HoC Autumns

Thought I'd start a thread for autumns as the spring and winters threads seem busy and I feel I'm missing out!

I'm an autumn leaf and going for the style day soon. I haven't bought much this year as only had colours done a couple of months ago and waiting to discover my style before spending. I have been decluttering my wardrobe quite ruthlessly as I had a lot of the wrong colours/tatty clothes.

I did buy some Kettlewell tops and have had a few compliments so I certainly believe that colour analysis works.

Unfortunately my autumn/winter coats are black but expensive so I won't be replacing them for at least a couple of years.

Any suggestions for colourful hats/scarves/gloves to lift the black? High street brands please as I can't get parcels delivered to home.

I think my problem is that I've not done the style day yet. I'm really quite a plain person, no frills or fuss to my clothing. When I first met my husband his exact words were "Autumn, one of the things I love about you is that you're so plain and simple" Hmm Luckily for him I knew what he was getting at Grin

Sometimes I think I want to mix things up a little, but after having my colours done I'm determined to make every purchase count and it's kind of tying me up in knots when I'm trying to make decisions!

I was wondering for those of you who did the style day, did it take things to the next level for you? I'm not sure how HoC could really expand mine for me. I don't wear jewellery, (except for my watch and wedding ring) I don't wear scarves unless it's with my winter coat. I mainly live in trousers and simple fitted tops, and to be honest I have a button phobia going on which drives a lot of this Blush I'd run screaming for the hills from a pearly king and queen

I have never had my colours done. I'm a personal stylist so always knew why some colours looked good on some people and bad on others.

Rules · 07/10/2013 14:08

sorry...didn't mean that to sound boasty...Sad just meant that I worked out that peoples own colouring worked better with some colours than with others. Smile

snowlie · 07/10/2013 14:16

Autumn why don't you wear scarfs and necklaces etc. Are they uncomfortable or do you feel they are not you?

AutumnLeafMyArse · 07/10/2013 14:16

I didn't read it as boasty Rules Smile

AutumnLeafMyArse · 07/10/2013 14:24

Snowlie I find necklaces uncomfortable to be honest. It's a bit harder to explain the scarfs. Although I'm petite short arsed (5ft 2, size 10) I've got quite broad, square shoulders and they just don't seem to sit on me properly, like the scarf is wearing me rather than me wearing it IYKWIM? Which is such a shame because they would be a very easy way of introducing a third colour into my outfits. I don't want to always wear jeans, tshirt and cardi combos. It's one of the reasons I thought I should try the style day, maybe they could give me other options or at least tell me the "right" way to wear a scarf?

snowlie · 07/10/2013 14:28

Would a scarf in a similar tone to your top make you feel the same way? Maybe a patterned top might help at interest with a very simple necklace.

AutumnLeafMyArse · 07/10/2013 14:45

My holy grail, an autumnal patterned top. I really need a fitted one as I'm an hour-glass sort of shape, I live in stretchy tops (fitted, not clingy). Anything other than that adds about half a stone to me and looks boxy. But patterned and fitted usually means a blouse or shirt with ................ buttons Blush (I must sound like a loon, I'm not, promise).

I love the print on this but I think it could make me look boxy. I could just about cope with the buttons on the back as I wouldn't have to look at them and my husband would have to do them up. Maybe I should give it a go, I may get a pleasant surprise. I need to find something in the next week, we've got a family dinner planned for my mum's 70th.

One of the things we cover on the style day is the scale of accessories you need, and how 'neat' they need to be, so working out that, for example, you need very small neat scarves, or big statement ones, can really make a difference. I never thought I could wear scarves, then discovered that the problem was that 99% of scarves aren't big enough and statement and messy enough for me.

That top is really pretty Autumn. I have so few patterned tops - again it's to do with the scale I need, there is hardly anything out there for me!

snowlie · 07/10/2013 15:19

Autumn Sounds like a style day would help you uncover something that would work for you - you sound like you know what you don't like but struggle to find what you like. You could do it through trial and error but it would be a lot easier and quicker to just bite the bullet and go for the style day.

jeanvaljean · 07/10/2013 15:25

Hopefully - what determines how big of a statement you would need? Is it in proportion to your frame for example? Big scarf for a big person?

