Does anyone else not get bag love?

Right, Escargot, if I get trashed I'm blaming you Grin

Bags. Why?
Yes they hold your stuff and chocolate would melt if you kept it in your pocket. But Mulberry, Pashli, whatever, I'm sorry, they all look like something off Ashton market to me. Why, when there are so many lovely dresses and cakes in the world, do people get so giddy about them? Why all the gushing and the stroking? Thread after thread after thread....

It's not the price tags. I am all for spending money on beautiful things so please, no benches, holidays or new boilers. I don't even want to hear about your favourite charity. And bag lovers, please save your breath and your links; you have had plenty of chances to convert me and you have failed. I just want to hear from people who don't feel the luuurve.

I hate bags too - and hate the fact that I have to have one... Due to the stoopid lack of pockets on most women's (smart) clothing.
I have pocket envy every morning when my DH secretes his wallet, phone, keys and spare change about his person Envy.

Wrt chocolate: Galaxy. Or Lindt. Or Milka. Never Cadbury's. Ever. Because it's vile.

GerundTheBehemoth · 26/01/2014 09:48

Cadbury's Dairy Milk doesn't seem to be as nice as it used to be. I would opt for the Lindt... though am looking forward very much to the arrival of a few things I ordered from the Hotel Chocolat 70% sale Grin

Floisme · 26/01/2014 10:58

Yes, more pockets would be good, although they might make my thighs look humungous. And, as I said at the start, where would my chocolate go?

Am a bit bemused that so many people think any old tatty handbag is as good as another. Off you go but it will drag down your appearance imo. Obviously lifestyles differ a lot also which no doubt will have an impact on bag buying too. A good looking bag also does not have to cost £££. M&S have done some v good knock offs of high end designs. Personally for a day bag it has to be leather at least which does up the price a fair bit.

And putting stuff in your pockets ruins the line of the clothes as you wear them and will often drag the material and over time ruin the clothes too.

SirChenjin · 26/01/2014 12:16

Drag down your appearance

Oh the shame Grin

PacificDogwood · 26/01/2014 12:26

I'll tell DH he's 'ruining the line' of his clothing Grin
I'm sure he'll be horrified. Not.

Floisme · 26/01/2014 12:45

wiltingfast if you are feeling bemused then welcome to our world. This thread is for fashion lovers who are nonetheless baffled as to why people go weak at the knees over a bit of quilting and a brass logo. It is a place in which to vent and have a giggle.

I love clothes and I do not object to bags because of the prices. I object because they are ugly.

Ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly.

Ooh that felt good Smile

wiltingfast · 26/01/2014 18:10

Men's clothes are much looser. Not such an issue. Can still ruin trousers though. My dh had a pair of cords and he ruined them carrying his wallet in the same pocket all the time. He was disgusted Grin.

Bags are not ugly !

bunnymother · 26/01/2014 18:54

Wilting is right - loading up pockets both ruins the line and the shape of the trousers - ask a tailor. Although some people (like my Dad) won't care.

Even if you don't love bags, how can you think they are ugly? I can understand indifference, but am a bit puzzled about aversion. I'm not bag mad , but I do like them.

PacificDogwood · 26/01/2014 18:59

I just don't like to lug something around with me.
I have a work-related (big) bag which I bought with my first ever salary 20+ years ago - it's been repaired a few times and I will probably need a new one before I retire when I am 75 the way things are going and I will miss it.
I don't want to need to have another bag for keys/wallet/phone etc.

When I am off I don't want a bad full stop. Whatever for??
There are bags I think are nice, but I don't want to carry them around with me IYSWIM.

Yes, bulky item ruin the line of tailored clothing, but that seems to matter more in women's clothes than men's.
And yes, heavy items can ruin pockets (DH seems to collect coins as he does not see change as 'money' Hmm).

Shoes, now, on the other hand, that's an entirely different story....

