Calling all HOC winters.....

QueenCadbury · 21/04/2013 09:21

So, I had my colours done yesterday and I am now a sprinter winter. My best colours being royal blue, electric blue, damson, lagoon blue and light emerald.

Of course a shopping trip is now required Grin so I'm just after any inspiration by what you fellow winters have recently bought...

Queen thanks for the raspberry pie recommendation. I bought some earlier in the week and its great a real clear pink with no brown undertones like lots of lipsticks.(Do you think you could just pop around now and sort out my wardrobe lol)

QueenCadbury · 17/08/2013 19:42

fairy if you live in bristol I'd love to Grin.

Blusher wise I'm using the one I bought 9 years ago for my wedding Blush. It's bobbi brown sand pink which is seems a fairly neutral colour but as I'm on the edge of spring it seems to working me. As we're approaching winter I need to sort out my eye shadows (again, most are 9 years old!) as I tend to wear it more in winter. I did try purple eyeliner that we talked about pages ago which didn't work on me (looks like I'm bruised) but may try some ice colours. I was reading some interesting stuff earlier in the week about winters and will see if I can find it and link.

Aw thanks everyone, lots to look at and try out.

I do have benetint and dandelion. Never really use dandelion as I didn't think it did anything but I may try it again. I also got the berry smoothie lip butter last week. If I remember raspberry pie is quite bright? I think it scared me. I bought Wild Watermelon today but it looked very bright once I got home and could try it properly so not sure I am ready for it yet....or if it is even a winter colour....it seemed to have blue undertones.

Horrible outfits....well I was in John Lewis the other day and I saw a girl wearing dark plum skinny jeans and a cobalt blue top. The actual items were quite me with regard to the shape, and in theory they are my colours plus were quite contrasting but it just looked awful. She was slim, pretty Etc so it wasnt her making them look bad.
Then I see loads of people wearing blue, think its one of my double stars but not a colour I have ever worn, and I just don't like it.

I am grateful I can wear black and white but I am feign very restricted by feeling like I don't want to buy colours in supposed to wear but don't like, but don't want to waste money buying something I like but shouldn't wear.

Sorry bit rambly, it's late and I'm tired. I'm sure it will all click soon.

SunnyUpNorth · 18/08/2013 00:30

*feign = feeling

QueenCadbury · 18/08/2013 08:26

sunny don't rush to buy stuff if you're not comfortable in it. Do you wear scarves? That would be a cheap way of getting used to colour next to your face. When you had your colours done could you see that the colours looked good on you? What about grey or navy? Could you buy some tops in those colours to get you out of the black/white rut and it will ease you in gently.

Wearing 2 or 3 bright colours together doesn't feel like me so I wear a neutral top (grey/navy/white/black) and wear a colourful cardi. I then tend to wear another colour as a belt/bag/necklace or nail varnish. I'd love to be able to pull off some of the colour combinations on my pin board but am just not confident enough.

The lipstick thing will probably click soon. I couldn't get used to bright lips either but if you dab it on with your finger then it gives colour without just looking like a pair of lips. Now if I put on a neutral shade I can actually see that I look better in bright pink! It's been 4 months since I had my colours done though so I've had a bit more time to get used to it!

OP posts:
SunnyUpNorth · 18/08/2013 09:08

Thanks Queen, I am sure it will just take a while to click. I am not actually too had with wearing tons of black. I used to love wearing all black pencil skirt, jumper type ensembles when I worked but I'm a SAHM now and I suppose trying to redefine my style.

I love grey and navy, and wear alot of those. I do like colour and usually wear things like white jeans with a green top or cardi, or denim jeans with a brighter vest and blazer/cardi in black or grey etc But it turns out all the greens and links I have are quite Spring shades.

I couldn't really see it at all when she was doing my colours. My friend turned out to be an autumn and looked amazing next to her colours but I felt like a bit of a clown when she was holding all these jewel colours against me.

I don't wear scarves but I do like layering so I think starting small with some vest tops could work.

QueenCadbury · 18/08/2013 13:26

Do you think you've been diagnosed correctly? Surely you shouldn't be feeling like a clown when you have your colours done? Could the others see it on you? Would it be worth having a chat with your consultant?

OP posts:
SunnyUpNorth · 18/08/2013 19:18

I think I probably have been diagnosed correctly as I was definitely cool and I think I do suit clear rather than muted colours. But in used to wearing less strong colours such as apple greens or candy pinks. I think it is right as I have very similar colouring to alot of the celebrity exampls of dark/jewel winters.

Does anyone think this cardigan would be the right shade? It is worryingly called Warm Jade but does look quite like a winter green to my novice eye:

Hello all!!

Right the next cardi...not a success. Great colour but dreadful shape on me. Made me look bigger but then I realise I'm looking at myself differently after the style day. It's loose around my waist and then fitted just below so hides my slimmest part. Shame but its gone back. They have quite a bit tho in the same and similar shades so worth a look for any other winters.

I did buy a black and white thick striped tee tho. I really like the look on one of the pins of a woman in dark blue jeans with a black and white striped top and black blazer, she's also wearing a red scarf I think although that could be substituted for any 'pop' of colour scarf I suppose. As I have all the other bits that should be a good addition. So if anyone is at cadburys world tomorrow and sees someone who's a winter rocking that look it'll be moi, please say hi!!!!

