Calling all HOC winters.....

QueenCadbury · 21/04/2013 09:21

So, I had my colours done yesterday and I am now a sprinter winter. My best colours being royal blue, electric blue, damson, lagoon blue and light emerald.

Of course a shopping trip is now required Grin so I'm just after any inspiration by what you fellow winters have recently bought...

I've not done the style day NewName but a friend just has and found it really useful. She's a blue autumn and a classic ingenue. I'm tempted but I'm 99% sure I'd be a gamine ingenue so there's prob no point doing it.

I've always thought a lot of winters would make good Dramatics, because of all the black and bright colours and contrasts.

Neena28 · 12/08/2013 08:00

I'm a dramatic natural but its taking a bit of getting used to.

Makes clothes buying even harder cos now am looking at style and colour!! I'm trying though just think its a steady process.

It's worth doing in my opinion but I didn't feel like that straight away. It's taken me a fair while to realise that it is right for me and something I can carry off. Think age had a lot to do with it for me. I initially thought I couldn't do fashion and felt like I'd look like a right idiot next to my funky friends. Now I realise actually this is me and its possible to blend the two more and create a look that's mine. Does that make any sense at all?!

MadAboutHotChoc · 12/08/2013 08:13

Not done a style day but I think being a dramatic is easier if you are a winter - however I know two winters who have been styled and they are a gamine and a romantic so I am not sure if being a particular season will make you more likely to be a style type.

Neena28 · 12/08/2013 11:20

The other woman on mine was a gamine something. She really embraced it all very well.

SunnyUpNorth · 12/08/2013 13:37

Hi all,
Newly diagnosed Jewel Winter here. This thread is really interesting and I think will be really useful as I am really struggling with being able to identify whether a colour is correct or not. It's soooooo hard.

I think I am ok with the purples and blues but I can't tell if any greens or pinks are the right shades or not.

Don't think I will do the style day, I am pretty sure I would be classic and natural. Have a pretty good idea of what styles suit me (I think....thought I knew what colours suited me too!) and don't want to add any confusion to the mix at the moment.

How are you all approaching shopping? I just had a brief look in a few shops this morning and kept picking things up because I thought they were the right colour but would then realise they were totally not my style and I was being side tracked by the colour. Then I couldn't actually decide about the colour anyway so left empty handed. Did see this thread before I went out though so did pick up a berry smoothie lip butter thing. Tried the raspberry pie and the red one mentioned but thought they were too much for me to cope with at the moment!! I have never work lipstick in my life!

SunnyUpNorth · 12/08/2013 13:40

Ps in that's landsend cardigan link, would the grass green be the right colour?

SunnyUpNorth · 12/08/2013 15:41

queencadbury thank you, thank you so much for that Pinterest board, it is really helping me imagine the colours and also how to pair them. Thank you!!

orchidella · 12/08/2013 19:33

SunnyUpNorth I haven't seen the landsend cardigan link you mention but I've just bought 2 of the supima Lands End ones. I decided against grass green and chose emerald isle and purple sapphire. My colouring is dark brown hair, pale skin and greeny, grey eyes. I was a Clear Winter in Colour me Beautiful when I checked (some time ago!). I thought grass green might be too bright a green for me but would suit winters with darker skin tone or maybe brown eyes. Anyway my cardigans have arrived today and am really happy with them. They are both lovely colours and clear, not at all muted.

SunnyUpNorth · 12/08/2013 22:35

Thanks orchidella the purple one sounds lovely and they are quite reasonably priced. I might take another look...

SunnyUpNorth · 12/08/2013 22:39

Ps how does the size come up? I'm a 12 and wouldn't want to order the 10-12 if it is too skimpy, but likewise the 12-14 could be too saggy.

orchidella · 13/08/2013 12:48

The next size up from the Small (10-12) is a Medium which is 14 -16. I am between 14-16 and that's fine for me but I do think that would be too baggy for you and the cardigan isn't going to look good with too much excess fabric as it is a fine gauge. So I'd say try the Small and see how it is.

NewNameforNewTerm · 13/08/2013 13:19

Re. Landsend. I got caught out a few years ago as I hadn't noticed they sell in American sizes. They were fine with exchanges / refunds and I think the website is clearer now though.
I've had coats, cardigans and a dress they seem pretty true to size for me. It depends on the cut, but they don't seem too snug (which suits me well). I'm tempted with new winter trousers this year.

LakeFlyPie · 13/08/2013 14:15

Just a quick heads up as you'd dropped off my active threads.

