Weight versus dress size

On another forum somebody told me "there's no way" that I can weigh 10 and a half stone and still only wear a size 8 to 10. But I do.

I personally don't feel actual weight determines what size clothes you wear. Do you?

will be hitting warehouse...

TallyLo · 31/03/2012 11:53

to throw another spanner in...

I'm 5'9 and under 9stone, and I wear size 10 comfortably, with the odd (ie very few) 8 and some size 12 tops.

CuffingChunt · 31/03/2012 12:18

Chubfuddler well done you!
I am a little but ashamed of my weight at the mo, as it is the biggest I have been not preggers.
Diet starts Monday good old fashioned weight watchers, (hate pro points.)
I know the solution is simple but god do I struggle not to comfort/ emotional eat.

hellomotoe · 31/03/2012 12:51

Well I'm 5'1" and only weigh 7st 11 so you think I'd be quite trim and petite but in trousers / jeans I usually have to wear a size 12 to accommodate my generous hips and usually a size 10 on top - which I'm not saying is big, but I'd prefer to be smaller as being short makes it hard to carry off being heavier. I think it all depends on your bone structure, don't think I'd ever get into size 8 jeans no matter how much weight I lost as my hip bones are just too big, and my thighs Blush I'm a typical pear so if I lose anymore weight it just goes from the top of my body so my collarbone protrudes and my arms get quite scrawny. Think I just have a rather unfortunate "broad" figure but to the side I'm very slim and look like there's nothing to me.

Personally I'd love to weigh a bit more if it meant that I held my weight better - I know lots of people who are about the same height as me but weight 1 - 1.5 stone more than me but look slimmer :( I don't think it's I hold all my weight as fat either as I have quite muscular legs and when embarking on a new exercise regime have to be careful how much weights I do so I don't bulk up too much, but would love to tone up my arms a bit because they tend to look a bit scrawny. At the moment I'm unable to exercise due to a health condition but usually find when I exercise my weight tends to increase so I must be putting on muscle. I'd definitely like to lose a bit from my tum, as although not big, it's not as toned or as firm as I'd like, but unfortunately I tend to lose it from everywhere else first so go through that period of having lost weight from my boobs, arms, face and collarbone and looking like even more of a pear!

Anyone any solutions? Or am I just "fat" but light?

Ephiny · 31/03/2012 13:58

You sound similar to me hellomotoe - I'm 5'2" and about 8st, and similar size and shape to what you describe - no solutions though unfortunately!

Tbh I'm happy as I am as I'm healthy and don't think I look 'fat'. Just surprised to hear about people who are a similar height to me, well over 2 stone heavier, and apparently two sizes smaller!

mrsebojones · 31/03/2012 14:29

I'm 5ft and currently weigh 7 stone 10. I have clothes that are allegedly sizes 6, 8 and 10 in my wardrobe.
I find M&S and Next are both on the generous side and I need an 8 and sometimes a 6 in tops and T-shirts (I call myself a petite pear Wink).
Topshop on the other hand, I invariably need a 10 in skinny jeans and trousers and dresses.
As someone who is at the smaller end of the size spectrum, I do wish retailers would also bear us in mind. All this vanity sizing is no good for us!

AceOfBase · 31/03/2012 14:42

I 5ft4 13st and a size 12-14, sometimes a 10 on top. I have muscly legs and big noonday and a smallish waist. I think i am very heavy for my size

BettyBathroom · 31/03/2012 14:47

I'm 5ft 8in and weigh 9st10lbs - my clothes are between a 10 and a 12 - I have a pair of French connection jeans that are size 12s but they are too tight

AceOfBase · 31/03/2012 15:01

Noonday? Boobs :o

hellomotoe · 31/03/2012 15:13

Phew, thank God it's not just me Ephiny I don't think I look fat, just "broad" is the only way I can describe it. I don't mind my figure but think I would look better if I was 3-4 in taller - oh well that's what heels are designed for!

mrsebojones · 31/03/2012 17:11

So right about the heels hellomotoe!! my best friend is a decent wedge!! found this thread really interesting and how important we appear to think a size label is!!

nethunsreject · 31/03/2012 17:15

I'm 5'11, 10st and wear a 10. First time I've ever been able to wear a 10, mind, despite being the same size and shape as I was 15 yrs ago.

