Thought I'd start a thread for autumns as the spring and winters threads seem busy and I feel I'm missing out!

I'm an autumn leaf and going for the style day soon. I haven't bought much this year as only had colours done a couple of months ago and waiting to discover my style before spending. I have been decluttering my wardrobe quite ruthlessly as I had a lot of the wrong colours/tatty clothes.

I did buy some Kettlewell tops and have had a few compliments so I certainly believe that colour analysis works.

Unfortunately my autumn/winter coats are black but expensive so I won't be replacing them for at least a couple of years.

Any suggestions for colourful hats/scarves/gloves to lift the black? High street brands please as I can't get parcels delivered to home.

Charitygirl I too hate the Joules country-living aspirational thing, but I am a total sucker for a tweed jacket. It just works for me - shape, texture, etc. I'm less of a fan of the fur collar thing (clashes with my massive mane of uncontrollable frizz), but that's detachable (collar, not frizz sadly) so I'm thinking it'd be really versatile.

Bugger about the parsnippy leggings though. Have you tried them with ruched long-sleeved tee shirts a la Baukjen? I always find that removes any hint of parsnip-itis.

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 10:33

Meh, you are right CG. I had not noticed the zip. Grr. If anyone sees a chocolate / tan leather skirt pleeeaaase link :)

Hopefully · 26/09/2013 10:47

Wombat I was going to say the skirt looked good, but it is positively burgundy in the last picture, and if it describes itself as wine that's probably the most accurate pic. Will keep an eye out for the perfect skirt.

I'm getting loads of inspiration from this thread too - I'm actually plotting a bit of a wardrobe clear out tomorrow when i've tried on my new clothes, as I need to work out where the gaps still are - I refuse to limp through this winter on the piddly little capsule wardrobe which saw me through the summer!

Charity the detachable collar means it's going to be a useful jacket, IMO.

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 18:13

Here is a lovely bronzey Jack Wills blouse

In other news, I have ebayed 3 jackets that I barely wear thanks to this thread. With the proceeds I'm planning to get new crutches to go with my autumn wardrobe! I have mobility issues and crutches feature rather heavily in my life, but the NHS only do them in a disappointingly summery pale grey. So if you were me, would you go for

fire engine red

Or save up for

bet lynch style leopard print

Any thoughts?

MelanieCheeks · 26/09/2013 18:14

I wore this gold jaegar dress to a meeting today and got lots of compliments. I had dressed it down with a cream cardi and tan flats, but was always wearing a bronze leather blazer which I've had for yonks but still looks good.

I am going to have a look at these so called dresses ( for me they are long tops as im tall, rather like the Baukjen ones recommended above) but these are cotton with a little elastin to give that bit of "fit" and of course, much cheaper. I think I will get them in most colours if I like them as they will be my basics. Has anyone tried them?

Wombat when I go on your Bet Lynch style leopard print I get redirected to a walking stick??? Is it just me .....lol!

Rules · 26/09/2013 21:00

O sorry, silly me.....didn't read it correctly. But cant see the Bet Lynch style walking stick. I have a blue fold up one for when im hill walking, just in case in need support on those big hills.

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 21:13

Sorry Rules which dresses do you mean? Have I missed a post somewhere..where are they from? I am tall-ish and long bodied and always on the hunt for long tops or short dresses I can wear as tops! :)

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 21:15

Ah well - was supposed to be a link of red crutches or leopard crutches - not sure why the link didn't work. I am not sure if bright crutches is really a good look, maybe I should go off piste and get some sophisticated black!

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 21:19

Melanie that Jaeger dress is gorgeous. So nice to get compliments, how exciting!

Depressingly I don't get many compliments at work - and the last time I did, I was wearing a black dress - totally un-autumnal! It threw me for a bit because I know black really does look awful on me unless I have a proper tan.

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 21:28

Wombat - I am a leopard print addict so have to recommend that option, thought they might feel like a big accessory that you're stuck with, rather than ones which can fade into the background.

So these trousers are going back

Good fit really but the deal breaker was the couloir. Guttingly, me and Ems neutral green this winter is not autumn! I think it's really really dark emerald. Doesn't look right with my autumn clothes. Sob. But! On bright side, £135 saved!

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 21:31

Lol at couloir. Oh so important.

Rules · 26/09/2013 21:31

Wombat did my link in my post two above yours not work?? Sorry if it didn't. Its there on my thread. Let me know please Smile

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 21:41

Doh Rules I am sorry my phone obviously doesn't read pictures. I like the look of that picture, where is it from? I am a big fan of tops like that.

