How to pull off the 'posh girl scruffy look'

watchforthesnail · 04/08/2013 17:46

i work in a very naice store, i see so many of these girls/ women a day. You know the look, all underdressed, but also looking very expensive/classy but not over done.

Is it alook that only money can achieve? ( i have none) where would i start?

I think ive got the hair down ( ish) but have no clue on the make up either.

fellatio - honestly i am very very curvey. and and short. aka short and fat :)

but im sure we can do some kind of version of it :) i have discovered the secret to looking better in slouchy tops with skinny jeans it to wear a longline vest top ( white or black, or cream, or grey) UNDER the slouchey top. SO, it sort of makes you look less billowey AND holds you all in a bit AND looks a bit scruffy like you dont care. hurrah!! its win/ win

Ok watchfor, wear a neutral lip tint. I've got one somewhere, think it's by bobby brown. Then a bit of vas over the top!

ArieltheMermaid · 05/08/2013 10:34

Oh and never wear Coleen Rooney perfume - dead giveaway.

shoeprincess2 · 05/08/2013 10:35

I'm loving this thread. I aspire to be like this- well put together, but without having to take too much time. I have the layering t shirts (in a multitude of colours) and a vast array of jeans (though haven't quite found the best kind of skinnies- they either sag round the derriere or make my legs look like encased sausages).
However, I've now come to realise that I only suit certain colours- navy, brown, silvery greys and burgundy. So, I'll have to ditch a lot of my layering t shirts and start over. So, 2 questions to you wise ladies:-

Where is the best place to buy one good pair of skinny jeans. I have a small waist and bum, and slim, but not skinny, legs?

Best place to buy a dressy top in one of the colours above- long / 3/4 sleeved and would go with jeans or trousers?

TheRealFellatio · 05/08/2013 11:01

i think that kind of "undone" hair takes a lot of styling to perfect.

I have long, thick blonde hair. I can achieve that kind of swishy, undone soft wavy look, but it take me 45mins with a dryer, big round brush, and a lot of product.

If I let it dry naturally it just looks scruffy, as opposed to artfully undone.

OctopusPete8 · 05/08/2013 13:23

I'm far too northern to 'get' scruffy chic.

yeah the over a size 8 need not apply lol, its doesn't flatter boobs and bum.

ArieltheMermaid · 05/08/2013 14:01

Exit Grin I was joking about the Coleen Rooney perfume! He he.

ArieltheMermaid · 05/08/2013 14:03

Well, not joking about not wearing it, but joking about the implication that would ever in a million years be caught wearing it! Coco Chanel all the way for me dahling.

ExitPursuedByABear · 05/08/2013 14:13

I didn't just mean about the perfume! I meant the mulberry handbags and the high heels - you are Cornish Ariel of basking shark fame ?

primallass · 05/08/2013 14:55

It cannot be done if you have shorter mumsy hair and are plump.

Hence my pre-40 midlife crisis diet and hair growing regime ...

watchforthesnail · 05/08/2013 14:59

i do blow dry my hair with a big round brush everyday...

still fat though :)

I've noticed that a number of women with this look tend to have that dark goldeny blond hair colour and not overly blond hair which seems to add to the classy and natural look.Of course natural lightish blond is a different story.

LarryMcNue · 05/08/2013 15:31

Visit your nearest town with a ver exclusive public school. Check out the 6th formers

All faaar less polished than a lot of these suggestions but they ooze money despite looking complete scruff bags

Most seem to have a bit of 'ethnic' in their look. A bit of embroidery or suchlike. All slightly frayed around the expensive edges

SuperiorCat · 05/08/2013 16:17

I'm taking notes from this thread, sadly I feel I am too old, overweight and Irish toned to pull off this look

jimjamspam · 05/08/2013 17:24

Have generations of rich ancestors who's good diet means you are tall

Peasant stock means you will be stunted short

Chubfuddler · 05/08/2013 17:27

I'm tall but still peasant like. My hips are too wide to be an aristo.

I remember as a teenager reading some nonsense article in the DM about how rich women had a different femur to tibia ratio to us peasants. I measured and found my legs to be lacking. I realised the DM hated women that day.

lurkingaround · 05/08/2013 17:48

Oh wow! I would love to see that original DM article. What a crock.

SorrelForbes · 05/08/2013 18:28

My style is pretty much as described up thread. Alas, being big of nork and 5'4" I doubt whether I look the part! However, it's comfy, easy to put together and simple. I own two pairs of high rise skinnies, a few long vests, a couple of silk t-shirt style tops and a couple of blazers and that's about it. I mix it up with a few simple, knee length, summer dresses when it's warmer weather. My big slouchy bag and oversized sunglasses are key but I only own one of each (flush I am not). Ballet pumps, tan sandals and Ash Jalouse boots are my standard foot wear.

I'm allergic to most jewellery so just wear diamond studs, a gold or silver chain and a plain, small watch.

I have a good friend who is 5'8" and thin. She dresses in a much more high fashion, unique sort of way and I feel a complete scruff next to her!

My hair is currently like Sophia Coppola's hair as shown in attached pic but a little darker. It was long an swishy but I fried the ends with my Babylis Pro Curl Blush and had to have a drastic chop last week.

thriftychic · 05/08/2013 19:38

how would one achieve this look when the weather is cold ? I seem to have got the hang of it until it gets cold and then when the jumpers and big coats come out i become skint-girl scruffy!

Sleepwhenidie · 05/08/2013 20:44

Charlottebrontesaurus has hit the nail on the head I think...the look is not actually low maintenance except for a very few, very lucky girls who have won the genetic lottery breeding (and probably cash Hmm wise).

For most it takes a very high level of grooming that is being downplayed and, IMHO, is mainly about being young, having thick glossy hair (even if unwashed), glowing (pampered) skin and attitude. Coltish figure helps. I'm not sure the value of the clothes makes a great deal of difference if you have those basics nailed. There is definitely an air about it all that only growing up in a family with a lot of money (or being French Smile) brings unfortunately.
