Which items of clothing do you think scream 'tourist' when abroad?

Inspired by an earlier thread re capsule wardrobes and holiday packing, DonaAna commented on tourists who visit town in Italy where she lives being obvious as they wear Maxi dresses, when the Italians would wear a knee length dress.

What items do you think identify tourists/holidaymakers? To me, it is the knee length shorts in bright colours, bum bags or similar, socks worn with sandals...........

Football shirts

Trousers that zip off to make shorts.

Baggy shorts instead of tailored ones.

T-shirts with slogans.

Raincoats and walking boots,

nobody looks good in either of these

Dresses made of printed fabric? Being a tall redhead in Mexico? Ugly radley handbags?

Bright new trainers - especially when worn with shorts.

Three quarter length trousers

Being fat and pasty looking (like me before anyone jumps down my throat)

Walking shoes/boots/sandals - tourists want to see the sites, locals sit and drink wine in nice shoes

Bum bags (or fanny packs, as we Yanks call them)

white linen trousers, kaftans with sparkly bits from monsoon
cropped cotton trousers in plain colours
yy to maxi dresses

Depends where you are. I loathe football shirts on grown men but have to say they're not seen only here - in cities anyway. Have sat in Milan' s most elegant shopping gallery on a Saturdays and seen hordes of them on Italian young men.

Whatever I wear - and a lot of it's Italian- my height, size, and colouring mean I look like a foreigner anyway in a lot of Europe - only get mistaken for local in Germany and Belgium.

Di agree that in Med only Brits favour maxi dresses.

Linen trousers
BRIGHT pedicures or French manicures
Tie dye
Gold sandals
Bg white trainers and knee shorts

Vest tops with bra straps showing worn with shorts and flip flops - finished off with a tattoo and pink skin

Umm but what's wrong with looking like a tourist?

OK I'm personally not going to wear trainers, a bum bag or football shirt. But I regularly wear maxis, gold sandals and tie dye and looks down at neon pedicure

Beachwear worn in towns is a dead give away. My local town fines shirtless tourists!!
Locals only wear plastic flipflops/shorts/sarongs on the beach.
Football shirts. Sun hats. Kaftans.
Have to agree about maxi dresses, I do love them, though! Proper shoes should be worn in the evening.
New, new, clothes!
I was in town this morning, and there were lots of Spanish tourists, and though we are in Spain, you could just tell as they were shiny and new, in their best clothes!

Or is it that you all want to look like travellers as opposed to tourists

And whilst I'm on my high horse - seriously I'd no desire to dress like many of the locals I've seen on holiday

Oh yes, nail art, on the ladies, and french manicures.
Being pink and speaking English gives the game away!
And that thing of having blonde hair with brown hair underneath, saw alot of that last year!

I don't care about looking like a tourist, but having made the mistake of wearing strappy tops in countries where it isn't the norm (not awful, but I was aware I stood out), I am especially aware of sticking in a vague sort of way to local modesty standards.

But I definitely do the bright pedicure, maxis, gold bangles etc

Sarongs. Tankinis. Crocs.

I also like to adhere to local standards of propriety where possible, in some countries beyond Europe there is little hope of me blending in even if I wanted to. I dress the same as at home, in whatever feels comfortable for the climate and context.

Dyed blonde over processed hair.

All Scandinavian women over 40 have dyed red short hair and very funky glasses.

All if them obv.

Maxi dresses. Yes. Hot hot.