Much as I love Me and Em things, at £135 for posh scratchy leggings CharityGirl I think you've had a lucky escape! Will keep eyes peeled for substantial, stretchy leggingy treggingy types.

Jemster · 26/09/2013 21:48

Hi
This is my first post but have been following the thread to get some ideas. I am starting again from scratch with my wardrobe as much if it I can't fit into after second child and there is far too much black & navy which frankly make me look ill!!

I don't have much spare money for clothes. Today I bought a teal blouse from Primark and a fairly bright green jumper from H&m. Both seemed very close to my swatch colours but what do I put with them now? The teal blouse for work does suit me but it's so bland by itself with black trousers. What can I put with it?

I find the whole colour thing very difficult. I might see something and think that's one of my colours but then I may not look good in it as I don't know how to put things together.

Any advice greatly appreciated please as I really want to improve how I look.

Rules · 26/09/2013 21:54

They are from H & M Wombat. They are listed as a dress but for me, they will be a long top. They look similar to the Baukjen ones but for a fraction of the price and the Baukjen ones are viscose and the H & M ones are cotton with elastin. The reviews for the Baukjen long tops were not that good so will go in and see these.

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 22:03

Welcome Jemster :) congratulations on your autumnal purchases. Love the sound of a teal blouse, what kind of fabric is it? I think teal looks great with mid-brown - imagine with a brown leather skirt (there it is again, my current heart's desire), or with rust or brown skinnies. Quite often to pull it together you can add other items - a skinny belt in a contrast colour (kingfisher blue or even heliotrope or mustard to give it an 'almost clashing' feel. Makes it feel a bit more modern, and less 1990s turquoise/brown.

I also find fine gold chains look great against autumn hues - you could go for something more statementy and trendy though if it suited you!

I find work trousers quite difficult - haven't found any formal brown ones yet, am constantly on the hunt for wide-legged brown trousers a la Katherine Hepburn. I have black trousers, I would wear a teal top with them and soften the contrast a bit with some interesting texture - a scarf, a bracelet - even 'almost matching' teal nail polish would be good!

I found it really useful to pull my wardrobe apart and spend an afternoon putting different things together - trying out colour schemes that I hadn't thought of before. Include accessories like shoes and bags and scarves etc when you look at it all, because sometimes they can make all the difference.

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 22:03

Ooh excited to hear this rules let me know how you get on!

Rules · 26/09/2013 22:10

I will Wombat I love a bargin and love long tops as being tall I can never get them long enough Grin
Welcom Jemster. Im still working on my colours too. I have warm honey blond hair and dark green eyes with lots of freckles. I had never tried red before and today I put tomato red against me and WOW!!!! it was amazing. My skin and eyes and hair just look perfect. So I need to go and buy some red as I have not one piece of it in my house. Wonder why I never saw that it suited me before .

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 22:32

I agree with wombat - teal looks good with most browns (and surprisingly so at the chestnut end of the spectrum) and I also love it with tomato red - this summer I wore a long teal vest with a tomato tube skirt. At the moment I'm wearing teal with purple (tights) and chartreuse (cardigan).

Remember - as wombat said above - the rule of threes. Two autumn colours together - fine. Three - great! Third could be your shoes, scarf, lipstick.

Can I recommend - again - this dress
www.riverisland.com/women/dresses/midi-dresses/Purple-split-hem-column-dress-642737

Bargain price, great shape if you're at all curvy, and not too thin - and with sleeves. Match it with autumn tights, gold jewellery in a style which suits you, and you're all set. Now it's reduced I've bought it in orange and teal (annoyingly not online) too. It's going to be my winter work uniform!

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 22:33

Heheh at '90s turquoise/brown'. Yes' I live in fear of looking like a statement wall!

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 22:34

Oops 'not too thin' above refers to dress material - not suggesting the dress wouldn't look good on the curvy!

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 22:35

On the THIN ffs!

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 22:44

Lol CharityGirl that is exactly what I dread! I am loving the idea of teal purple and chartreuse/mustard, I wi attempt similar tomorrow.

If you are at all interested in colour (couloir? Arf) combinations, take a good look at this blog colour makes people. The blogger is hilariously bonkers but in a very engaging way and her style is not at all vogue-y, but her sense of colour is amazing. She doesn't wear a lot of autumn-y shades but looking at her outfits gave me confidence to be more imaginative with colour.
