can someone tell me what is so bad about waterfall cardigans...

Seen various comments on here along the lines of burn it and hideous.

What is so bad about them. I always think cardigans can risk looking mumsy but think these look nice and go with anything from dresses to jeans.

Someone enlighten me...

Unless it's a good quality material they look horrible on me. I've just bought two for discrete bfing but they are more of a wrap around that can dangle loose to make a waterfall.

cobbledtogether · 04/02/2011 09:16

I have a red one and a grey one and I'm sat in work wearing one at the moment.

Technically with being a size 20 with big boobs they should look awful, but actually they go really well in my work wardrobe.

Like everything fashion - its just a matter of personal taste and knowing what suits yourself.

MoChan · 04/02/2011 09:36

I dislike them. I have always thought that any clothing with that kind of fussy element is generally really ageing. For me, at least. I wouldn't wear one now (I'm 38) but I wouldn't have worn one when I was 25 either for fear of the same.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 04/02/2011 09:41

I like 'em. Also have a penchant for asymmetric hems. So there.

MoChan · 04/02/2011 09:41

Boyfriend cardigans are just ones that are longish and a bit over-sized looking - so it looks as though you might have borrowed it from your boyfriend. So they tell me.

MadameOvary · 04/02/2011 09:57

Like most styles in the right cut and fabric they can be very elegant, but the market is saturated with them right now. I liked them when I first saw them but not now, have seen too many awful ones.

Please help, I have read this thread looking for clues
What IS a waterfall cardi? I love cardis I night have one, I don't know!

cornflower123 · 04/02/2011 10:44

Kitty - see earlier link to Wallis one (sorry, not good at links myself). Key features - drapey, no buttons, long(ish). I really liked them a year or so ago. I have 2 - one of which I wear quite a lot. The other is too long and floaty for me (possibly ok in summer?). Wouldn't ever wear to work though, as I don't think they're structured enough. Can look like comfort blankets, especially when sitting down! They can be quite flattering provided worn with skinny jeans and fitted top underneath I think.

However, they are everywhere now, and hate it when I see people wearing them with long calf-length skirt or baggy trousers.......... uuugh.

BerylStreep · 04/02/2011 11:05

Bootleg trousers look big on the thigh, because some of us have big thighs. The bootleg helps balance it out. If we wear skinny jeans or straight, it makes us look like we have chicken drumsticks for legs.

I own 2 waterfall tops, one I bought in a moment of madness, and one my sister gave me. Neither of them flatter me - they just make me bigger than I am. They would probably be lovely on someone who is a different shape though.

For those on the thread who love them, does anyone want mine? Seriously?

Happy to post them for free, just to not have the guilt of not wearing them.

Both Fenn Wright Manson, one long fine linen knit, black, size L, the other waist length black wool, with a built in top below, size L. PM me if you are interested.

Ladies - something wonderful could come out of this thread. We could start a cardi swap shop.

I wear mine wrapped and belted with my bump sticking out underneath. It's the only way :)

ruddynorah · 04/02/2011 11:10

They are horrid. They look like you are wearing a saggy blanket. If you're a bit fat, they make you look fatter.

cornflower123 · 04/02/2011 11:11

Yes, cardi swap sounds good! Boyfriend cardis are the most hideous things ever IMHO. Far worse than waterfall ones (on me anyway, slimish but pear shaped). Mind you, thinking about it, the only other cardis I want to get rid of are 3 dreadful Boden ones (2 are bobbling badly and need to go to charity shop!).

lovelymumma · 04/02/2011 11:12

Can we all stop having a go at the over 50s,Im soon to 39,but we'll all be there in the blink of an eye!

takethatlady · 04/02/2011 11:15

Honestly, you need to wrap them over and wear a nice big belt at the waist. Then they make your boobs look shapely, tuck your waist in, skim over your bum, and give you the perfect hourglass. I am usually a size 10 and am slightly pearshaped, but I'm 20 weeks pregnant at the moment so I'm more buxom and bellified than usual. I bought mine for later stages of pregnancy, but in the meantime the belt above my bump makes the cardigan look fitted and tailored.

Well, at least I think so. Maybe I look like a fat frump and I'm just kidding myself!!!

cornflower123 · 04/02/2011 11:19

Will have to try belting mine I think to possibly get extra wear from them. The whole cardi issue is a bit of a minefield, especially heading toward 50 myself (46 next week). Please can someone link to some 'nice' cardis??

kittybuttoon · 04/02/2011 11:25

Don't think you'd catch cardi queen Michelle Obama in a waterfall?

And there are a lot of them about. Wouldn't recommend spending a lot of dosh on them as they're going to date.

thanks cornflowerSmile
I love cardis because I can't be bothered to take jumpers on and off. Cardis offer better temp control and that is true.Wink

AngelDog · 04/02/2011 12:24

I love cardis for the same reasons as kittywise.

Waterfall ones were great when I was new to bf and a bit nervous in public.

As long as I don't wrap them over at the waist they look okay IMO.

theDudesmummy · 04/02/2011 12:50

I'm 47, I wore them last winter when getting over pregnancy weight and was 15kg up on my normal weight (hiding the big bum especially). I didn't think they looked particularly good but I looked even worse without! I have not worn them this winter as am trying to get back to my more normal style of dressing (still struggling with getting back to prepreg weight though!)

charitygirl · 04/02/2011 12:54

A man in my office has started wearing an only slightly butchified one. I am ignoring it.

GlynistheGimmer · 04/02/2011 12:57

am i the only person who likes them because they look lovely and floaty and dramatic then?

Confused

thought so Grin

[shrugs]

KikiJane · 04/02/2011 13:10

Nope, I like floaty and dramatic too Grin
