Me too, PottedPlant. I have black lashes, so I am bogged if I am going to paint them brown...

Am now off to look at non-HOC definitions of autumn colours to see if there is anything I fancy elsewhere...

Hopefully · 12/11/2013 15:28

Hello!

Re the colour swatches, I would say that what that palette calls 'aubergine' I would call dark burgundy. The colour I think of as aubergine is closer to the colour of an actual aubergine - darker, a bit more purpley and a bit more murky, rather than so red and clear, iykwim? But it's not far off. Interestingly, what it calls maroon is closer to an autumn colour to my mind - it looks like a dark rust colour on my monitor. Maybe a fraction pinky, but would probably tone in well with other autumn colours. Hard to say for certain with either as monitors vary though.

And of the other swatches, the teal is definitely autumn, and if you mixed the teal and navy you'd have 'our' navy, the marine/petrol navy. All the other colours look summer/winter to me. French navy is navy with a bit of grey added, incidentally.

Really need some maternity workwear, it's getting a bit dire here!

ASmittenKitten · 12/11/2013 20:54

Thanks Hopefully - I knew you'd make sense of it. I find it easier seeing the colours which I'm not than the colours which I might be and find marine/petrol navy very tricky. If you ever see something in it, would you be ever so lovely and link to it.................

Pottedplant have you tried mascara just on the top of the lower lashes,by the base?Think it was estee lauder who originally done it to me.I just literally kinda 'smudge' the wand into the base of lower lashes,on the outer half, and quickly remove anything that goes further down them.Accentuates a nice shape, opening the eyes up,without being obvious in the slightest.

Looks even better with a tiny bit of shadow applied as a light liner under the same lashes

evelynj · 12/11/2013 21:33

Triptrap-Like the lower lashes tip, thanks.

Potted-sorry I meant brown/black mascara-you can get max factor stuff on eBay for less than boots. Sorry, it must have been someone else who had self diagnosed.

I'm on the lookout for some cheapy autumn pjs & dressing gown if anyone spies anything, (plan to spend a lot of winter in comfies & just noticed my new electric throwover is dark brown-one of my **!) .

Do most people stick to the rough palette just generally or do people try to stick to their ratings, e.g. Only wearing one star or higher rated colours on top half? I don't think I could get to the stage where I find something in my style in an autumn colour that just makes up 25% of an outfit!

Hopefully · 13/11/2013 14:24

this, while not remotely relevant for most people on this thread, is a great example of marine/petrol navy. It can even be a bit less teal than that and still be ok though.

Evenlyn I'm a consultant and even I don't obsess about my ratings! If it's something like a scarf which is going to be seen all the time when i'm out and about I won't get it in something like beige, which is singularly unexciting on me, and if I'm looking for an evening dress I'll try to find one in forest green/navy/kingfisher/chestnut etc, but beyond that I don't obsess over it too much.

Hopefully · 13/11/2013 14:26

Meant to add, the ratings are a great place to start in terms of buying tops/scarves in good colours, and for big investment pieces like coats/evening dresses, but don't worry too much about them for every day dressing - I don't know about you but it's rare that i wear a solid colour top without a cardigan/scarf to break it up anyway, so it's rare that something is as starkly next to my face as it is when we're doing it with drapes.

Which is not to say I don't value the ratings process, I think it's brilliant, and really gives a great place to start and shows where you can push the boundaries a bit. It's just not something to get too stressed about. Remember, ALL your colours are good on you, just some are more amazing than others.

Cocochops · 13/11/2013 16:20

I have been a bit absent on this thread just catching up now. Congrats hopefully on the pregnancy.

Right two questions

  1. where do you recommend for autumn coloured tights?
  2. please help me make a decision so I actually buy a pair of boots this side of Xmas!

I think I am having trouble deciding as I want something that looks equally good with trousers and skirts and something quite comfortable to walk a fair distance in. So maybe I am looking for a boot that does everything but actually need two pairs?!
Anyway here are my contenders so far

office I think charity recommended these. Like them tried one on once but worried they are too low to wear with skinny jeans

next these are childrens quite like them do they look like children's?

dune really like these I know they are black

dune biker think I like these?!

clarks not sure anymore

Clarks link not working but they are the Majorca spirit in brown

Snowbility · 13/11/2013 17:23

Coco have just bought some fabulous dark brown bamboo knitted tights from Tesco for £5. They are perfect! Asda also sells a great brown in a smoother style, M&S brown opaques have too much orange in them.

FizzyFeet · 13/11/2013 21:37

John Lewis is also good for tights - got a couple of proper dark chocolate ones in there. Lovely material too.

