Does anyone else not get bag love?

Right, Escargot, if I get trashed I'm blaming you Grin

Bags. Why?
Yes they hold your stuff and chocolate would melt if you kept it in your pocket. But Mulberry, Pashli, whatever, I'm sorry, they all look like something off Ashton market to me. Why, when there are so many lovely dresses and cakes in the world, do people get so giddy about them? Why all the gushing and the stroking? Thread after thread after thread....

It's not the price tags. I am all for spending money on beautiful things so please, no benches, holidays or new boilers. I don't even want to hear about your favourite charity. And bag lovers, please save your breath and your links; you have had plenty of chances to convert me and you have failed. I just want to hear from people who don't feel the luuurve.

I like bags but I'm also skint - TK Maxx is my friend. I buy one leather bag a year. I try to look for good quality leather that will polish up well so the bag will last and last. I agree that price doesn't always equal quality and will not pay a lot of money just for a label.

Catypillar · 25/01/2014 11:44

I'm not interested in bags like Mulberry, etc. I use a very nice rucksack that I got for Christmas from my parents if I need to carry a lot of stuff, and an oilcloth satchel (no brand) that my in laws got me for work. The oilcloth one is great as I can wash it with Dettol if I've been somewhere mucky. I put expensive bags in the same category as dark chocolate, fancying "distinguished older men", flashy cars and straightening your hair- I can see the appeal to other people but not of any interest to me...

Dark chocolate Shock How very dare you!

Just popping back cos I remembered something else I hate about them - the names!
Daphne
Pandora
Miranda
Lara
Nancy
April
Marcie
No, no, no, no, no!
Yes, I know you get it everywhere now but it annoys me most when it's a bag so there. And anyway I bet the bags started it Grin

For years I tried to like dark chocolate as that's what grown ups are supposed to prefer. Such a relief when I finally admitted to myself that I actually find it quite horrible and have stuck to Dairy Milk since then.

MadBusLady · 25/01/2014 15:07

Yy, Green & Black's is particularly grim. And if you try and tell people this, they give you a lecture about how you've got to let it melt under your tongue. Tried that, it just tastes like something grim melting under your tongue.

LittleBabyPigsus · 25/01/2014 17:21

Shock at preferring the over-sweet bilge of Dairy Milk to heavenly dark chocolate

Even the cheapest dark choc is much nicer than the cheapest milk choc.

squoosh · 25/01/2014 17:25

I prefer G&B milk to G&B dark but I prefer G&B dark to Dairy Milk.

Floisme · 25/01/2014 18:08

Dairy Milk is like a cup of tea with seven sugars. It is the confectionery equivalent of this: www.net-a-porter.com/product/410257

So does anyone have links for mid price non poncy but good quailty bags for all seasons then? The Mumsnet bag perhaps?

Stinklebell · 25/01/2014 18:37

No, I'm not a bag fan ether.

I don't carry a handbag as a rule, if it can't fit in my pocket, I don't take it.

It's not a designer/expensive/money thing, I'm not averse to big spends, I just don't do bags.

specialsubject · 25/01/2014 19:40

hate handbags, bloody stupid frippery, prefer clothes with pockets. Small simple phone, keys, wallet/purse. What else should I be carting about when I leave the house?

bunnymother · 25/01/2014 19:55

You must have some big sensible pockets to fit all of that, specialsubject! To your list I would add lipstick, diary and pen and chocolate

Lonelynessie · 25/01/2014 20:11

I'm not really in to bags. Lugging things around annoy me. But shoes, I can never have too many pairs of shoes.

hollyisalovelyname · 25/01/2014 20:15

Love ' like it's the Sistine Chapel of handbags' Smile

ToysRLuv · 25/01/2014 20:18

I used to pretend I liked the dark stuff too, but dark chocolate is mostly too bitter. The cheaper and more "plastic" the milk chocolate, the better. Dairy milk is too creamy/heavy. I like Marabou or non-brand choc made in China (or thereabouts).

Does nobody else like backpacks (if a bag is required)? Definitely the most ergonomical option.

ToysRLuv · 25/01/2014 20:20

TBH, mostly when I go out, I just take wallet (or just loose money/cards) and keys. Not even my phone (DH despairs), so mostly no need for a bag.

ToysRLuv · 25/01/2014 20:21

I found an original Louis Vuitton hand bag in my DGP's bacement. I was most annoyed that it had been ruined by mould. It could have made me a pretty penny!

Catypillar · 25/01/2014 21:02

Cup of tea with seven sugars sounds good to me... I'm Scottish and I eat lots of tablet, and occasionally even a deep fried Mars Bar (presume you dark chocolate-loving weirdos prefer deep fried G+B Maya Gold though)

MadBusLady · 25/01/2014 21:11

Mmmm tablet.

Might make some Guinness cake tomorrow...

LittleBabyPigsus · 25/01/2014 22:47

clippityclop not a specific bag but TK Maxx are great for bag bargains. Go for real leather and you're sorted. I also like Orla Kiely designs, not sure if that's considered mid-range or not!

My current bag was £8 in H&M btw Blush

Turquoiseblue · 26/01/2014 08:19

I like bags, price point or label, doesn't matter (well I can't afford £££££ etc) I just like a nice bag, different ones for different occasions - not pushed on trends, just ones IMHO that slot into my wardrobe and life and budget. I couldn't do just one bag, different days I need more or less space and different looks - days with kids I need a cross body multi pocket, 'snack, wipes and Lego bits holder' - I just like things to be 'nice' ...according to me. I like the way bags finish off a look or outfit. Not too bothered what anyone thinks about it being this season or last decades style. Even my gym bag was a considered decision!!!!
I love dark chocolate Grin... And dairy milk and bags still fit when I indulge in those.
Shoes though ....meh they cover your feet ...... Couple of outfit appropriate in differing colours and off you go.
Each to their own. Grin

GerundTheBehemoth · 26/01/2014 09:24

Toys - I love backpacks/rucksacks. Comfortable and keeps hands free. I have two (one little, one big) for shopping/general everyday use, big one with padded bits inside for lugging my camera gear around, a couple of special ones for running, and one that turns into a chair for when I do sketching/painting outside.

Going out for an evening, I try to fit keys/phone/money into coat or jeans pockets. If for some reason I need other stuff, I'll take a rucksack.

And I like milk chocolate but not dark Grin

Matsikula · 26/01/2014 09:25

Catypillar - I am not with you on the dark chocolate, but I do think there is something in your 'fancying older men' hypothesis.

I can appreciate a nice bag but can't bring must to fork out for them as as a youngster I always thought handbags were for the prematurely middle-aged - people desperate to jump into adulthood with all the trappings rather than enjoy a misspent youth.

So now even though I am nearly middle-aged myself, the only bag I have bought in the last 2 years is a beautiful rucksack. I probably do need a new black handbag for work though (sigh).

overthemill · 26/01/2014 09:29

One bag at a time , lasts me say 5 years then when it's too shabby but another one. Spent £125 on one from Hobbs in 2006 that I sometimes use if need one big enough for book as well as purse keys and notebook as it was my 'work' bag when I commuted. But I still feel sick at how much it cost.
