Weight versus dress size

On another forum somebody told me "there's no way" that I can weigh 10 and a half stone and still only wear a size 8 to 10. But I do.

I personally don't feel actual weight determines what size clothes you wear. Do you?

I have a friend who will not buy clothes unless they are a size 10 even though she is a size 12 really. Her clothes are very tight and she would look so much better if she wore clothes that fitted.

That's very odd. Does she not own a mirror?

BTW I'm not saying that you squeeze into your clothes, just agreeing with KarmaK that people think they are a certain size and will buy that size regardless of whether they fit them properly or not! I can believe that you are a size 8 10 at your height/weight.

dexter73 · 30/03/2012 15:24

x-post! Yes she does but she will not admit that she has put on a good stone in weight over the last couple of years and would rather squeeze into a size 10 then wear a size 12 that fits and makes her look slimmer!

winnybella · 30/03/2012 15:25

Size 36 is about 86-62-92 (maximum) -so if you have those measurements and still weigh 67 kg you must be mad of solid muscle, then Smile

Born2BRiiiled · 30/03/2012 15:30

I am 5ft 4, 13 st 3, and a 14/16. I think I am v heavy for my size. Made of actual lead. I have a flattish tummy, thin torso with boobs and slightly heavy thighs.

rookiemater · 30/03/2012 15:32

Wow born2b I'm roughly your size, more of a 14 than a 16 and am 5ft5.5 and 11st3.
Apparently I have way too much body fat which I am working on reducing, so I think the key difference may be what the body is made up of.

brighthair · 30/03/2012 15:38

5ft10 and a bit
15 stones something
Usually wear 14/16 top and 16 bottoms

chocoroo · 30/03/2012 15:38

I'm made of dark matter. I'm 5'5" and a bit and currently weigh 12 2.5. I've recently lost just over a stone and my size 14 jeans (mainly Oasis and Topshop) are now hanging off me. I'm aiming to get below 11 stone and see what size I am then - I'd like to be a comfortable Size 12 but I think I will still be above the "healthy" BMI if I stick there.

I should add that I bought some Size 12 jeans just before I got pregnant 2 years ago and I can't wear them as they're too tight so I think there's something wonky with sizing.

KarmaK · 30/03/2012 15:42

You seem quite invested in this.

Gobler'sknob: I'm similar to you. I'm 6ft and just over 11 stone. For the first time in my life I'm in the normal weight rather than underweight category on the bmi chart but I'm also now a 12-14 where I was always a 10 before when I was underweight.

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 30/03/2012 15:45

I think its more to do with wonky sizing than anything else.

I'm 5ft 7, currently just under 12 stone.

All these clothes fit me currently:
Sainsbury's size 10 jeans
M&S size 14 trousers
H&M size 16 trouser (and they are tight, sob)
Gap size 12 skirt.
Asda size 12 jeans.

BalloonSlayer · 30/03/2012 15:47

I am just under 9 stone and 5'4" tall, and generally speaking wear a size 12 top and a size 10 bottom.

My arms (especially below the elbow) and my legs (especially below the knee) are very skinny. Skinny jeans look like bootcut on me.

Someone the same height and weighing the same as me, but with normal size arms and legs would probably get into smaller clothes than I do.

Inthepotty · 30/03/2012 15:48

I'm 5 foot nowt, weight 10stone 4 (have done since I was about 15!) and am an 8, some places a 6, would buy a 10 for a loose look. So you can!

KarmaK · 30/03/2012 15:49

That is really huge variation! In my own case, regardless of the shop, I'm never going to less than a size 8 (with just the one exception of Gap, where I'm equivalent to a UK size 6) and I'm never bigger than a size 10. That includes everything from designer labels to Whistles and LK Bennett through to the likes of Top Shop.

FunnyLittleFrog · 30/03/2012 15:50

It's not just sizing, it's the cut and style. You can be a size smaller if you wear loose and floaty clothes rather than tailored, structured clothes. My Topshop size 10 leggings fit well and flatter but I can't get one leg into size 10 Topshop skinnies. Likewise, I have a lovely loose floaty summer blouse on today that's a 10 but I need size 14 button up shirts for work.

