because they do, in fact, make you look pregnant. When you are not.
And lead to an all round awkward conversation.

( fuckers)

and there i was thinking i was looking quite thin and stylish and floaty ( collegues said i looked nice, family said i looked nice - they all lied)

OP posts:

i think they are primarily beach wear really, a bit like sarongs - remember them!

i have a love hate relationship with my maxi dress, it looks great on the hanger beautiful pattern etc, very very comfortable to wear, but i just know i don't look right in it!

MadameAdelaide · 01/06/2011 17:28

i am saving mine just in case i do ever have another baby and i would wear it with pride then! (as long as it was a summer pregnancy!)

Mahraih · 01/06/2011 17:35

I used to love maxis - I had zero boobage and zero stomach, and am a shade over 5'10" so they worked.

But they worked FAR better when I was pregnant. Beautiful. Now, ruined for me. I'll wait until I'm pregnant again!

busyboysmum · 01/06/2011 17:40

Hee hee this is very funny - I remember driving past a wedding last summer and all the girls were in maxi dresses and I remember thinking you are going to be able to date those wedding photos to a couple of years!

I think they look too dressy for the daytime and I honestly have only seen a couple of people who I thought looked fab in them.

I have inherited one with a bag of maternity clothes I got given (yes, I am pregnant) so might try it out over this coming heatwave - I am sure they are very cooling to wear.

MadameAdelaide · 01/06/2011 17:45

i've only ever worn mine in public when on holiday, i've nearly worn it here in public once or twice but bottled it at the last minute and changed! it would have to be really really hot for me to wear it i think.
yes, best to make the most of wearing them when pg!

barbie007 · 01/06/2011 18:07

I love maxis and have so many of them. The key is wearing them with wedges and chosing ones that don't have much gathering beneath the breasts
They're perfect for hiding less than perfect legs and bums....not that mine aren't perfect :)

ledkr · 01/06/2011 18:14

Im 5,7 and am a bit fat due to recent baby, but i have small boobs,i find i have to have a tube shape rather than abig tierd floaty thing and the material has to be good too.I think this maybe an item which can only be nice if good quality ie well cut and good fabric.

Ormirian · 01/06/2011 18:15

I love 'em. And if they make me look fat it's probably because I am (a bit) so that's OK.

travailtotravel · 01/06/2011 18:21

I love Maxi dresses but I just cannot make myself wear them when I know they make me look way more mahoosive than I am. And I am mahoosive. I need a dress to be friendlier to the (few) positive bits there are not get all buddy buddy with the really lumpy bits.

rosieposey · 01/06/2011 18:30

Im fat (22/24) and i bought this www.asos.com/Asos/Asos-Curve-Salon-Floral-Glitter-Maxi-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=1538192&cid=9577&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=-1&sort=-1&clr=Multi and it looks lovely with a bolero, a tan and some sandals - of course it makes me look fat because i am Grin but sometimes maxis can look great on plus sizes, im not a believer in wearing tents but maxis in the summer are a perfect cover up.

FoundWanting · 01/06/2011 18:39

Whoever linked to the BooHoo maxi, I saw a woman wearing the orange one in town today. She wasn't very tall, but looked really nice and nothing like as fat as her quite skinny friend who was in 'paper-bag' waist shorts.

So, the answer is: make sure your friends make crapper fashion choices than you. Grin

CamperFan · 01/06/2011 18:47

I only wear maxi dresses when I am pg, and obviously so.

Fleecy · 01/06/2011 18:47

I think the trick is to wear one that's nipped in at the waist/belted/fitted jersey. No mistake then! So that Warehouse one would be fine.

I am pregnant and still wearing all mine from last year - the jersey ones just stretch around the bump and the floaty one didn't get much of an airing because it made me look bigger but is perfect for pregnancy Smile

Love that dress choo and agree it will look amazing on you. Nasty ole' MW didn't send me the 40% thing. Boo!

DesperateHousewife21 · 01/06/2011 19:05

I like my maxi dresses, makes a change from mini dresses! Im 5"8 and a size 6/8.

LittleMissFlustered · 01/06/2011 19:46

I have half a dozen maxi dresses and they make me look like a galleon in full sail. I don't give a toss though. They are comfy, I like them and I really do fail to see why as a fat bird I shouldn't be allowed to wear a summer frock if I want :o

WoTmania · 01/06/2011 19:50

I think a lot depends on back size too. I'm a 30D so the empire line starts at a small point and skims over hips. The H&M dress (in the sludgey colour not the blue) is the on I live in.

Sorry Grin

WoTmania · 01/06/2011 19:51

Grin @ LittleMissFlustered absolutely! they are very comfy!

nunnie · 01/06/2011 20:07

I tried my first and last one on today, I am pregnant and thought it would be a good option. Looked hideous, I looked like Julian Clary with a bump.
Then I remembered I haven't worn a dress since my wedding day which was in 2002, and prior to that it was for school.

I have seen people that look nice in them, I have to say I haven't actually noticed anyone looking bad in one apart from in the mirror today.

Should say I am 5ft 8 and a size 10 with very small boobs.

I will be wearing my tunic and bootcut jeans from now on.

Georgimama · 01/06/2011 20:09

The fact I am fat makes me look fat, to be fair to the maxi dress. And the fact I am pregnant as well. The maxi dress just makes me fat, pregnant and comfortable.

I have bought this one and it actually drapes beautifully and will still do so when not quite so fat/pregnant. The jersey is really heavy and there isn't a lot of flounce which helps (sizing is generous if the link inspires you - a preggers size 16 only needs a large).

crappymoodymoo · 01/06/2011 20:28

im up the duff and my mum has now taken to trying to force me into them lol she loves them but im not too pregnant i can still pass for a bit fatter than normal :D maybe when im 5 and a half 6 months tho if the sun ever comes back i'll be lucky lol

MissBeehiving · 01/06/2011 20:35

I was a maxi non believer until I bought one that feckin fitted. Grin The long tiered patterned floaty things do make the wearer look fatter than they are but the stretchy jersy ones are most flattering IMO

basingstoke · 01/06/2011 20:41

I have this one and I love it. I am tall, but not svelte, and I cannot wear an empire line style, but this one is good!

TrillianAstra · 01/06/2011 20:42

Empire line tops make you look pregnant.

Empire line dresses that are not maxi make you look pregnant.

So yes, empire line maxi dresses make you look pregnant.

But it's not the maxi part that is doing the pregnant-looking!

pointythings · 01/06/2011 20:55

I bought two today. I look fat in them, but that is because I am fat. My DDs think I look like a princess in them, and I am going to be living in them when it starts getting hot. Comfort before beauty, every time.

Capiche · 01/06/2011 20:58

i wear them all the time and i am over forty
i think you just have to give up on looking thin and enjoy them - i am 5 8 and size 8-10 but dont wear heels with them
