HoC Autumns

Thought I'd start a thread for autumns as the spring and winters threads seem busy and I feel I'm missing out!

I'm an autumn leaf and going for the style day soon. I haven't bought much this year as only had colours done a couple of months ago and waiting to discover my style before spending. I have been decluttering my wardrobe quite ruthlessly as I had a lot of the wrong colours/tatty clothes.

I did buy some Kettlewell tops and have had a few compliments so I certainly believe that colour analysis works.

Unfortunately my autumn/winter coats are black but expensive so I won't be replacing them for at least a couple of years.

Any suggestions for colourful hats/scarves/gloves to lift the black? High street brands please as I can't get parcels delivered to home.

I've got a Uniqlo merino jumper in a very flattering .
Coats wise iv got
Plum velvet Boden coat from few years ago, still very wearable.
Black faux fur coat
Black leather sleeved biker coat
Navy waxed or coated biker jacket from Marks last yearlove it
Hooded chocolate waxed parka from Marks this season, looks great
Two leather jackets, one cream one black.

I find I can wear black better if its a 'rich'fabric ,is leather, fur, coated, etc rather than flat black,if that makes sense
Also intend to wear scarves in more autumnal colours with the black,Ifyswim

snowlie · 25/09/2013 17:20

Thanks wombat Merino uniqlo are very fine - think quality cotton t shirt thickness - almost like a top, rather than a jumper, you could get away with one of their heat tech long sleeve tops underneath but not much else. I think arm length is fine, I have long arms too, will check again later, colours are lovely though.

Will try the Barbara daly lip balm, I'm struggling with a day time lipstick, I like a plum shade normally but that's not autumn, don't like orange or brown shades....just the red and that's more suited to night time.

BridgeMix · 25/09/2013 19:21

I think autumnal scarves may be the way forward with coats...
I'd like some skinny jeans/cords in rust or caramel... superdry sold out and uniqlo sold out in my size... anyone seen any anywhere?

ChickenLickenSticken · 25/09/2013 19:41

I managed to nip into town this afternoon, only made it as far as h&m (which is where 75% of my wardrobe is from anyway) and jeez I felt drab. Tried on a load of mossy green and wine/burgundy stuff and it just looked dull dull dull. The trousers/jeans is picked up were camel/light brown and though I'm usually a size 10-12 the 12 was miniature and my toddler was getting restless so I couldn't try a larger size... as I was gathering things I could see that it would all match but it just looked plain and boring and dark. Oh there was a nice purple midi dress (similar to the one up thread but without the slit) for £12.99 and the small was too small but DD was about to lose it so I had to go.

So I'm out with the girls on Friday night (either dinner out or drinks at someone's house) and again on Sunday lunch. Work thing has been postponed til next weds so that buys me a bit of time but I'm seriously panicking about the weekends garms.

ChickenLickenSticken · 25/09/2013 19:43

Oh and meant to ask about the navy thing - most stuff seems to be proper navy, whereas my consultant said I should aim more for marine blue, which of course is nowhere to be seen.

How I long to be a winter....

charitygirl · 25/09/2013 19:58

Chicken - yes, I don't think most navy clothes are autumn appropriate, and marine navy is a bugger to find. I did a stealth raid on H&M last week and came out with a load of very dark olive basics - not very exciting but I don't see they're any more bring than a load of black basics! I also got a pale olive stretch mini which is going to look amazing with purple tights and (ok) black biker boots.

Back later for report on Me + Em stretch leggings which have arrived.

ChickenLickenSticken · 25/09/2013 20:04

Yes it is good for basics in there and I can't away with a linen t-shirt in both olive and burgundy so I guess that's a small start. I suppose it's just a complete shift away from what I usually go for so still getting my head round it.

I liked this jumper: m.hm.com/gb/product/13154?article=13154-B#mediaType=FASHION_FRONT but wasn't sure if its be autumn or not (left swatch at home) and could only ever imagine wearing it with black jeans. Surely it would look VILE with olive or burgundy jeans?!?? (Or us that a sign that it's deffo not an autumn then?)

ChickenLickenSticken · 25/09/2013 20:05

Now with proper linky m.hm.com/gb/product/13154?article=13154-B#mediaType=FASHION_FRONT

TheWombat · 25/09/2013 20:34

chicken I like that jumper :) I would wear it as an autumn with vibrant tendencies. I'm not sure what to put it with though. I think dark green, chocolate brown, petrol blue or oyster skinnies in summer would be good.

The clinch for me is, I really can't see that jumper working with black, white or a true navy.

For me, the trick with not looking drab is to think about how I put the colours together. Texture helps too. i think lots of autumns look good in clothes with interesting texture. So: brown cardigan with dark green top AND brown skinnies = potentially boring. But if you put the brown skinnies with a moss or lime jumper, maybe with an oyster lacy top peeking out underneath, and maybe a brown circle scarf to pull it all together, then suddenly it looks brighter, more interesting, and totally undrab. Usually my most successful outfits have three colours from my palette - two more muted or 'neutral' ones and one brighter one to add interest.

