HoC Spring thread....

BeginnerSAHM · 12/08/2013 19:00

This is a thread for all of us who have had their colours done' by House of Colour and are a Spring. (And 'believe' in it...Wink.) Or, by CMB and are 'clear and warm'. Think a few other CMB catergories might be spring too - 'soft and warm' maybe/' warm and clear' (different from 'clear and warm' because of the order of priorities/dominance...)?

Feel free to ask any Spring-related fashion/make-up/style questions on this thread.... (I won't know the answer but lots of people on these boards will!)

So, I'll start with a 'spring' question.... I never wear lipstick. I occasionally wear neutral-ish lipgloss on a night out but never reapply during the evening so it's always gone within the first 20 mins. I know as a spring, I 'should'. Can anybody suggest a Revlon lip butter that is springish? I gather they are more sheer than full lipstick so might be a good way for me to start trying lip colour out! Thank you

jumping I don't have fleur power atm, just pinch o peach which is less pink (I believe)

Beginner I'm v v short sighted and wear contacts, in fact for years people asked if I wore coloured contacts...nope , just spring eyes I guess? I just ignore the Bridget jones mum comments. I'm happy with the changes I see in the mirror, theyre undeniable and that's what counts

Great list Gillybobs - thanks for posting. I bought a new lipstick yesterday - Kate Moss for Rimmel, shade 110 which is described as vibrant coral. It's a bit scary as it is very bright but I am pleased with how it looks (just got to get over being scared of bright lips) and only cost £3.99.

Am trying to lose half a stone at the moment so slightly reluctant to buy any new clothes but still desperate at the same time to replace the vast amount of black I have hanging in the wardrobe. I'm so pleased with this thread and really enjoying learning more about the right colours.

Wools i have that Kate Moss lippy and its fabulous if a little on the neon side. Love it for going out. And the unicorn lady thinks bright springs can wear a little black, which I still do for work, just making sure I mix it with spring brights and the right lippy. Id never ever wear head to toe black now that I realise how deathly I look in it

Aquelven Mac bombshell looks fine for a light spring Id say but the other two do look quite pale. Trial and error innit? Grin I have been married to this cause for two years and still making mistakes at times

I'm just marking my place as I was 'diagnosed' as spring (think maybe warm and clear?) by my step mil a couple of years ago when she was training. She found me very hard to diagnose as there were quite a few autumn colours that looked good as well, so to be honest I've been a bit unsure and haven't really got into it as there is a bit of confusion and doubt in my mind!
I have hazel eyes, and naturally a warm mid ish blonde coloured hair which is highlighted, and my skin is fairly pale but tans easily.
Colours that looked best were corals, poppy red, bright turquoise, and a purple colour I think. I think one of the autumn colours that threw her was teal looked quite good.
I'd really like to get them done by someone experienced, but can't really justify the money ATM.
I find it very hard to find any of the exact colours (especially in an item I like) and so normally end up giving up and getting things as near to as I can, which really isn't the idea!
So I'm hoping to lurk a bit on here if that's ok, and try to learn some useful bits and pieces! Grin

welcome Tired Ive heard it said that if you suite khaki you must be an autumn so that might be a good way of ruling out autumn for sure? Do you have a book of spring swatches to help you find the right colours? Its virtually impossible to shop without one, especially at first when youre trying to get to "know" your palette

Gillybobs - good to know black isn't a total write off. I bought a lovely black coat last winter before having my colours done and would still like to wear it this autumn so I guess a scarf in the right colours and my new lipstick may be the way to go.

Same here, wools.
I have two newish gorgeous coats that I saved to buy & went a bit mad, one 80% cashmere & the other a beautiful soft black sheepskin that was more than I've ever spent on an item of clothing in my life. Both black Confused but there's no way I'm letting them go.

Regarding the swatches, my consultant said not to try to match the colours exactly when shopping. The trick was to open up the folder & hold it against the item you were considering buying. If it toned & blended with the swatches it was your colour. I notice it says in the booklet she gave us with the swatches...
"The 36 colours in your wallet represent a quarter of the colour wheel & therefore it is not 36 colours that you can wear but hundreds & thousands.
Do not match. These colours are precision dyed so that you may use your wallet as a whole. Check that whatever you are buying tones with all your colours & you will find in-between shades. Use your words to help you when in doubt."

Thats true regarding the swatches but I think it takes some people a bit of practice to be able to see the swatches as a whole rather than individual.

But as your confidence grows its great as you realise there are many more colours that work really well. Ive found that a nice bright coral was missing from the swatches , and also a purpley pink, but now I know they work Im happy to buy them

Unicorn ladies' swatches have lots of colours missing from the HoC wallet so thats been interesting (I dont have her swatches, but have seen them online)

Gilly thanks for the list, it's just in time for my visit to my nearest big shopping center on Saturday. First stop Bobby Brown to try the apricot blusher, next stop Mac for See Sheer and Crosswires.

