Why have I only just discovered primer?!

Just used some for the first time today, and OMG! It has taken 5 years off me, at least.

Yay! Grin

Sudocreme isn't just for bums, it's for all manner of things and is a barrier cream - so it it doesn't really take quantum physics levels of genius to make the leap to using it as primer. Grin

Vicks on fungal infections, however...!

hotheels · 16/03/2012 20:12

Can you just use the own brand version of sudocreme? (Tesco/Asda nappy cream) excited to try as have loads of that in cupboard.

Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2012 20:13

Isn't there a Waitrose one? Bottom butter or something?

CuttedUpPear · 16/03/2012 20:16

I don't understand. as someone who doesn't wear either, what is the difference between primer and foundation?

I have some Clarins beauty flash but it makes me shiny.
I have some Benefit Porefessional but I just use it where the pores are big, not sure if this is primer or not.

I don't want to wear a lot of makeup so could I wear just primer? IME foundation makes my skin look like the surface of the moon.

virgil · 16/03/2012 20:18

I did sudocreme today too. It made a massive difference. At six in the evening my foundation applied twelve hours earlier looks as though I've just put it on! It's fantastic Grin

effingwotsits · 16/03/2012 20:20

I did the sudocrem thing today and my skin looked so much smoother. Can't believe I didn't know this Smile

mosschops30 · 16/03/2012 20:23

Have only recently tried primer (after the groomed thread) i got the BD one and it is amazing. I still look good at 4pm Grin
it gives you an even skin tone so your foundation then looks perfect.
I am totally sold

Bangtastic · 16/03/2012 20:45

Bloody FUMING, in my rush today, I ended up picking up and paying for the bloody tester pot of No7 anti shine primer! Luckily it is quite full, and I made 2 separate purchases so got 2 vouchers that will pay for another... but still!

To make it worse, I did the same with my concealer but the cashier noticed that, but neither of us noticed the 'please test' sticker and lack of seal on the primer Hmm

virgil · 16/03/2012 20:47

Take it back bang. If it has the sticker on it they'll just swap it surely?

Bangtastic · 16/03/2012 20:51

Truth is I can't be arsed Grin nearest Boots is in the city centre 7 miles away and I'm not planning another trip there until my bank card has fully recovered from today! Held it up to the light and it is pretty much full, if it wasn't I'd go back so... [lazy cow]

shinecrazydiamond · 16/03/2012 20:59

Bleeee to putting Sudocrem on your face... might be OK once or twice but it's pretty harsh and won't do your skin any favours I shouldn't think.

Laura mercier is, imo, the best primer, bar none. A cheaper option is the new Bourjois flower one.. Also worth a mention is Benefit Dr Feelgood [ and that's the first and last time you'll see me recommend a Benefit product. ]

Bangtastic · 16/03/2012 21:01

Whats this BB cream type stuff I saw today? The tube said something about looking 'bare faced', and it was a light purpley shade and then blended to nothing Shock scared me, stuck it back on the shelf but am still intrigued by it 7 hours later...

virgil · 16/03/2012 21:12

How can sudocreme be harsh shiny? It's for babies bottoms!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 16/03/2012 21:19

ooh Ive got sudacrem, will have a go tomorrow morning too. Grin

What harm can it do?

shinecrazydiamond · 16/03/2012 21:22

I predict it will make your face dry at the very least.

Don't say you weren't warned Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 16/03/2012 21:45

Bang - I bought some BB cream as well, and that is shite I have decided. It is very brown and doesn't eliminate imperfections I didn't think.

So if anyone wants to try a tube, for Normal/Dry skin in Fair, then it is yours!

A pharmacist once described sudocrem to me as 'industrial' so i can't imagine it is going to be a good beauty product. I might try it tomorrow, just in case though Grin

Right, it's time to take the plunge! I don't think I've ever walked down the beauty isle at the supermarket, or any where else for that matter. However I have promised a friend that I will have a go at wearing makeup.
What are the top 3 best value brands I need to look out for at Tesco/Asda today? I have slightly oily skin I think.
Do I need moisturiser as well or can I start with just primer?

shinecrazydiamond · 17/03/2012 09:17

Apricot - well moisturiser would fall under a skin care regime, so cleanse, tone and moisturise first. Wait ten mins to allow moisturiser to sink in and then apply a small amount of primer.

Can't advise on tesco or Asda though or what's in there. If you are new to make up though, you may want to consider easing yourself in gently

Himalaya · 17/03/2012 09:24

I feel a purchase coming on...Grin

BettyBathroom · 17/03/2012 10:27

I'm trying the anti-chaffing gel idea - bought some Lanacane yesterday for £6.....have only ever used Bare Minerals primer, so that's what I'll be comparing it to, hope it works!.

CuttedUpPear · 17/03/2012 10:55

I still don't understand....see post above

CalamityKate · 17/03/2012 11:04

Surely though, when you apply your foundation, the primer gets all mixed up with the foundation? Or does it sink in first? Or set - like painting undercoat on a wall then letting it dry before emulsion-ing?

Never bought primer in my life but this thread has got me intrigued.

I apply my foundation with my fingers - will that matter?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/03/2012 11:12

Pear - what foundation are you using? When you say the surface of the moon, do you mean pale, or with craters? Grin

If you have problems with evenness then primer would help with that. If too pale then you need to go to a makeup counter (Bobbi Brown is the best IMO) and find a shade that suits your skin tone.

Calamity - it doesn't get mixed up, it stays as a layer and foundation slides on top.
I use my fingers too.