Also got a pair of pointed, high (with a slender heel), black court shoes from Dorothy Perkins. They are the most perfect shoe I've seen in ages. Looked ace with the deep purple skinny jeans and grey top I was wearing. Also look great with bare legs, as tested this eve. I like high heels despite being tall and they look really expensive as are suede to the touch. They're £27 full price but have got 20% off at the moment. Worth a look anyway.

Am feeling far more confident in my colours this week. Pinterest has helped immensely. Am following queen and a few others although its my real name on there (clue initials J S) if anyone wants to have a look at my boards it's imaginatively titled 'me clothes'!!

marmaladewitheverything · 20/08/2013 11:31

Fwiw, I felt like v clownish initially as a newsletter. This improved when my hoc reminded me that I don't need to wear more than one bright at a time, not like those crazy Springs.

And style day helped massively- as a ingenue gamine it isn't surprising that I don't do flouncy stuff- bright scary colours in my styles are actually amazing.

It still feels a bit odd looking different i.e. not beige/grey/peach/lilac with is the norm here.

marmaladewitheverything · 20/08/2013 11:35

Clearly not as a newsletter. Typing while pushing DD2 on swings. I meant jewel winter. Obv.

Kezztrel · 20/08/2013 12:13

Lol @ newsletter marmalade :) I'm a jewel winter gamine ingenue too...I haven't actually done a style day and have no plans to, because I'm pretty confident about the clothes I wear (just less so about the colours...!) I don't wear many brights at all apart from scarlet, but am starting to quite like bright pink as long as it's not an overly girly garment. I wear loads of black, grey, navy, scarlet, burgundy and monochrome stripes. Boring but works for me!

My attempt to wear bright turquoise blue was a massive failure.

Fairyliz · 20/08/2013 13:21

Kezztrel, where do you find your pink clothes? I look good in bright pink but most clothes I see are too girly flouncy. I look better in more sharp tailored styles but they rarely come in pink.

Kezztrel · 20/08/2013 13:30

Fairy so far I've only got a plain pink tshirt, but there's a lot of bright pink but plain jumpers in the shops now they're getting their AW stock - I've seen some in uniqlo, boden, jack wills, Asos. Quite like this one but it's going to make DH's eyes bleed.

Kezztrel · 21/08/2013 11:10

Hello again winters, just wanted to share this with you because it's a perfect ice mint/aqua colour (looks a tiny bit greener in the flesh than on screen, but not much). Tried it on yesterday and it is perfect with my colouring, although I didn't buy it in the end - really makes dark eyes stand out. Lovely quality too, bit flufftastic on my black trousers though! Sizing a bit on the large side.

QueenCadbury · 21/08/2013 18:33

ketztrel that sweater's lovely. It's so difficult to find the ice colours. Unfortunately they're not the best on me as I suit all the bright colours best. I do have an ice hyacinth vest but I can see that although it looks fine it doesn't look amazing.

aftermay · 21/08/2013 22:44

Hello winters. As of today I'm a burnished winter. Lots of lovely colours that look good on me (and many I already have) but gutted about the browny-greeny-earthy tones that are a no-no. It's also time to accept that I'll never be a redhead. And I do know that really. I try and try but dark brown hair with no red or blonde highlights is really my best colour.

So today I bought a deep blue cardi from Mango and a fuschia top from Warehouse.

aftermay · 21/08/2013 22:46

Did you get stuff from the Kettlewell catalogue? I've got the 30% off code to get started so ill give it a Jo.

SunnyUpNorth · 23/08/2013 09:37

Hi all,
I am loving all the hot pink accents on Pinterest, especially with all black outfits. Just to double check - can we wear most of the hot/neon pinks? And then richer pinks like raspberry, fushia etc?

I have booked in for a 2 hour personal shopping session next week at John Lewis, it's free and I have a wedding to go to next weekend so hopefully they can help me.

QueenCadbury · 23/08/2013 13:13

Welcome aftermay. Will you wear your fushisa top and blue cardi together? I'm trying to get more adventurous in my colour combos but not entirely convinced yet. I haven't bought from kettlewell except a Chinese blue scarf. All the tops seem to be too short for my long body.

sunny I love the pinks too and yes, fushisa, cerise, raspberry etc are good on us. I used to hate pink but really like it now.

I'm hopefully going shopping/browsing within the next week so will report back any purchases or good things that I find.

Kezztrel · 23/08/2013 16:49

Hi aftermay :) I've never bought anything from Kettlewell but keep getting tempted to try some of their basics like a strappy top or scarf, as the colours look great and I'll know for sure they suit me!

Does anyone know what are the different types of Winters according to House of Colour? Burnished, Jewel...is there another one? I can't remember what type they said I am - I thought Jewel, but quite a few very bright colours seem to drain me. When you look online American websites seem to divide winters into cool, bright or deep, which I find much easier to understand - I'd be a deep winter according to their categories I think. My top colours were Scarlet, Grey, Indigo, light emerald, pine green and black.