Make-up has been a bit of a challenge for me.It took me ages to find the right colour foundation. Eventually I mixed a cool with a warm (accidentally) and hey presto, perfect! I'm still working on the right blusher so fingers crossed for BB.

Like all you lovely ladies, I need a bright lipstick which came as a bit of a shocker to me. I can't believe what a difference it makes, how it pulls everything together and was more astounded by this than the draping if I'm honest.

Thank you to everyone on this thread. I'd lost my colours mojo but it's back with a vengence. Come Saturday I shall be like a shopping spring shark hunting those brights Grin

Enjoy the shopping glasses!

Tired - suspect you might be a spring actually... But it's difficult to say. the khaki sounds like an excellent way of testing. All those colours you mentioned suit me well (including teal). Weirdly, (mid-ish tone) purple looks good on most people. Personally, I don't like it at all, so don't wear it but it does 'work' for me...

Interesting you mention purple I've had loads of purple disasters over the years, I used to buy loads of grey and sort of smokey purple (summer?) clothes and then wonder why I looked rubbish. I often think about all those expensive purple mistakes when I see folk on MN saying how much rubbish colour analysis is and how you should just wear what you like Wink

I died my roots last night using a foam dye and its come out a bit too dark and I instantly look older. Bah.

Ive always avoided purple believing that it only suited dark haired/dark eyed people but the violet is one of my double stars and I found a coat in it a year or so ago. Its my most complimented piece of clothing.

So, Ive been shopping today and seen loads of good stuff for Springs!! Ill try and link to some of it when I've put my little ones to bed.

Ooh - hate it when hair colour goes wrong. I went too blonde a couple of weeks ago and had to get loads of low lights put in to correct it. V expensive as can't do it myself. Confused

Hairdresser trip , gillybobs??

Jumping - ooh, do share when you get a mo!

Purple... Hmmm.... Not for me even though it does suit me! The hyacinth-ish ones anyway!

Going to try shampooing it with head and shoulders a few times, have a feeling it will lift the colour just enough

Hyacinth and apple are my two least favourite colours from the swatches. Way too mother of the bride for me.

cardoon that's not on the HoC swatches but I believe it's on the 12 blueprints bright spring fan. I have a coat in that colour and I definitely think it looks good. I am well jel that Johnnies B stuff fits you!

Soaking your hair in oil, any, & warming it with a hairdryer in between shampooing it twice with the head & shoulders is supposed to help the colour lift more quickly.
Purple is one of my double star colours so going to try a knitted in it.

Cardoon, I have a thin jumper from last year in that exact colour. Wasn't sure when I bought it but do get compliments on how it suits me. I wear it with a light grey skirt or trousers & it looks ok, well better than ok really.

Right, first off, make up. Thank you Beginner, I picked up the black/brown Max Factor Clump Defy mascara which is really great. I also bought the Kate Moss bright coral lippie and the Revlon Tutti Frutti Lip Butter, both nice and picked up a Rimmel Scandaleyes eyeliner in Bronze, which is waterproof so I imagine longlasting and a lovely colour. I couldn't get to a MAC counter so See Sheer will have to stay on the list for a bit longer.

Clothes-wise, I only popped into a few shops quickly while my baby napped. Banana Republic was awash with spring colours, lots of crew neck jumpers including Kerry Green jumper (though viscose/nylon mix not ideal), turquoise, lots of knee length work skirts in coral, turquoise, lots of striped t-shirts and jumpers in spring colours (see here). Nothing that exactly sets the world alight but good spring basics. Lots of nice tan and red bags including small tan crossbody, tan hobo and red nylon tote which is more poppy and less raspberry in real life.

Loved loved a smaller version of the green John Lewis bag linked upthread, a perfect small cross body bag- why didn't I take my colour swatch?!

Zara had some cotton blazers in navy and I think Leaf Green, good bright/marine navy cropped trousers and cropped jeans (also in dove grey). Nice grey cotton/silk jumper.

In Cos, I saw a coral skirt and grey skirt that I liked, loads of basic cream tops in lovely shapes and weights, a few things in Oxford Blue including jumper with rose-gold metallic thread and breton, some beautiful gold brogues...oh and v nice grey or navy folded leather shoppers. The COS website makes the clothes look awful! They're much nicer IRL.

I didn't buy a thing other than make up as I'm still losing baby weight but I had such a nice time browsing and feeling all excited about being able to wear beautiful spring colours again. Thanks to Beginner for starting this thread!

I think I'm going to buy the Johnnie B navy peacoat though as it looks to be quite a bright navy. If anyone comes across a good red trench coat please let me know-that's next on my list!

cardoon, do you mind me asking are you a small 10? Someone has reviewed the cardy saying that they bought a 15-16 yr as a 10! I may have to buy multiple sizes of the coat!
