So, I had my colours done yesterday and I am now a sprinter winter. My best colours being royal blue, electric blue, damson, lagoon blue and light emerald.

Of course a shopping trip is now required so I'm just after any inspiration by what you fellow winters have recently bought...

Hello winters, I've dug out this old thread because I wanted to show you a very very lovely red dress I tried on at the weekend. It's the perfect scarlet for winters. Unfortunely it looks a bit rubbish in the photos! It comes up a size too big, and I think the model should be wearing a size down, because on me it was still a drapey/1920s drop waisted shape, but skimmed curves rather than looking shapeless. It's also short enough to look cool but not so short you feel like a child or like you're overexposing your thighs. And looks amazing with opaque black tights.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I can't do more than 50% scarlet or any of the other bright colours.

For dresses, I look best in black, navy, grey, indigo and mole - very drab although I can add interest with a brightly coloured jacket or cardigan. Ordered a pewter dress in Boden's sale so I am already thinking of various outfits that I can make out of it.

The other day I wore a royal purple t-shirt and quickly grabbed an emerald cardigan on when it got cool and people commented on how I looked great in this combination so I will try to do more colours combining to avoid looking too drab.

And I have been taking advantage of Barry M's 3 for 2 offers - chuffed with the navy and deep purple. The wine red was a bit disappointing as I was hoping for a true burgundy (already got too many reds).

That sounds like a lovely combination MadAbout. I'm still rubbish at combining colours so am trying to wear my brighter colours in dresses etc. I used to live in navy dresses with no accessories or scarves (hoped I looked French but mainly just looked a bit drab I think!)

No wait, Essie Bordeaux is actually very red. I'm thinking of OPI's Just a Little Rosti At This - definitely more burgundy than red (browny/purple based red)

I'll let you know if I see anything MadAbout - it's one of my favourite colours too. Really rare to see it I think. Hobbs and NW3 are where I've seen the most pine green stuff.

I'm trying to get a bit bolder in my colour combinations and started this
pin board for inspiration. It's not all winter colours but some of them are.

keztrel I agree with mad that it doesn't look vivid enough. It's nice though.

I'm a winter sprinter too! (waves at QueenCadbury) great thread, I had my colours done last year and it's made such a difference. I now really think before I buy anything, so saves a fortune and justifies me spending decent money on a few key pieces. My HOC lady suggested I stop dying my hair blonde, it's now nearly grown out and looks so much better..
Chucking on the right colour scarf (black and white block pattern) makes me look so much better! I wouldn't have believed the difference it can make.

Ha Fairy, I had highlights when I went for my consultation and was told to grow them out and never go lighter than my natural colour. Cant believe I never realised how rubbish they looked!

Re hightlights, I dye my hair to cover greys and its not easy finding cool brown dyes, as so many products have warm tones.

Yes I found that when I was trying to dye over my highlights MadAbout - even supposedly cool browns went orangey or purple (probably not helped by the fact I was dyeing over bleach). My mum seemed to go very gracefully from dark brown hair to silver grey, and never dyed it. I kind of hope I might be able to do the same when I start to get greys...but somehow I doubt it! The silver really suits her as she has ice blue eyes, not sure it will look so good on me.

Anyway, I actually logged into say - have I already recommended Aveda Black Malva on this thread? It's vv effective at cooling down warm tones, if you have medium to dark hair.

Hi Winters,

I'd like to recommend Clairol Nice n Easy cool brown in 117D. Its a cool brown and is designed to reduce red/orange tones. This was recommended by my HOC lady at consultation.

Thanks for the tip - will look this up as my hair dye reacts when its sunny and makes my hair look red.

I think Winters who have gone grey can look stunning - I have a couple of friends who went dark grey which then faded to a beautiful silver. They can't wear too much of the pale colours in their palette (e.g white/dove grey/ice colours) though as they can look washed out if not careful (eg no all white outfits).

Keztrel - do you use the shampoo and conditioner or just one of these?

I have both but I don't think the shampoo does anything, so I wouldn't bother with it. The conditioner is a much stronger colour - comes out deep opaque purple whereas the shampoo is just a clear light purple. So I'd recommend just trying the conditioner first. I don't use it all the time now my highlights have grown out, just once a week because it makes my hair colour deeper and glossier. What colour is your hair MadAbout? You can leave the conditioner on for longer/shorter depending how dark you are.

mad I'll be on the look out for greens in AW as I don't have anything green at the moment. I find the emeralds and pine green quite specific and difficult to colour match as some things that i've found are too yellow-y.
