Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

That’s nothing to be proud of though, it’s just creating division. The English don’t generally care ime and wouldn’t have a strong desire for Scotland to lose, they simply wouldn’t care either way. I don’t think the hostility is the same the other way around.

I've had loads of hostility online from English folk in general and footie fans. It goes both ways. It gets even worse if I mention liking Germany too.

There is a lot of hostility from many English people towards anyone and anything that isn't English. Maybe you just don't see it because of where you live. Or because you don't want to see it. Again, if you'd read this thread you would have seen examples of it. I don't understand your comment about being proud and creating division. Who is being proud of what?

As I’ve explained, I live in Scotland and my DH is Scottish. My opinion is based on what I see and hear. My DH can’t understand the hostility either and gets frustrated the way some people carry on.

Saying the hostility isn’t about jealousy and that it was deeper rooted as if that justifies it….

I agree there is hostility from
English fans too and it’s equally ridiculous. I don’t it’s to the same level the other way around though.

Not just English footie fans, gebetal hostility from English people on a whole host of topics. It's quite sad.

No one is trying to justify anything. Why would they have to justify their feelings and opinions? They don't need anyone's approval. People are just explaining that for many people this has nothing to do with sport.

Like with your in-laws, it's perfectly possible to like people as individuals while also not liking a country because of what that country represents to them. I'm not a fan of America as a whole, but I do like many many Americans as people. I don't particularly like Russia either, but the Russians I do know are fantastic.

Re: football. Scotland isn't one homogenous hive mind. Some like England. Some hate England. And some are indifferent. I'd say most fall under indifferent. They support the team they like or have a link to. Being a neighbour of England might not be a strong enough link to support England. I supported the Netherlands because my best friend is Dutch. I have no links to Spain so I'll be supporting England later. But if they win I'll be turning the TV off for the next 3 months because I'm not English so the crowing will be insufferable.

3 months is an exaggeration, but yes, I will not be watching TV because I have no interest in being bombarded by the England-centric news, programs, and documentaries that will follow.

They were showing the 1966 match yesteday on Ch4.....🤪🤪🤪

You understand that there is a difference between explaining why some feel they way they do and justifying it? Especially on a forum on a thread disgussibg why?

An under exaggeration. Its still a dangerous drinking game to have a shot every time 1966 is mentioned 😂

How utterly ridiculous. You do know you can change channels? Or that not every single tv show is made to appeal to you personally?

I doubt they will win, but if they happen to, then I expect there will be thousands that will enjoy that kind of programming.

but I’ve agreed with a lot of what you say. I’ve said it myself. I said about them being jealous last night and as you pointed out, that was the wrong term. I acknowledged that and gave further explanation as to why it’s deeper rooted and not just to do with sport.

😂😂😂

I'm surprised it's not part of the national curriculum.

The Industrial Revolution
WW1
WW2
The 1966 World Cup

It was colorised - hubby watched it and I saw a bit. The difference in spectator and media clothing was very obvious (more suits, less casual), there was no advertising, and lots of folk had union instead of england flags. The anti-German feeling would have been much more evident in 1966, playing against W Germany too, I'd imagine.

Yes, Engish people. Of which I am not one of. Nor do I live in England. Yet it still dominates TV here.

And the players were only paid the equivalent of £300 a week back in those days. Not the tens of thousands they are paid now. It was about the sport then. Not the money, fame, and dodgy diving like it is now.

That's nice, dear. I will be watching the game. I have no need to watch the many reruns and commentaries, nor the history of the England football team which everyone already knows because they have been bleating on about it for the past 60 years.

Great. The Olympics starts soon and it's Team GB there, so you can watch that instead.

There is an underlying tone (in general) that it’s acceptable to dislike England, whether that be sports or in other circumstances….
