because they do, in fact, make you look pregnant. When you are not.
And lead to an all round awkward conversation.

( fuckers)

and there i was thinking i was looking quite thin and stylish and floaty ( collegues said i looked nice, family said i looked nice - they all lied)

i have got one maxi dress which i love because it keeps me nice and cool when it is very hot BUT i really dare not leave the house in it, i could model for a maternity catalogue in it, i look at least six months gone in it!

i keep it as my 'wear around the house when uncomfortably hot' dress.

really i think you can only get away with wearing one if you actually are pregnant

notyummy · 01/06/2011 12:52

Choo - you will look AMAZING in that.

MumblingRagDoll · 01/06/2011 12:53

Choogirl with a budget like your dress will take....its unsusrprising it's going to look good...that is a lovely dress....but nearly 300 pounds!

ClaireDeLoon · 01/06/2011 12:56

I saw someone who looked lovely in one the other day. She was lithe, tanned, 5' 7" ish and about 17.

redderthanred · 01/06/2011 12:58

It does seem to take an age to find one that looks right I think.

I have a fab one from www.petiteaffair.co.uk - the black and cream abstract maxi dress. I think I look good in it, and I feel good in it! I think its the weight of it that helps too - its a heavy jersey fabric.

I am 5 foot 1 inch and a size 10.

They usually swamp me, but this one seems to be good!

HappyAsIAm · 01/06/2011 13:01

aaah redderthanred, I think its the fabric thats the problem. A heavy jersey is better than cotton in a maxi, imo.

MadameAdelaide · 01/06/2011 13:01

maxi dresses are nice in theory but in reality rarely work, also i think the way they are floor length makes them look a bit like a nighty

notyummy · 01/06/2011 13:03

I think it must be the boobs, because it doesn't look flouncy. Does ii hang off the top of your boobs and look a bit 'tenty', rather than skimming? I guess that could be a problem.

CHOOGIRL · 01/06/2011 13:04

Lol Mumbling I got 40% off at My-Wardrobe and had credit in my pay-pal from some bits I sold on ebay so using my fashion maths the dress was actually free Grin

ElectricSoftParade · 01/06/2011 13:06

I love that dress Choogirl. Sadly, I would still look like a sack of tatties but hope you look glorious in it!

bunnymother · 01/06/2011 13:06

"The trick is to wear the correct maxi for your shape, colouring, etc." - totally agree. I saw a lady wearing one (whilst I was waddling along heavily pregnant - was so Envy its untrue) and she looked incredible. It was a slim line long black jersey maxi. Which she wore w some slim gold bangles. And a perfect figure (truly, she was stunning. Again, I was so Envy) and golden skin and blonde hair. I had to compliment her on how wonderful she looked. She probably was all [pity] as she watched me waddle off in my maternity gear Grin.

MABS · 01/06/2011 13:06

love that dress choogirl

KatieWatie · 01/06/2011 13:09

I'm actually pregnant and even I refuse to wear one!!

whereseveryonegone · 01/06/2011 13:12

Is be happy to look pregnant, I was thinner then than I am now. With most things if it isn't non iron I don't wear it.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 01/06/2011 13:15

Op - yes, me too!

BulletWithAName · 01/06/2011 13:17

I think maxi dresses, especially empire-line ones do nothing for a larger framed woman. They have a tent-like effect. Much better to wear something slightly form-fitting to show you have a shape than to try and mask it IMO.

smartyparts · 01/06/2011 13:26

I think floaty maxis and wedge sandals look utterly ridiculous - only flats look OK.

Slim fitting ones look OK with wedges though.

You have to be tall and slim to carry them off. They make anyone else look dumpy.

redderthanred · 01/06/2011 13:26

No, it goes in under my boobs ( 36DD) but its elasticated under the boobs which i reckon is why it looks a bit maternity like.

Maxi dresses need to be made of slinky drapey/jersey fabric. And shaped at the waist. And be long enough.

Those horrid stiff flowery cotton nightie type dresses with the thin straps are another animal altogether.

eandz · 01/06/2011 13:29

can I please ask your opinion on this one?

www.warehouse.co.uk/tribal-scarf-print-maxi-dress/Maxi-Dresses/warehouse/fcp-product/304364

i bought it a few weeks ago and I've been wearing it all around. my husband and sister do compliment me, but after reading this thread I feel a bit insecure.

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/06/2011 13:29

I love Choo's dress!

I am short only 5ft and prefer the jersey slinkier ones - they look nice and lets face it are a practical option when its hot and your legs are still white.

My niece is 19 and has fab arms and tiny waist but slightly bigger bottom half which she is very conscious of - I bought her one last year from warehouse which is patterned cotton with a halter neck and very skimming type skirt - she looks amazing in it.

Its like most things - you have to look around for ones that suit your shape. Especially if you're not a 5ft 10 size 6. But I do hate it when people say only tall/slim people can wear certain things - I mean what are the rest of us meant to wear - a tunic and some bootcut jeans? Wink

MissBeehiving · 01/06/2011 13:33

I think every teenager should have an aunt like Mrs CB. Smile

Kiwinyc · 01/06/2011 13:35

I am 5ft 1" and have two Boden ones, that are heavyish jersey and drape and skim nicely over lumps and bumps. I always get compliments when i'm wearing them so I think they must be ok - am size 12, and not at all big on top. Jersey fabric definitely works better that a light floaty cotton imo.

eandz · 01/06/2011 13:37

will no one answer my question?
