Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

They’re good enough to get in the final, so pretty good then ?
Scotland are memorable for being thrashed on the pitch.

They definitely had an easier route to the final than some countries, for example Germany. Over the years they've not won that much compared to other European countries such as France, Spain, Germany. On the world stage they're not bad, but pretty much everyone knows they're in the final down to lots of luck as well as some good moments.

OK, I'll go out on a limb and say "most". Walk down any high street in Scotland tomorrow and ask 100 people if they want England to win and I'd say most of them would say "NO". And it's not small-mindedness on our part, quite the contrary, it's the small-minded attitudes forced upon US (as explained multiple times by various people on this thread) that's the cause.

What’s your definition of “most” out of your hypothetical 100, seeing as you’re bringing numbers into it? 70/80/90/99? Big regional difference I’d say too. The more Nat the more anti -English sentiment.

Cozylozy · 14/07/2024 00:13

No as a Scot this is the consensus

redfacebigdisgrace · 14/07/2024 00:14

And just because others are small- minded doesn’t mean you need to stoop to their level. You can rise above it. I prefer to see the good in England, the English, our neighbours. Like a lot of Scots I have some English ancestry (an eight, to go with my eighth Irish and the rest Scottish!)

How many English people are there? Maybe 50 million or so. Some of us are incredibly arrogant, some of us are incredibly humble. Some of us are British before we are English, some the other way round. Some want Scotland and the other UK teams to do well, some enjoy it when they lose. Some think "10 German bombers" is a hilarious song, others are absolutely mortified by it. Guess what - the same type of mix is found in other nationalities. The people who are writing generalised crap like "the English need to stop being arrogant" are being ridiculous. How can you expect a whole country not to have some arrogant voices (usually the loudest, sadly) among its people? If you don't think the Scots are capable of similar arrogance, have a listen to the lyrics to the 1978 world cup song "Ally's tartan army". Every bit as conceited and cringeworthy as anything the English have ever come up with. Sure, pull against us all you like out of friendly rivalry, but enough of the hate.

But the arrogance is distilled via the media and broadcast to a UK audience as if we are all English. Your English arrogance is forced down our throats as we sit in our Scottish, Welsh, Irish living rooms watching a British (not an English) broadcast - why is that so difficult* *to understand?

Any anti-English sentiment in my area is more related to folk moving here and then trying to change the location to be more like where they moved from - it's directed at people relocating from all locations, however a fair few English folk seem to move here and so may feel it's anti-English (when it's not). I wouldn't say it's particularly related to political leanings. Scots do get fed up when we're told that England subsidises us, mainly because that's not actually true. We also get fed up when English folk suggest wanting independence is because we hate English people, because that's also not generally true.

Who I support in a football match is my choice - supporting Spain or Germany doesn't mean I hate England, its just means I'm more drawn to the other teams.

Er, at least 51 out of 100? 😆

I'm Scottish and I support England.

Lots of Scots do.

And lots don't.

English arrogance ?
That’s a huge generalisation isn’t it?
As for being forced down your throat, surely if a programme is that bad you have the remote control at your fingertips ?

It’s interesting because when you google that’s not what people think when you say most. I would agree that logically it is more than half but apparently most people understand it to mean 70-95% which is what I was thinking you meant.

ClickClack300 · 14/07/2024 00:23

Im married to a Scotsman and I live in Scotland. I have a Scottish child. Some of my best friends are Scottish and I adore 🥰 them. I love my Scottish in-laws and we get on very well so much so that my DFIL forgot who he was sitting with last week in a cafe and said “I’m sick of fucking hearing about the football and England - I hope they lose!”

My DH said ‘dad your DIL is English, you forget?’ and we all giggled and he was so apologetic and I took no offence at all as we all get on so well.

Having said that, I do feel like the underlying tone is some do want England to lose simply because it’s England.

Still missing the point.

I don't necessarily blame English folk for not 'getting' how the Scots, Irish and Welsh feel, afterall they don't have to experience it, but they should at least accept that our experiences are real and valid.

I'd say 'most' would be at least the 2/3rd ish mark.

redfacebigdisgrace · 14/07/2024 00:27

this quite interesting on the perception of “most” l’m off to bed now but I’ll read the rest tomorrow. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/11/091119121302.htm

Catnipcupcakes · 14/07/2024 00:30

Its like any ‘Derby’ situation, you need a cartoon nemesis next door.

Do Liverpool supporters really not cheer on Everton?

Do Man United not fully big up Man City?

No.

My Dad was English so, technically, I'm half-English. I don't hate the English. Still want Spain to win, though 😆

But this happens during games that England are not even involved in. Why should i have to turn off a Germany v Switzerland game because the commentators keep talking about ENGLAND, FFS! Your post simply exemplies your arrogance!

Interesting, but factually incorrect. "A majority of Scots" means just that, it doesn't mean "almost every Scot".

Well the Scotland team have always been absolutely rubbish so it’s probably a jealousy thing for some.
I’m Scottish but not into football. However, if England win I’d be pleased.

Jealousy?

Oh come on

FakeAlaska · 14/07/2024 01:12

My sibling is the same. Our parents are Scottish, we were raised in the South of England. When she visited (rarely) she was jaw-open-gobsmacked that we had a Waitrose. She genuinely believes Scotland is in the late 80s. She wouldn't begrudge Scotland winning, however my Scottish relatives do not want England to do well - when I've asked why the response: "er... 300 years of oppression?!".