Nipped into John Lewis yesterday and there seemed to be a sea of cobalt blues and bright purples, didn't have the time (nor cash) to browse but looks promising for Autumn / Winter.

I saw a beautiful bright lemon yellow stripey linen t shirt which I deliberated about.
Gorgeous bright colour, but when I held it up to my face it definitely didn't look quite right so I left it. I'd have bought it without a thought before I got HOC'd so goes to show I've learnt something.
I do wonder if it would have worked with a perfectly coloured scarf between it and my face though - I've still got lots to learn obviously!

I'd be very interested to do the style session.
Is there a good link which explains the different groups? Differing varieties of gamine / ingenue ?sp) all sounds a bit mysterious.

Sunny your colouring sounds identical to mine, I tend to go for deep, bright emerald greens and fuchsia pinks (with blue undertone).
I struggle a bit getting the right reds sometimes as they seem to bring out the red in my nose which isn't a good look Shock
I've got the raspberry pie lip butter and wore it yesterday, DS2 (2.8) immediately asked "What you got on your lips?"!

SunnyUpNorth · 13/08/2013 14:26

Thanks for the tip off Lake, I am hopefully going to JL this week so will have a look.

There was a red mango jumper linked up thread...I checked with my HoC consultant and she said it is a spring red. So that's a shame but saved me a buy!

Kezztrel · 13/08/2013 15:52

Sunny I bought that red Mango jumper - it's a true red in the flesh (and in the picture, to me - your consultant must be able to see something I can't). Unfortunately it's a crappy jumper so I sent it back Grin

SunnyUpNorth · 13/08/2013 21:07

Thanks Kezztrel - better luck with your turquoise!

QueenCadbury · 14/08/2013 08:48

Following on from buying raspberry pie lip butter, I have now bought berry smoothie which is a really natural looking colour for those days when you don't want bright lips, and red velvet which is a lovely deep red but not too dark (being a sprinter I can't wear anything too dark).

OP posts:
Kezztrel · 14/08/2013 08:50

I have those three Queen and the colours are perfect. I just wish they were longer lasting. I find myself reaching for my Mac and Clinique lipsticks much more often because of this.

SunnyUpNorth · 16/08/2013 23:13

Where have all the Winters gone? I'm very jealous of all the action on the Spring thread.

Anyone got any good blusher recommendations for a Jewel Winter seeing as hoC woman said I shouldn't be wearing bronzer as it is warm?!

I keep seeing people in my colours and thinking their outfits are horrible :(
Wish I was Spring. Need to stop lurking on that thread.

LakeFlyPie · 16/08/2013 23:52

No, no, stop lurking cross season, hide that thread Grin
We've got the boldest and best colours (and can do black and white, which is a blessing)
Have a look at QueenCadbury's Pinterest board (linked somewhere upthread, for some beautiful Winter styles and outfits.

I'm no make up expert but use Benefit Dandelion as a blusher and find a light dusting all over my face definitely perks up my appearance.

LakeFlyPie · 16/08/2013 23:56

and the next thread I clicked on !

Maraki · 17/08/2013 07:40

Blushers:
Benefit Dandelion and Nars orgasm have got coral in them, so they are more suited to spring seasons and are not completely cool. They are ok for us winters but not perfect.
I have found Mac's pink swoon and dollymix (perfect with red lips) to be perfect. Both look scary in the pots but they go on very sheer and are very flattering. Bobbi Browns mauwi (its called a bronzing powder but its actually a pink blush) is sheer, natural pink with a tiny bit of sparkle which highlights cheeckbones. It still has a tiny bit of coral, less so than nars orgasm and its so tiny that I think we can get away with it. The Mac ones though are reslly perfect.

Maraki · 17/08/2013 07:54

Oh and both Boots and Superdrug have 2 lip butters for £10 at the moment. But I cannot see Queen's colours online Angry

Aquelven · 17/08/2013 08:33

Sunny it works both ways Grin
I'm a spring & been lurking on here, especially before we had our own thread, to read all your great tips & links to see if they come in spring colours.
I only had the HoC day a few weeks ago & had been convinced I'd be a winter or summer, having pale skin, white/ blonde hair & turquoise eyes. Really worth getting it done properly, a real revelation! Grin

Kezztrel · 17/08/2013 17:44

For blushers I use Mac pink swoon, well dressed (v pale cool pink) and frankly scarlet (not for the faint hearted but you can do a proper snow white look with it). Benefit benetint is good too.

Sunny what kind of winter outfits have you seen that are horrible?!