I also think there is sometimes a HUGE difference between 12 and 14, more so than other sizes.

Kaloobear · 30/03/2012 16:01

I'm about 10 stone (5'5") and fit into 10s, 12s and 14s depending on the shop and the item of clothing. Bit nuts really. It would be so much easier if all shops printed waist/hips/breast measurements instead-like men's shirts have the neck circumference-and then you'd just look for your own measurements instead of trying on 3 different sizes (in my case) in order to find where you fall in that particular shop.

anniewoo · 30/03/2012 16:15

Inthe potty where are u buying from? I am 10 stone 6 and 5ft 5 inches and i am a 14/16/18!!!!

MrsCampbellBlack · 30/03/2012 16:20

Dexter - I had an aunt like that - she'd line up all the size 10's in a shop and find the biggest.

I'm either a 24/25/26 waist in jeans depending on the make and style and also the wash.

There's just so much variation nowadays - I mean the gap size 0 dress I ordered recently (yes I know its really a 4) was huge on me - but size 2's I have from a few years back are snug.

Can't say I care what size anyone else is though so odd of the person to comment.

Inthepotty · 30/03/2012 16:26

Annie Oasis and Zara, few bits of topshop and gap? I have very little hips and high waist though, did lots of horse riding when younger and walk loads now. Muscly legs and arms. My mum is the same height as me, borrows my clothes, and is only 9 stone. Don't get it at all!

foreverondiet · 30/03/2012 16:44

Depends on height.

I am only 5 4 and weight 8 10 (and quite muscular) and wear 8-10 ie 8 in M&S / next 8 in whistles more designer shops.

At 10 7 would be a size 12-14.

But can see someone taller with good muscle tone could be 8-10 at 10 7.

OlympicEater · 30/03/2012 16:52

I'm 5' 10, my friend is 5' 1, so considerably shorter. We both weigh the same, we are both hourglass shapes and we both wear the same size clothes - we borrow each others so I know that we wear the same size.

Really can't explain it.

AmberNectarine · 30/03/2012 17:20

This is definitely true. This morning I was trying on some of my pre-DC jeans. They all either fit or are too big, even the ones that were too small then. I am 6lbs heavier than I was when I fell pg with DC1. I haven't grown as far as I'm aware, but I am bf so probably carrying weight there, plus I have accumulated some muscle, so a heavier version of me can wear smaller clothes than a lighter version. I'm a pretty universal 10.

supernannyisace · 30/03/2012 17:32

So to sum it up - what you actually weigh is a load of crap. It doesn't matter. What does matter is how your body looks *- no one can see your bathroom scales or, in fact, the label in your blouse!

I weigh a lot - more than i think I should and have only just realised that I need to let go of the weight thing. I am 5'9" - size 12, occasionally a 14 but weight just shyof 12 stone. I do a lot of running -and hold muscle well. Sturdy would be a good description :) ha ha ha. But I do wear mostly size 12.

I do remember going for a medical at a new GPs- and when the nurse weighed me I was just over 12 stone and she informed me that I was in the overweight category - and what would I like to do about it.? I was quite upset at first. Hm..

I was 10 stone just a few years ago, but I did no sport/exercise at all. I lived on coffee and cigs - and wasn't very healthy at all. I think I look better as I am now, but would like to see the scales show a little lower - I just can't help that.

  • what is actually important is how healthy you are and happy in your self...
Ephiny · 30/03/2012 17:34

"I'm 5 foot nowt, weight 10stone 4 (have done since I was about 15!) and am an 8, some places a 6, would buy a 10 for a loose look."

Not saying you're lying or anything, but this sounds almost incredible to me. I'm a couple of inches taller than you, over 2 stone lighter, and usually wear a 10, would need a 12 for a 'loose look'. In Topshop in fact a 12 is a bit tight on me especially around the hips. I've never been a 6, even when I weighed 7 stone Confused.

I would imagine at over 10st, I'd be something like a 16, would definitely be quite overweight.

I guess it just goes to show how much variation there is between different people/builds! It's really puzzling sometimes...