Coco, I'm in a state of paralysis about boots too! Currently in denial and sticking with my knee highs.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a simple dark brown knee-length or above-the-knee skirt? A-line or pencil would be fine; cord or cotton would be best (can't wear wool).

I know lots of stylish women say that you should only buy things that you love, not just because they are useful, but they probably don't have a bunch of perfect colour tops and nothing to wear them with!

Jemster · 13/11/2013 21:52

Hi there
I need a pair of brown trousers for work. Could anyone suggest any please? I bought some lovely ones from Next but as soon as I tried on I felt they irritated my skin due to the wool in them. Sainsburys have some but they are tapered style which I don't think would suit my pear shape. I really need some soon as my only pair for work are too big and black.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 13/11/2013 22:53

FizzyFeet Fat Face had a lineish brown cord skirts in,think some plain and one with a light, tiny pattern on.

evelynj · 14/11/2013 09:19

Thanks hopefully, that's reassuring!

Coco-love the dune boots, they're great. I saw some good Clarks ones in a Clarks outlet that were lovely but saw someone getting the last. Pair in my size, boo!

Jemster-I always think m&s are good for brown work trousers.

I went into peacocks yest to look for the dress I linked but they didn't have it. They did however have some plain long sleeved tees in rusty brown, teal & a few other autumn colours.

May pop to asda for some tights!

Justinepants · 14/11/2013 22:15

Evening
An as-yet-undiagnosed-but-probably-Autumn here (waiting for my colour day but the friends I'm doing it with couldn't manage a day before Christmas. Sad I'm so impatient to be done!)

Just popping in to mention a fab olive green leather skirt I've spotted on ebay. Sadly it's very small so no good for me, leather skirt. With a starting price of £10 or a BIN or £20, I thought someone might fancy a slightly quirky bargain.

I shall carry on looking for something more size 14 friendly...

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/11/2013 22:29

Ok,I've kinda caved and am having colours done by a non hoc consultant who is a friend of a friend! And I'm not paying a penny! Smile

So,currently going with being an autumn at the mo (quite possibly am,or something cool lol),so I can make things easier if diagnosed as such..

How do autumns work with greys? What kind of grey is best?Want a grey coat!

Meganhunt · 14/11/2013 22:31

Haven't been on for a while but have been reading! I'm looking for a red scarf/snood and unsure what is best for my Dark Blue Autumn colouring. I've seen: www.johnlewis.com/nw3-by-hobbs-macaroni-snood/p855460?colour=Cherry Red and www.johnlewis.com/jigsaw-alpine-knit-scarf/p715090?colour=Wine. TIA

Meganhunt · 14/11/2013 23:04

TripTrap - I think PP have explained the grey thing before. I do wear a dark grey as it is a favourite of mine and it doesn't look awful but isn't really an autumn colour. Better than black anyway. If you have lots of autumn colours in your wardrobe it might be a struggle to match/tone grey with it..iyswim.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/11/2013 23:12

Thanks Megan I thought that may be the case.Coats are so hard though-can't do black, navy isn't right, don't like khaki and am fussy with brown lol love colour but need something that can be worn with most things aswell as being all that I want.

All I've found is 'storm grey'

Meganhunt · 14/11/2013 23:26

TripTrap - I probably shouldn't be giving advice (LOL) but I tend to go for my navy or camal coat. Now my hair/makeup and clothes are mostly autumn you tend to get away with not sticking to your colours completely - or so I tell myself!

Re my scarf search - am I on the right track with this Mulberry scarf: www.mulberry.com/shop/accessories/scarves-hats-gloves/tamara-scarf-bright-red-superfine-cotton. I find the description of colours different to what I see on my screen.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/11/2013 23:40

I'd say so Megan.And that's a lovely scarf!!!

I wear navy, but in open v-neck cardies. As I'm so pale if it gets closer to my face it tends to look odd.A lot of colours do really, but I tend to have open cardies or lower necklines so it doesn't look so harsh against my face lol

It really told me something the other day though when I was watching my face in the changing room, intently,to spot and differences with colours I was trying on.As soon as I took the clothes I was already wearing off (navy and a darkish purple) my face glowed and looked better with me just stood in my underwear!!!!!

shopafrolic · 16/11/2013 13:05

Just nipping in to show you these two lovely looking scarves in case they suit any of you
tartan oversized scarf
rust checked scarf

jennimoo · 16/11/2013 14:53

Just seen this dress, is it autumn do you think?

And I bought some maybelline super stay gloss in the coral colour but it looks very pink on but I'm not used to anything on my lips so might just be struggling to get used to colour at all. Has anyone seen / used this? It stays put quite well though.

evelynj · 16/11/2013 14:54

Shop-they're both great!

I found some lovely bits & especially maternity stuff too in the esprit sale