MadBusLady · 26/01/2014 19:02

That's the other thing, if you have a huuuuge bag like a tote or a slouchy one you become the default pack animal for every outing with men and/or children - water bottles, tissues, maps, tickets etc. You'll always find things you "need" to carry if you have room.

bunnymother · 26/01/2014 19:17

Oh I agree - I carry a medium sized bag as every single large bag I have had, I have filled to the brim and ended up with an aching back due to the insane weight of the thing.

Pacific - DH puts his coins in a coin jar every night, so he starts the next day, coin free. Well, I raided that jar and found an easy £30 in pound coins that I very easily frittered wisely spent the other week. Perhaps that's the solution for your DH?

PacificDogwood · 26/01/2014 19:18

Oh, I steal collect his coins all the time - pays for the kids' school dinners Grin

bunnymother · 26/01/2014 19:19

Don't let's start talking shoes - I could happily be here all night.

bunnymother · 26/01/2014 19:20

Boring, but I used the coin money for groceries. Christ, I couldn't get less exciting.

PacificDogwood · 26/01/2014 19:22

You could try spending it on school dinners - equally boring Wink.

Oh, I could start a shoe porn thread... Grin

MrsCharlieD · 26/01/2014 19:29

Oh wow. You would all hate me. I have a bag room. 10 mulberry, 15fendi, 1 chanel and then 1 or Karen2 Karen millen, gucci, prada, Louis vuitton, vivienne westwoo among others. I am currently trying to find a new home for them as my bag room is becoming a nursery. I am obsessed with bags and i have no shame about it Grin

bunnymother · 26/01/2014 19:29

Hmmm, needs musts re groceries and school dinners. Maybe next time I will buy cashmere lined gloves and handmade chocolates. Unlikely

Re shoes, Gianvito Rossi shoes look incredible. As, however, I live in the world of nursery fees and school diners etc, I just bought these taxi shoes from Zara. Ridiculously high, but gorgeous: www.zara.com/uk/en/new-collection/woman/shoes/criss-cross-high-heel-sandal-c358009p1669138.html

bunnymother · 26/01/2014 19:31

No one would hate you, CharlieD, it just seems some will be baffled / unmoved by your passion. Your collection sounds lovely.

Floisme · 26/01/2014 20:06

how can you think they are ugly?
Because this is my thread so I get to decide heh heh heh.

Bags can be ugly sometimes, i would absolutely agree. Especially if they are made of exotic skins or fur. There is nothing elegant about those, no matter what the brand or price tag!

squoosh · 26/01/2014 20:49

Those three bags you linked too are indeed vile. I agree that fur bags are never a good choice.

specialsubject · 26/01/2014 21:11

back a bit now, but re the question about pockets: I don't carry lipstick because I don't wear it, and don't use a diary - everything is run by a calendar on the wall. So no pen either.

purse/wallet is smaller than my hand, (lot easier now cheque books are gone!) keyring has four keys, phone is a dumbphone (is that right?) so is small and light. One of the many reasons I won't have a smartphone.

I do work from home so don't have to look smart and can wear trousers with pockets. It is winter so when I go out I'm wearing a decent jacket which has pockets. Summer is more of a problem, occasionally I do have to use a small shoulder bag about 10 cm x 20. Annoys me though.

Lavenderhoney · 26/01/2014 21:12

Escargot, I have bought a candle in the Laura Ashely sale. It is my first:) I thought of you:)

How do I stop it burning my table, in its glass holder thing? I also bought some floating candles so unless I put them in the bath, what do i need? Its a whole new world out there!

I worked in high end luxury fashion once, in finance, and after a while I found myself whittering about " cut" and " spoiling the line" and even " not in those shoes, darling" and I booked a massage before work before realising I was turning into Edina monsoon and got myself a job in the square mile pdq. The relief!!:)

scarlet76 · 27/01/2014 07:10

In my 20s I really loved good quality leather bags. I had lots of different styles and colours - work bags, weekend bags, going out bags etc... I could flick through fashion magazines and knew the name of every bag
Then I had children. Less time, less disposable income etc... And my bag love faded.
I now have an across body leather bag that I use for work and weekends. No more realising I've left my purse in another bag! I have a leather tote to carry work papers and files. And I have a large purse for going out.
