because they do, in fact, make you look pregnant. When you are not.
And lead to an all round awkward conversation.

( fuckers)

and there i was thinking i was looking quite thin and stylish and floaty ( collegues said i looked nice, family said i looked nice - they all lied)

I'm wearing one in the office right now. It never even occurred to me that people might think I'm pregnant but now you've got me worried...

SailorVie · 02/06/2011 10:48

After being very afraid of the maxi-dress look for years (I'm a size 18), this summer I took the plunge and purchased this one:

It looks terrible on the hanger, but when you put it on, something magical happens...and it looks great. I think what helps is that it is slightly cut on the bias, and the tiers start at hip height. The skirt bit is lovely and floaty but not too voluminous IYSWIM.

I'm 5ft 2 and look ridiculously small in all that material - the mid calf look is much more flattering.

LaWeasel · 02/06/2011 11:04

Okay, so my sister is about to buy me a maxi dress - but I am pregnant, does that mean I can get away with it?! I'm skinny and 5'4" but getting bumpy already.

bettydoc · 02/06/2011 11:24

I ordered a stone/stripe maxi from Wallis Petite range last week. It was enormous! Had to go back. Quite disappointed as they're claiming it's for someone 5'3" and under.

ENormaSnob · 02/06/2011 12:47

Is it just me that thinks they look really dated now?

I have loads but won't be wearing them this year

Quite like the vest jersey ones though.

Reb3cca · 02/06/2011 14:03

I love my maxis, I have bout 8 and wear them all the time. I am pregnant - but have no bump what so ever and a size 8. I have to get them taken up to make them the right length as I'm only 5'4" but i love love love maxis!

GetOrf · 02/06/2011 14:24

Ithink they look dated as well - to me they scream 'scouse girl at the races'

TrillianAstra · 02/06/2011 14:26

I find the best way to convince people that you are not pregnant is to go to the pub.

Capiche · 02/06/2011 22:08

i just think they are the perfect summer wear

i wore my huuuuge tent like one today and it felt really nice in the sunshine

i swear more people smiled at me

Capiche · 02/06/2011 22:10

this is it hugely tent ish although it's an 8

Soups · 02/06/2011 22:14

"I find the best way to convince people that you are not pregnant is to go to the pub"

or walk down the street, with a can of your fav cola drink, hidden in a brown paper bag.

I saw a woman on the tube today in one. It was one of those with cups sewn in, but the cup seam came half-way down her bust, and then dropped straight down. She looked much larger than she probably was, and the line-on-bust always looks hideously uncomfortable to me (I used to do it years ago until a friend pointed out it was a functional, not decorative feature...)