Thanks for the tip up thread on the workbook btw - I had never looked at the pages. Can't believe there was all that info in there that I missed!

charitygirl · 07/10/2013 17:33

The style day, amongst other things, gave me permission to ignore 'must have' items that I had never felt comfortable in - Breton stripes, A line skirts, chunky knits (latter in pArticular being something I love in theory, have bought lots of, but never worn as they really make me look lumpen).

Also v useful 'rules' eg I need structure up top (so no draping, loose tops), and although I need loose, low-ish necklines, I also look best with something across the collarbone - necklace or scarf. All things I hadn't identified, but which feel very me, stylish, sharp.

I'm an ingenue natural (tho I can't do small 'ingenue' patterns and details - it's mre about adding a bit of prettiness to my relaxed, layered natural look). Well worth the cost.

Jemster · 07/10/2013 17:40

Hi there
I wore my new teal blouse to work today but somehow it didn't feel right. It is quite a dark but bright teal. I am making a real effort to find and buy clothes in the right colours now as I know how much better than can make someone look. Believe me I need all the help I can get as I'm shattered from night waking dd and I look rough lol!!
I wore the blouse with a scarf with bits of various autumnal colours in but I felt slightly like an air hostess or like something my mother would wear!!
Also no-one paid me a compliment which I was hoping might happen if I got the colour right. DH just said oh that's a new shirt. Don't think he was keen.

How do I get this colour thing right? I am trying but it doesn't come naturally to me at all!

RockMummy · 07/10/2013 18:06

Jemster, what did you wear on your bottom half?

Jemster · 07/10/2013 18:09

RockMummy dare I say it, black trousers! They're the only work trousers I have at the mo and budget is very limited for any more.

charitygirl · 07/10/2013 18:09

Jemster - it sounds like you would really benefit from the style day. If you're wearing you're right colours but it still feels wrong, then maybe you need to look at the type of clothes - certainly before you spend any more money on new things that you're not happy with.

RockMummy · 07/10/2013 18:18

Obviously I'm not able to see how it looked Jemster but could the black have reduced the impact of the teal top? I understand the budget thing and how hard it is to find the correct colours. Trousers in various shades of brown are really tricky to find especially at a good price. Have you thought about olive/khaki ?

Jemster · 07/10/2013 18:28

Charitygirl that makes sense, I think maybe it was the blouse itself that didn't flatter me. Luckily it was cheap from Primark! I wonder if I could look up the style thing online as I can't afford the style day? I am petite 5'3, small waist, bigger hips and still a bit of a mummy tummy.

mrsharrystyles · 07/10/2013 18:36

Hi, can I join your thread?
I've been diagnosed today as a soft autumn. I was completely surprised, I thought I would be spring.
I had such a good day with my three friends. We were all surprised at our results.
My head is spinning at the moment with all the info. Any good recommendations for make up colours and where to shop for clothes?

Hopefully · 07/10/2013 18:41

jem doing a true style analysis online is completely impossible as it is dependent on your personality and how you view yourself and others as well as body shape. Saying that, you may pick up a few new ideas by looking around for ideas for your body shape.

Hopefully · 07/10/2013 18:42

Wow mrsharry that is quite a difference from Spring! My best friend is a soft autumn, it is so elegant and Gucci-esque.

HoleyCow · 07/10/2013 19:02

Hopefully - is there a website you can send me to that "illustrates" the colour combos you very helpfully provided upthread. I think I would do better by actually seeing the colours together than trying to imagine them together. I have very, very little imagination Thanks

mrsharrystyles · 07/10/2013 19:07

Hopefully, do you know what lippy she wears, or where she gets her clothes? I hadn't thought of them as elegant colours, but I suppose they are.

QueenofWhatever · 07/10/2013 19:14

charitygirl has hit it on the head by saying it gives you permission to ignore the must haves. In my case, maxi dresses, roll neck jumpers and shirts. It feels like such a relief to know I don't have to even think about these things anymore. The naysayers would say this is due to a lack of confidence, but I think it's more subtle and realising why some things just don't feel right, and some make you feel safe and cosy.

And as hopefully says, it's very much about personality. I'm introverted but not quiet - I want to look 'interesting' but not to stand out. My lifestyle is also low key, and my clothes need to reflect that.

Charitygirl, I'm also an ingenue natural - are you on Pinterest?

GeorginaWorsley · 07/10/2013 19:45

Agree it could have been the black trousers that 'upset' the outfit,Jemster.
Perhaps the trousers were too much of contrast with autumnal scarf?
I think teal can work with black, but to me it's more of an evening look.
Do u have navy trousers?
