New thread for chatting. Oh and swapping S&B tips.

Having a manic day here - INSET day at school and I have 7 kids (inc my 3) over for lunch. While also trying to "work from home" and talk to removal people.

Well, as both DH and I are teachers in P and S, I think my answer (which would be DH's too, though I doubt he'd take the day off to take DS!) is the definitive one Smile

Blackduck · 25/04/2012 21:51

I was not a phone person (lived on dp's hand me downs) until he handed me an iPhone I (wants emoticon, which is so not blackduck) my iPhone :)

I have an iPhone, and I

CointreauVersial · 25/04/2012 22:58

Herbs - so you have a "forgetful arse"? Hmm

BTM - you neeeeeed a smartphone. I went for an Android (HTC Desire S, on O2), and I love how easy it is to use and all the stuff it does. I can read books on it, control my Sonos music system, check my eBay, satnav my way around, play games and catch up on MN when I'm sat in the car waiting for child x to emerge from school y....... Oh yes, I occasionally make phone calls on it too.

MrsSchadenfreude · 25/04/2012 23:17

I have lower back/sciatic pain and am often in meetings from 0900 to 1930 (with an hour for lunch on a good day). I feel about 90 most days. My legs don't work properly when I get up from my chair after a meeting and I walk as if I've just shit myself and am trying not to let the jobbies bounce out of the bottom of my skirt.

Grin
bigTillyMint · 26/04/2012 07:05

MrsSShock!

Yes, I think it's got to be a smartphone, but the iphone is so £££!
I think I have narrowed it down to and HTC Desire or a Samsung Galaxy S2. But it's all a big step for me Blush I'm not even on contract ATM! How much data do you use a month?

BTM you won't look back :)
My next taks is ds's birthday party - ahhh - venue decided, need to do invites and sort food. He'll be 9 - when did that happen??

herbaceous · 26/04/2012 09:04

Mine's an iPhone 3, so quite old, and thus quite cheap. I think you can get a contract for even the new one, the 4, for about £35 a month. Which includes huge amounts of free calls, texts and internet use. I never get anywhere near my limits.

Grrrrrr. Awake sweating last night about this FARKING committee. People keep having attacks of the vapours and resigning due to 'other commitments'. I have other commitments too, and the work just keeps piling on to me. When I agreed to be chair, all the others were 'we're right behind you, we'll do all the work, you just organise us' yadda yadda, and now they're deserting me. I'm quite hurt - a lot of them were friends before we started this.

And my dad's in hospital. He collapsed in the bathroom on Monday, was taken away by ambulance, and has been in hospital ever since. They don't seem to know if it's heart or blood pressure, but of course I'm all worried that this is the beginning of the end.

wilbur · 26/04/2012 11:13

Oh herbs, sorry to hear about your dad, that's horrible for you. Hope they get to the bottom of what the problem is asap.

Just have to shout for a moment (as I am at work and actually shouting would be bad form). AAAAARGH, I HAVE SOOOOO MUCH TO DOOOOO. WHEN THE FUCKY FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO FIT IT IN??????

Feel better now, thanks for listening.

TheReturnOfStropperella · 26/04/2012 13:50

Ah no herbs, what a worry. Hope you get some proper info from the doctors soon.

wilbur - I'm listening and sending sympathy vibes FWIW (not much, I know).

herbaceous · 26/04/2012 14:41

If anyone can get info out of doctors, it's my mum. She's like a rottweiler. With a newly replaced shoulder.

What with the worry, lack of sleep and stress over committee, I'm rather emotionally charged for DS's first parents evening tonight. As soon as anyone says anything nice, I'm going to blub. Are they used to that sort of thing?

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2012 14:54

Oh dear HerbsSad How is your mum doing - is she worrying too?
And re the playgroup committee, it always seems to go like this, once people realise that it's time-consuming..... just keep your head below the parapet when he gets to schoolWink And don't forget your tissues for Parents EveningSmile

Wilbur, Get Off MN, then you will be able to get your work doneGrin

herbaceous · 26/04/2012 15:05

I know. I am NEVER chairing another committee. Or even joining one. Utter pain in the ringpiece. Still, only five months to go.

Interestingly, the ones who are dropping out are the ones who make a lot of fuss, but with little discernible result. The actually effective people are all on board. Thank FUCK.

As for mum, she would never admit to worrying, but I'd imagine she's worried sick. She's always prided herself on being 'capable', but sometimes I think she should let go a bit. I blame it on her losing her first child, my elder sister, when she was three.

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2012 15:15

Herbs Sad

I ordered both frocks. They're on the JL website. So free postage. I can send at least one back. Probably. Ho yes, obviously Blush

DP is still in New York, DD1 was ill yesterday and now our effing blinding boiler is dying.

Blackduck · 27/04/2012 06:38

Herbs, fingers crossed.

herbaceous · 27/04/2012 11:46

Spoke to my mum last night, and he's still in hospital and they don't seem to know what the matter is. Though they're doing a 24-hr heart trace to check that out. But apparently he's very confused and distressed - doesn't know where he is, and why, and why mum isn't there. Hopefully he should be discharged today, and allowed home, where he'll calm down.

I can't believe this is the same man as designed and built five houses, travelled the world teaching engineering and knew the answer to everything, as far as I knew. And that that man is never coming back.

wilbur · 27/04/2012 13:53

Oh herbs, I totally understand where you are coming from - my dad was my total hero and seeing him decline from that was very painful. Sad Just remember him how he was, as best you can. I have a fab pic of my dad above my desk - he's leaning on a walking milepost on a sunny day (he was a big hiker) and looks so strong and happy - it's the perfect memory of him. Has the hosp checked for pulmonary embolism? My dad used to get very confused, almost delirious, when he had a PE episode and it was often preceeded by a collapse. I know your dad has cognitive issues already, but if they are worse at the moment, it could be worth asking.

herbaceous · 27/04/2012 14:09

Thanks wilbur. I've got a similar pic of my dad, of him smiling and looking over the top of a camera, and looking all kindly. But every time I look at it at the moment, it sets me off bawling!

And top tip re the PE - I'll tell mum to ask the docs...

herbaceous · 27/04/2012 15:31

Sorry. I've done it again, haven't I, come on all me me me, and killing the thread as no-one now feels able to talk about frivolous S&B matters, such as frocks.

On a lighter note, I'm going to be singing I Know Him So Well in a fancy-dress karaoke night for BiL's 40th soon, and have to find an Elaine Paige outfit. I have the leggings, and the hideous dogtooth eighties jacket, so just need a blonde wig, beret, silky blouse and pink frosted lippy. Oh, and to saw my legs off at the knee.
