shop I suppose.

I have a few different types, all cheap, as I do different things during the week, I work pt.
I have a shoulder bag, a crossover bag, a large stronger bag for work, and I have a few nylon shoppers, for my groceries.

The bags with the hardware, locks chains and heavy heavy leather seem like a lot of hard work, and pokey. Also the coloured bags do seem very short lived for the price.

My bags are navy- shoulder
Beige- a summer shoulder bag, hobo style.
Black work bag- heavy leather, like a satchel.
Dark red Cross body, saddle bag, but soft.
Don't have a clutch, but then I've no social life to speak of anyway!!

Someone gave me a pony skin brown bag with longish handles, and it's like a cave, and hairy! Every time I wear it, I feel like saying "I may be some time" when I go for my keys.

I've read that bags represent our wombs, and that shoes our fanjos!
Maybe there's a psychological element to bags and shoes!!
Wonder what that says about us practical ladies........

bunnymother · 24/01/2014 11:26

I love bags and animal print, but don't spend a lot (more than £150) on them. They are not diamonds, after all [goes misty eyed at thoughts of diamonds]

Floisme · 24/01/2014 11:29

Actually, I don't get diamonds either Bunnymother Just as well really ....

MrsWobble · 24/01/2014 11:29

a word of warning - I used to think like this - that people who spent stupid amounts on expensive bags had more money than sense. But as I got older (and admittedly wealthier) I have been sucked in. I began with a mulberry, got a radley and osprey and as they wear out/get tatty I replace them. My current favourites are Anya Hindmarch and Alexander McQueen which shows how far I've fallen. I've progressively spent increasing amounts - I still look at Gucci/Prada/hermes and think they are excessively expensive, only bought by those with more money than sense - but I am sure i'm only fooling myself and it's only a matter of time.

FunkyBoldRibena · 24/01/2014 11:32

I have pockets. And a rucksack. Does me.

VenusDeWillendorf · 24/01/2014 11:34

Here's an article on bags, wombs, bellies and breasts! this might interest Coo ergo missus.

bunnymother · 24/01/2014 11:35

Floisme you don't get diamonds, either? Really? I must admit that jewellery shopping gets my heart beating faster. A stroll through Grays Antiques is like a cardio work out. I must be like a poor, blonde version of Karen Walker from Will & Grace [shudder]

Ha ha MrsWobble you are on a slipper spending slope!!

acsec · 24/01/2014 11:35

I do NOT understand bag love, or shoe love for that matter!

I have a perfectly good brown leather bag which hold all the stuff I need and goes with all outfits. It is from when I went travelling and will not be replaced until it is worn out.

My DSIL and all my gfs sit around chatting about the latest Mulberry bag and my brain cells slowly die of boredom.

TortillasAndChocolate · 24/01/2014 11:38

I don't get it. I like to have a nice bag, it's not like I'd use a tesco bag instead. But I don't get excited over them. Maybe it's because I'm too poor Grin

bunnymother · 24/01/2014 11:39

Oh don't mention shoe love - I have that, too!

Although I don't spend much time talking about accessories, unless I am with others who love them and want to talk about them, too ie NOT DH.

Floisme · 24/01/2014 11:42

Bunnymother Nah, I'd rather have a couture frock than diamonds. Mind you, I've only ever seen them behind glass...

OP posts:
bunnymother · 24/01/2014 11:45

Oh. Couture. Oh. Well, that would be incredible, wouldn't it?! Truly wearable art. Imagine being Daphne Guinness and commissioning couture, whilst also wearing wonderful inherited diamonds?! Lovely. But if we can't have both, how about you have couture and I will have diamonds? Win win.

escargot · 24/01/2014 11:46

I daren't click on a link about wombs, bags, bellies and breasts Shock You do it flo and report back Grin

Off piste I don't like the word belly. I like tummy instead. Unless it's pork belly of course. Pork tummy is just plain weird.

BoJolly · 24/01/2014 11:48

I don't get bags & shoes BUT I love a nice purse and boots.

I don't really like wearing jewellery.

Floisme · 24/01/2014 11:54

Bunnymother right-oh it's a deal Grin

Escargot No you should look, here's a taster:
'You can think of bags as concrete meditations on the nature of human weight and shape.'
Marvellous, thanks, VenusDeWillendorf!

MadBusLady · 24/01/2014 11:58

Jewellery, me neither. LOVE a good pair of earrings but everything else feels weird and constricting. I don't wear a watch either, don't see the point.

bunnymother · 24/01/2014 12:01

[shakes hands with Floisme]

HelloBoys · 24/01/2014 12:02

I have some designer bags (presents or bought for me). they're Mulberry, Celine, Balenciaga and a Miu Miu evening bag (absolutely gorgeous a metallic drawstring one). oh and a Fendi small soft leather one. don't ask me what type/name they are. oh and a Chloe Paddington. all were bought for me by either a boyfriend or my aunt (who used to travel to Italy a lot) who is childless, rich and v generous! Grin

none of them scream labels and logos at me. I bought the Fendi one others were gifts.

If I were to buy a bag I'd have no idea what to look for. I also love my Whistles/Zara etc bags and go more on STYLE rather than what make they are.

FWIW the Mulbs with the huge logos in gold on them a friend of mine got v passable fakes from East End so I sort of laugh inwardly when I see people with the real ones as to me a fake (though not great ethically) of that is quite passable.

but then I just don't get the bag love I'm not ostentatious and labels never impress me.