SIzes are MASSIVE nowadays in most shops.

My 72 yr old Mum has clothes from the 1960s in size 14s and I can't do them up.

anniewoo · 31/03/2012 18:48

Where shoula an apple shape shop?Sad

anniewoo · 31/03/2012 18:51

I've been off sweets , chocolate cake biscuits for lent( weight reason really not religious reason Blush ) and not a budge on the scales! I never ever seem to lose weightSad. My dd is the same and she does amazing amount of exercise.

pushingthesenses · 31/03/2012 18:59

I am 8 stone 8pounds
5ft 3
Size 10 in most places an 8 in some shops
4A in GAP jeans...yes!

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 31/03/2012 19:00

I am 11.5 stone and 5'6" (still carrying a bit of baby weight) but am now fitting easily back into my size 12 clothes. But I read in a mag that claire from steps is the same height, weighs 12 stone and is a size 16! It wasn't long ago I weighed that and I was a small 14 at the most. And adele is 5'9", weighs 11.5 stone and is a 14-16 apparently. Friends are always quite shocked how heavy I am when I tell them. Must have very dense bones! Grin

shoppingbagsundereyes · 31/03/2012 19:15

I weigh 11st ish and am in a size 14 bottoms and 12 top. I have lost 2st this year but was still wearing size 14 bottoms when I was nearly 13 st - my weight seems to spread all over my body, even my fingers are slimmer now.

moosemama · 31/03/2012 19:36

It depends on the shop, the cut, your body shape, posture and fitness etc etc.

I am exactly the same weight now as I was last month, but have not been able to exercise for a few weeks (circuit/interval training). As a result, the clothes that were falling off me last month are now a bit snug and in the case of one particular pair of jeans, positively uncomfortable.

After about a week of working out daily I tend to find that my clothes start to fit properly again.

A year ago I weighed just under 15 stone and was a size 18 squishing myself into size 16 clothes. Blush

Today I am 5' 7" and currently weigh 10 stone 13 lbs and am, mostly, wearing a size 12, with a couple of my old 14s thrown in for comfort. I can't go smaller than a 12 etc in jeans etc, even though the waist is always baggy, because I now have muscley (sp?) legs.

Next week, without a doubt and with no dieting, I will weigh 10 stone 11lbs (currenly have PMT Wink) but it will have very little affect on the fit of my clothes. For me its good quality high intensity exercise that makes the difference.

toffeefee · 31/03/2012 22:59

I am 5' 10" and weigh just under 8st and I wear a size 8. But, I cannot fit into my old size 10 clothes from my teens (am 35 now. I saved a few outfits that I loved! Grin ).

My Sister is about 2 stone heavier and wears a size 12. We are the same height, slightly different builds, but she lost some weight due to repeated tummy upsets whilst traveling and was almost the same weight as I am and for that period of time wore a size 8.

I used to weigh almost a stone heavier pre-DC but wore the same size clothes. However, I was more toned and had more muscle due to the nature of my job and taking exercise. Now I am a SAHM, do no exercise formal and so have no real muscle mass, which is why I think I weigh less but wear the same size!

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 31/03/2012 23:31

5'10" and under 8 stone?! Isn't that underweight?

toffeefee · 31/03/2012 23:37

Yep, but considering I have managed to gain half a stone from my lowest I am doing pretty well! Aiming to gain another stone throughout the year. Having 2 DCs messed up my weight. But my point was that at my weight I wear a size 8.

carernotasaint · 01/04/2012 00:19

I am currently on a diet but i know from past experience that when i am 12 stone i take a size 12 in a fitted skirt because my waist is small but big boobs and hips. It depends on your shape not your weight.

LolaAnn · 01/04/2012 00:44

Im the exact same height/weight as you OP! I wear size 10 in pretty much everything, although I really should be size 12 on the bottom - serious pear shape here and I'm working towards losing the extra 6kgs located on my ass before bikini season gets here because it does not look good on me.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 01/04/2012 17:55

Sorry that was an awful post, because I have spent most of my life trying to lose weight I sometimes forgot that it can be just as difficult to gain weight sometimes. Is it wring that I am slightly jealous?!BlushWink sorry again for rude post, I must have been a bit tipsy when I wrote it?Blush

MyLittleMiracle · 01/04/2012 18:11
