How to pull off the 'posh girl scruffy look'

watchforthesnail · 04/08/2013 17:46

i work in a very naice store, i see so many of these girls/ women a day. You know the look, all underdressed, but also looking very expensive/classy but not over done.

Is it alook that only money can achieve? ( i have none) where would i start?

I think ive got the hair down ( ish) but have no clue on the make up either.

Travel! You made me laugh Grin

I should have said the posh part ruined as I have an accent. And you made me yearn a bit for age 22 when I could do it properly. All espresso'd up and nonchalant. Was fun.

You're posh gamine btw Grin.

snail I love your thread. Like the eyeliner-less photo too.

In winter you need cashmere, I think.

I've been trying to buy less, but better - pay attention to the fabric your clothes are. Silk, viscose, cashmere, cotton = all good.

Jewellery like this stuff (basically everything on the site).

I cannot, for the life of me, get the hair right. It's thick and I just got highlights, but I can't style it at all. Is babyliss big hair actually a hair revelation, or is it shite?

Haha Travel yes on both counts. Grin Non use of term and Liberty, just a few years on!

Not sure about the BBH might make hair too neat.

People that really look the part are private secondary schools near here. Loads of messy long hair and scruffiness.

i have a big round brush that has a metal barrel.

and a ton of layers ( because i like it scruffy) i mostly dry it by blasting it upside down then just use the barrel brush on the top layer because im lazy and it looks ok.

i never brush it. ever.

thanks marsh... that was a first go at no eyeliner ever for about 20 years. needs a bit of practice i think... but people keep saying how young i look... that can only be good.... :)

buying less but better quality might be a good idea. not that i buy much anyway. but i am prone to impulse buys and daft things im never going to wear.

My hair always looks neat anyway, as it just goes straight. I never brush either.

Best style for me is one of those grabby tortoiseshell clips and I sort of scoop it all up, clip and hope for the best. hair down never looks good on me.

Round here everyone wears padded joules coats. DH wants to buy me one, but I'd rather have a camel coloured wool trench coat. Already have a wax barber so don't need another weekend waterproof.

For lips Smith's Rosebud lip balm is perfect - it's basically posh vaseline with the tiniest hint of colour. Burt's Bee's tinted lip balms in a pinky rose colour also good. Agree that Urban Decay's Naked palette for eyes is great for this look.

marchline - yeah, i dont think those padded joules coats would come under ' posh girl scruffy' because they are too ' neat and trying to be posh' a wax barbour is totally the right think though, same as the trench coat :)

Sleep - i will. I really dont buy things very often as im skint as a skint thing... is that still ok?

snail there are lots of peole on mnv who dont actually buy loads, if you like admiring links to things other people are buying or considering buying, or even just admiring, and you are up for some friendly banter, with honest feedback and suggestions if you want it, then you'll fit right in Smile.

Mumsnet vogue - another thread where a group of us discuss purchases, looks, lifestyle. It's fun.

I love this look and it's all over the south west. I find it fairly easy as have bra length thick dark hair which gets brushed and washed as little as possible, I'm tall and slim, gravitate towards simple easy clothes (like marsha!). Nothing better than a day at the beach then slinging on hotpant shorts, slouchy tee and havs with big shades. Easy and fun is the best for summer isn't it?