Things like belts, scarves and necklaces help to brighten things up if you don't want to go all monochromatic. Sometimes colours in the palette that you would think are awwwful together look good - I like geranium red and a pale peachy nude colour underneath for example. And muted coral, lizard grey and olive shades are gorgeous together.

snowlie · 25/09/2013 20:49

I like that jumper too chicken. I'd wear it with jeans, or my new blue cords which are more true navy than marine navy - my consultant didn't distinguish - I suit navy, so I'm ignoring the marine bit and I think it tones with my autumn colours which my consultant said was the key to identifying the right shade.

charitygirl · 25/09/2013 21:52

I'd wear that jumper with any shade of olive or khaki (of which no shortage in the shops) - it's lovely! Also with pale-ish jeans.

ChickenLickenSticken · 25/09/2013 22:00

I love you all. However you now must fear for your lives as I seek your opinions on EVERY SINGLE GARM I POTENTIALLY BUY, let alone how I then put then all together.

I'm learning lots. Thank you v much.

fififolle · 25/09/2013 22:53

Wombat the tops are a very flattering fit. I bought a cream long sleeved one then went back for a mustard touched front short sleeved one.

HerbertGistcool · 26/09/2013 07:20

Chicken - I love that top too and may have to go and look for it today. Much closer to my usual budget too after my jigsaw surge last week..
Am back working in a in a city centre after years in the sticks and still reeling at all the shopping possibilities.

HerbertGistcool · 26/09/2013 07:21

splurge not surge

Hopefully · 26/09/2013 08:59

Wombat I feel redundant with you here being the expert! What you say about textures is exactly how I think Autumns (and summers, for that matter) are usually best wearing their clothes. Whether it's great big differences in texture (eg chunky knits and smooth jersey) or something a little finer (such as moleskin and fine knitwear), a bit of texture really adds to the depth of colour.

I am waiting for this purple dress and this sequin dress] to arrive. i suspect the sequin one will be (a) too girly and (b) too white, but it was an itch that needed scratching! I would have ordered [[http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?searchTerm=tartan+leggings&storeId=12556&productId=11270032&urlRequestType=Base&categoryId=&langId=-1&productIdentifier=product&catalogId=33057 these leggings too if they weren't sold out in virtually every size (and I am emphatically NOT a size 8).

While I was there, I thought this was a good Autumn alternative to the pink cocoon coats that are everywhere this season, and there were two leather skirts here and here if anyone is tempted to indulge in leather this season.

Hopefully · 26/09/2013 08:59

sorry, sequin dress

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 09:46

Oh hopefully! I could have lived without knowing those leggings existed, seeing as they're sold out in my size. Though my 35 year old self would probably be on thin ice in them anyway. Some lovely things there.

The me and em leggings (ankle length) arrived - they are def more than leggings - very thick material, actually a bit scratchy. They will be very warm during winter.

Pros - look great with flat boots which was their primary purpose

  • no unecessary details, very flat profile
  • mid rise so no danger of muffin top

Cons - they're such a dark dark green that I'm not sure they don't look black!

  • bit scratchy as above
  • cold weather only
  • I possibly look a bit parsnippy in them with shoes
  • they feel like they might need honking up through the day.

So a bit more deliberation required...bugger, as I really want a pair of tight, good quality tregging type trousers ASAP, and I thought I'd definitely found the right ones.

Will post ths and then be back with link to what might be my perfect jacket.

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 09:50

Ooh Hopefully I am loving those topshop things, especially the leather skirts. I'm nervous of leather, stupid really but haven't got a clue what to put with skirts like that. Do you have any suggestions? I would so love to rock a red leather skirt, I am sure the people of my tiny devon village would be appalled, ha ha.

Sadly I am absolutely not a colour or style expert Blush. But I do love to knit and crochet and spend a lot of time looking at and thinking about different colour schemes for my creations. So after you did my colour analysis, I started thinking about my outfits in the same way.

Hopefully · 26/09/2013 09:55

Well I shall henceforth call you my A student Wombat* Grin.

I would wear a leather skirt with something quite simple like plain knitwear (something fine like uniqlo merino knits or chunky cream sweater) and flat boots for daytime, and maybe heels and a blouse (on someone smarter than me) or a nice t-shirt (on me) for evening).

What do people think - I hate the Joules jolly hockey sticks brand, and I know this shape is brutally unfash this winter but its perfect for me, and I love tweed, and faux fur...anyone got a code from a catalogue by any chance?

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 10:07

Loving the idea of a plain t shirt and leather skirt, that sounds gorgeous. Thank you :) I may have to try out some leather and report back - albeit after next payday Blush

So good to have a thread like this. I am getting so many ideas of how to put things together in my existing wardrobe. And becoming more confident about the things that really don't belong in there - an eBay selling spree is due, I think...

TheWombat · 26/09/2013 10:26

Does anyone think this leather skirt is an autumn colour? I luffs it.

charitygirl · 26/09/2013 10:29

Wombat - I think that's a borderline autumn colour, but the silver zip tips it onto the wrong side for me! Lovely tho.
