Does anyone else not get bag love?

Right, Escargot, if I get trashed I'm blaming you Grin

Bags. Why?
Yes they hold your stuff and chocolate would melt if you kept it in your pocket. But Mulberry, Pashli, whatever, I'm sorry, they all look like something off Ashton market to me. Why, when there are so many lovely dresses and cakes in the world, do people get so giddy about them? Why all the gushing and the stroking? Thread after thread after thread....

It's not the price tags. I am all for spending money on beautiful things so please, no benches, holidays or new boilers. I don't even want to hear about your favourite charity. And bag lovers, please save your breath and your links; you have had plenty of chances to convert me and you have failed. I just want to hear from people who don't feel the luuurve.

Stick a coaster under it lavender The floaty ones don't go in the bath Shock you'll burn yourself! Float them in a pretty shallow bowl instead.

Totally non-utilitarian but rather fab! Grin

Lavenderhoney · 27/01/2014 14:13

Escargot, I won't bathe with them:)

I don't have any coasters! I'll find something though. Looking forward to the first candle experience.

AgathaF · 27/01/2014 14:25

Wilting - nah! Couldn't see the fossil one but the others don't appeal in the slightest. Of my two handbags (plus an evening bag), my black one is a fossil. Tis nice leather. It functions.

squoosh · 27/01/2014 14:28

The Fossil one is ugly to me, I love the Sophie Hulme one however.

Floisme · 27/01/2014 14:29

wiltingfast I must refer you to the terms and conditions of the op:
'bag lovers, please save your breath and your links; you have had plenty of chances to convert me and you have failed.'

You are most welcome here but you have clicked at your peril Grin

Ah squoosh! I detect a crack!!!

heh heh...

I'd be forever linking Floisme, there's as many bags as there are tastes to buy them I think....

But AgathaF, a bag should never be merely functional, how dull! May as well use a supermarket jobby and be done with it!

zizzo · 27/01/2014 15:06

Hurray!!

I don't get the whole big deal around shoes either.

I spend what money I should be spending on bags and shoes on chocolate. And wine.

PacificDogwood · 27/01/2014 15:09

Nah, wiliting, much as the bags you linked to are far less offensive than the previous ones, I still don't want to have to lug one around all the time Grin.

Wrt pockets: I'd just like the option of pockets which I may chose to ignore if the 'line of my clothes' is important on the day. Which would be a rare event...

wilting, you are like a missionary amongst the savages Grin

Floisme · 27/01/2014 16:55

zizzo Welcome but I must warn you, we still are all about the clothes on this thread. I will however allow you chocolate (as long as it's not Dairy Milk).

wiltingfast and any other lurking bag lovers, these are especially for you:

Oh I do like Sophie Hulme bags. Simple and classical - no stupid tassels hanging out of them. The fuschia pink Sophie Hulme bag is lovely but I'll have to win the Lotto - and when I do, I'll hit Chanel, Bond Street too. Though I would find it hard to justify spending so much on a bag when there are people hungry and homeless in the world. And perhaps there is a little of ' the emperor's new clothes' about designer bags.

squoosh · 27/01/2014 17:56

Grin Grin Grin

That second 'Cripes' bag made me whoop! I'd imagine that's what Mrs Claus uses on her Christmas night out.

AgathaF · 27/01/2014 19:21

Floisme - where on earth did you dig those examples up from?????? Awful, hideous things.

Wilting you see, to me, that's exactly what a bag should be - functional. It's just something to carry stuff around in, if I need to carry stuff around. As long as it is a decent quality, leather bag, that's good enough for me. I don't need a fancy name or to endorse someone's brand. Wouldn't use a supermarket jobby though - I is much too classy for that Grin.

AgathaF · 27/01/2014 19:26

Something I've wondered about - did those of you who like bags, like to play with them as a child? Those of you who are not into bags - did you like the whole dress up with a handbag thing as a little girl? I didn't play at dressing up, handbags, borrowing mum's shoes to clop around in type stuff, and I'm not into that stuff now. Our DD loved to trot around with cloppy heels on and one of a vast assortment of handbags she acquired as a little girl, and she loves bags and shoes now. In fact we have just spend (in my view) a ridiculous amount of money on a Michael Kors one for her for Xmas, which she insisted was essential to her quality of life Hmm.

Lavenderhoney · 27/01/2014 20:33

I liked the Gucci bag:) the others were awful, like a Christmas arts and crafts gone very very wrong.

I didn't do dress up and stuff when little. My dm didn't have stuff like that.

I love it bags and shoes and stuff now, and enjoy spending my money on them. I hardly ever do though as I like them to last.

My friend in fashion wouldn't even walk down the street with an m&s carrier unless it was the food ones:)

PacificDogwood · 27/01/2014 20:36

Hm, interesting thought re the dressing up: I quite liked 'dressing up' as in a costume, but was/am not a girly girl and did not dress up in mum's shoes etc.

MarshaBrady · 27/01/2014 20:37

I do like bags. But simple ones. No bling.

I have discovered small ones because lugging toddler-related stuff and a huge bag gave me bag rage.

Now my dc are getting older and they don't need to be picked up I might switch back.

notyummy · 27/01/2014 20:38

I could have written that OP. I do love clothes and buy new ones regularly and like you OP I don't begrudge the cost at all. I just would get no pleasure spending that much on a bag when I could but some new items of clothing/night in a hotel/ m

wiltingfast · 27/01/2014 21:38

God almighty florisme, you are dragging all bag lovers into disrepute singlehandedly! The second one was so bad, my browser crashed! Grin

agathaf, there's no reason that something can't be beautiful as well as functional. I aim for that where feasible.

Have no memory of playing with bags as a child but I did like dress up and definitely did some clomping in mum's shoes. My 2yo dd loves bags and my jewellery. She's not so keen on dressing up.

I was at a party where my bag love was being dissed by some cheeky male bugger, I eventually found he was paying over £300 twice a year on... runners. Sheesh. At least I can sell a bag on ebay when I'm tired of it!

Floisme · 27/01/2014 23:14

Separated at birth.

Interesting question, AgathaF I certainly loved playing dressing up as a child and was obsessed with weddings. I was very disappointed when I found out my mum and dad were married as I had been banking on them for an invitation! I also vividly remember some of my mother's dresses e.g. the one she wore to pick me up after my first day at school. But I can't recall any handbags although I guess she must have had one.

Anyway I have some bad news: the fur Versace has been taken by the op from the faux fur coat thread - the colour is a perfect match Smile. Sorry everyone!

Hey Beeyump! Please stay.

Now then can anyone tell me if there is a Mumsnet bag? Shall I try and find one?
