can someone tell me what is so bad about waterfall cardigans...

Seen various comments on here along the lines of burn it and hideous.

What is so bad about them. I always think cardigans can risk looking mumsy but think these look nice and go with anything from dresses to jeans.

Someone enlighten me...

Carol Jackson wears them, they look hideous on everyone, and also like a small child has been yanking at your hem.

They do go nicely with boot cut jeans and mid, block heeled black boots though........

CointreauVersial · 03/02/2011 13:30

I think it depends on the cardigan shape. I have a couple that are quite long-line and slimming, but are waterfall from the hips down, iyswim.

But I've seen others that are waterfall from the chest, and those make you look like a massive big blob.

I do find the dippy hem irritating when I'm wearing a coat, though. One of mine is so long, I can't wear it anything on top of it, or it looks ridiculous.

domesticslattern · 03/02/2011 13:39

If you are wearing one and aged under 50, I will always assume you are pg.
In fact, I insulted a total stranger only recently with this assumption. Blush

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 03/02/2011 13:43

I've a dozen of them and I'm a size 18 with massive norks.

I look fabulous and not remotely preggers.

Ooh, Cointreau, you're not wearing coats are you? Oh, how naffola - they're so frumpy.

WotzNotNot · 03/02/2011 14:12

"50" is that nork size or age? 50 keeps being mentioned as some sort of authorised measure of approval. I need to know, because I'll wait a few years or get chicken fillers.

PlumSykes · 03/02/2011 14:25

Classic Trinny and Suze school-run look for the clueless.

Waterfall cardi
tunic top
chunky beads
bootleg jeans
heeled boots

Everso dull, but marginally better than tracksuit trousers and trainers.

whoneedssleepanyway · 03/02/2011 14:42

hmmmm so seem to be a lot of mixed views.

i think as well i am slightly confused now about what a waterfall cardigan is, I have a fine knit grey cardigan from Oasis is waist length that falls open at the front with some drapey bits, but it definitely does not cover my stomach so I am not sure how this is supposed to be a good garment for disguising things....

I always think cardigans can look so frumpy so what would you suggest as an alternative as this to wear for work with dresses etc as air-con in my office even in summer means to cold to bare your arms....

also what on earth is one of the ruffley scarves everyone is going on about...Confused

I would never wear that get up would much prefer trackies and trainers.Decent one like gap and converse but never a chunky bead cardi comobo and I am 45

TrillianAstra · 03/02/2011 15:50

I think I am confused over what one is too.

I could not hide pregnancy in mine, so I will asume what I have isnot a waterfall.

DonaAna · 03/02/2011 15:51

Very rarely they flatter anyone. I'm tallish and stick thin and they look just awful on me. And I'm also just bored - they are everywhere, why should I be interested?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 03/02/2011 15:55

They look like they have had an accident in teh washing machine.

GlynistheGimmer · 03/02/2011 16:08

waterfall

can someone please tell me what a boyfriend cardigan is [pleading]

whoneedssleepanyway · 03/02/2011 16:09

Glynis, I think it is basically like a v necked school cardigan but mega long so it covers your bum...

There is nothing wrong with waterfall cardigans, they make excellent teatowels when you are in a hurry.

TracyK · 03/02/2011 16:16

I have a waterfall waistcoat - and I think it is flattering. The wavy bit down the middle/front draws the eye inwards surely?

b/f cardis are shapeless and for the skinny only.

1234ThumbWar · 03/02/2011 17:51

The biggest problem with them is that they are so much shorter at the back, so the larger lady wears them thinking she looks great. From the back she looks all backside. Ghastly things

polyhymnia · 03/02/2011 17:54

Have also seen them with opposite problem - long at back but camel's toe exposed to public view at front!

1234ThumbWar · 03/02/2011 17:58

nice

upthehill · 03/02/2011 18:02

Is this a waterfall cardi? Wallis one I tried it on the other day and thought it was pretty flattering - gave me a nice waist! I am being totally mumsy?

MerylStrop · 03/02/2011 18:09

Aswith most things it ain't what you wear, it's the way that you wear it.

Carol off of Eastenders wears them a lot and looks dowdy as hell.

I have a DKNY cosy and a ted baker rip off version and they look nice - both made of lovely silk cashmere mix knit, and can wear them in lots of ways. They are great when you are up the duff. But they're a bugger for dangling in the dishwasher.

dustythedolphin · 03/02/2011 18:50

I really like them (but then I am mumsy). I have a gorgeous flattering choc brown one from Pamela Scott.

Trouble is that it doesn't keep me very warm as it has no buttons

putthekettleon · 03/02/2011 19:16

Oh god, my staple wardrobe for the last 6 months has been waterfall cardis and H&M breastfeeding tops- I'm only 31, does that make me mumsy?! I thought I had perfected the 'hiding baby weight' look Grin

I have recently started wearing them with skinny jeans and boots though rather than maternity jeans and clapped out trainers, so I must get some points for that...
